Tackling the Problem of Sulfur Poisoning of Perovskite Catalysts for Natural Gas Combustion

Rosso, Ilaria,Saracco, Guido,Specchia, Vite 한국화학공학회 2003 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.20 No.2

LaMn_0.5Mg_0.5O_3 y MgO and LaCr_0.5-xMn_xMg_0.5O_3 y MgO catalysts(x=0-0.25, y=0-17) were prepared, characterized (XRD, BET, SEM-EDS, TEM, FTIR, chemical and atomic absorption analyses), tested for high-temperature methane combustion and aged in presence of SO_2 to investigate sulfur effect on catalytic activity. Different roles of manganese and chromium in the perovskite structure have been assessed:(i) manganese improves the activity of catalysts in the fresh state, whereas chromium worsens it;(ii) owing to its basic nature, manganese makes perovskites more prone to adsorb SO_2 and so less resistant to sulfur poisoning, whereas chromium, owing to its acidic nature, has opposite effects; (iii) the partial solubility of chromium oxide in basic media renders Cr-catalyst regeneration by NH_3 leaching less effective. MgO promotes catalytic activity of fresh LaCr_0.5Mg_0.5O_3 y MgO catalysts and slows down sulfur poisoning of LaMn_0.5Mg_0.5O_3 y MgO and LaCr_0.5Mn_0.5O_3 17 y MgO catalysts only.

      • NiAl Behavior at Plasma Spray Deposition

        Orban Radu L.,Lucaci Mariana,Rosso Mario,Grande Marco Actis 한국분말야금학회 2006 한국분말야금학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2006 No.1

Behavior of stoichiometric and near-stoichiometric NiAl at plasma spray deposition, without and with a bond coat, for coating layers realization on a low alloyed steel substrate, has been investigated. In all variants, NiAl particle melting and subsequent welding at the impact with substrate were observed, forming a relatively compact and adherent coating layer with the NiAl stability maintaining - all assuring the coating layer oxidation and corrosion resistance. Good results from these points of view, also validated through corrosion tests, were obtained for 45:55 Ni:Al composition without a bond coat but adopting an Ar protective surrounding of plasma jet.

      • LUXURY BRANDS AND SOCIAL MEDIA: IMPLICATIONS AROUND NEW TRENDS IN SELLING LUXURY PRODUCTS. A STUDY ACROSS DIFFERENT PRODUCT CATEGORIES

        Fbrizio Mosca,Cecilia Casalegno,Caterina Rosso 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2017 Global Fashion Management Conference Vol.2017 No.07

Despite its innovative and avant-garde reputation, the luxury industry initially began showing a very low commitment to new online marketing tools and it held a conservative approach to selling when compared to other sectors. Nowadays, the context has dramatically changed and luxury brands are approaching with an increasing interest social networks as well as the online selling. This research aims to clarify the current strategic approaches of the players in the different luxury markets towards the social commerce phenomenon, from both a theoretical and an empirical point of view. The purpose is to test a framework that can be used to classify luxury companies’ strategies regarding social media adoptions based on actual theories on social media. Four strategies related to the social media adoption by luxury brands have been identified: the Social brand ambassadors strategy class (low promotional content percentage and low social commerce score) includes those brands that use social media for entertainment and user engagement; the Social showcases strategy (high promotional content percentage and low social commerce score) includes those brands that use their social accounts as online catalogues; the Social infotainers strategy (low promotional content percentage and high social commerce score) includes those brands that scored high in social commerce, mainly because of the provision of informative content and brand–consumer interactions, but they were linked to more entertainment-oriented actions rather than product-related ones. Finally, the Social sellers strategy (high promotional content percentage and high social commerce score) includes those brands that have integrated social commerce into their online strategies and have subsequently exploited the potential of social media to drive online and offline sales. The database is built using original data from a content analysis of 100 luxury brands’ postings on five different social media platforms – namely Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Pinterest. The total final sample included 12,132 Facebook posts, 21,216 tweets on Twitter, 1,105 YouTube videos, 10,138 Instagram pictures/videos, and 117,359 Pinterest pictures. The main findings are the following: luxury brands adopt at this stage the Social brand ambassadors and Social showcases approaches; brands belonging to the perfumery, cosmetics, jewelry and watches markets show a more developed attitude towards the social commerce; in other luxury markets, such as wine and spirits, brands still adopt a Social Brand Ambassador strategy, while managers should increase the promotional content in order develop the social commerce. The Fashion & Accessories brands show a positive relationship between the percentage of promotional content and social commerce score. This means that social commerce adoptions depend on the single brand’s strategic choices, ranging from low adoption to best practices. In general, social commerce is still not widespread; many luxury fashion brands, while presenting new collections during fashion weeks, focused on fashion shows, backstage events, and celebrities, rather than really promoting the new product lines with materials, availability, and purchasing indications. This social media approach is mainly focused on increasing brand awareness rather than increasing social commerce. If managers aim at increasing social commerce they should add direct call to action and link the contents to e-commerce market place. Automotive brands are concentrated in the Social showcases area; This sector encounters natural limitations in the introduction of social commerce due to the difficulty of selling products through the digital channel; many brands have, however, devised strategies to approach their users during the purchasing process prior to the actual transaction to take advantage of the increasing ROPO phenomenon. Conversely, the Perfumes & Cosmetics sector shows a highly fragmented approach to social commerce. The content analysis based on single post contents has shown that actually the contents are based on pictures of the products, or the brand, information on events, and a large and increasing presence of video posts based storytelling about the history of the product and the brand heritage; the most social commerce oriented posts are picture or video focused on the product. The commercial contents that aim at developing the see now, buy now approach are mainly based on video shows.

Dielectric and structural features of the environmentally friendly leadfree PVDF/Ba0.3Na0.7Ti0.3Nb0.7O3 0-3 composite

        Ivair A. Santos,Jaciele M. Rosso,Luiz F. Cotica,Taiana G.M. Bonadio,Valdirlei F. Freitas,Ruyan Guo,Amar S. Bhalla 한국물리학회 2016 Current Applied Physics Vol.16 No.11

In this contribution, a promising environmentally friendly lead-free ferroelectric/polymer 0-3 composite, using polyvinylidene fluoride and barium sodium titanate niobate compounds, was synthesized and structurally and dielectrically characterized. The results suggest the complete formation of a 0-3 connected composite with enhanced dielectric properties, reaching a relative permittivity of 32 and a dissipation loss of 4%, at 1 kHz and 300 K, respectively. These dielectric features are associated with the intimate contact between the polymer and ceramic fraction in the composite that lead to the increase of the polar b-phase amount in the polymer fraction, at room temperature.

Prophylaxis for invasive fungal infection in pediatric patients with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

        Paola Perez,Jaime Patiño,Alexis A. Franco,Fernando Rosso,Estefania Beltran,Eliana Manzi,Andrés Castro,Mayra Estacio,Diego Medina Valencia 대한혈액학회 2022 Blood Research Vol.57 No.1

Background Antifungal prophylaxis is recommended for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) to decrease the incidence of invasive fungal infections (IFI). This study aimed to compare the two groups of antifungal prophylaxis in pediatric patients undergoing allogeneic HSCT. Methods This observational, analytic, retrospective cohort study compared the incidence of IFI with antifungal prophylaxis with voriconazole vs. other antifungals in the first 100 days after allogeneic HSCT in patients aged <18 years between 2012 and 2018. The statistical analysis included univariate and multivariate analyses and determination of the cumulative incidence of invasive fungal infection by the Kaplan‒Meier method using STATA 14 statistical software. Results A total of 139 allogeneic HSCT were performed. The principal diagnosis was acute leukemia (63%). The 75% had haploidentical donors, and 50% used an antifungal in the month before transplantation. Voriconazole (69%) was the most frequently administered antifungal prophylaxis. The cumulative incidence of IFI was 5% (7 cases). Of the patients with IFIs, four began prophylaxis with voriconazole, one with caspofungin, and one with fluconazole. Additionally, six were possible cases, one was proven (Candida parapsilosis), and 1/7 died. Conclusion There were no differences in the incidence of IFI between patients who received prophylaxis with voriconazole and other antifungal agents.

      • Electrically conductive bacterial nanowires produced by Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1 and other microorganisms

        Gorby, Y. A.,Yanina, S.,McLean, J. S.,Rosso, K. M.,Moyles, D.,Dohnalkova, A.,Beveridge, T. J.,Chang, I. S.,Kim, B. H.,Kim, K. S.,Culley, D. E.,Reed, S. B.,Romine, M. F.,Saffarini, D. A.,Hill, E. A.,Sh Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 2006 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF Vol.103 No.30

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 produced electrically conductive pilus-like appendages called bacterial nanowires in direct response to electron-acceptor limitation. Mutants deficient in genes for c-type decaheme cytochromes MtrC and OmcA, and those that lacked a functional Type II secretion pathway displayed nanowires that were poorly conductive. These mutants were also deficient in their ability to reduce hydrous ferric oxide and in their ability to generate current in a microbial fuel cell. Nanowires produced by the oxygenic phototrophic cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC6803 and the thermophilic, fermentative bacterium Pelotomaculum thermopropionicum reveal that electrically conductive appendages are not exclusive to dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria and may, in fact, represent a common bacterial strategy for efficient electron transfer and energy distribution.

Polyvinylidene fluoride/hydroxyapatite/b-tricalcium phosphate multifunctional biocomposite: Potentialities for bone tissue engineering

        Taiana G.M. Bonadio,Valdirlei F. Freitas,T^ania T. Tominaga,Ricardo Y. Miyahara,Jaciele M. Rosso,Luiz F. C otica,Mauro L. Baesso,Wilson R. Weinandb,,Ivair A. Santos,Ruyan Guo,Amar S. Bhalla 한국물리학회 2017 Current Applied Physics Vol.17 No.5

Bioactive ferroelectric composites based on polyvinylidene fluoride, hydroxyapatite and b-tricalcium phosphate have been synthesized and their structural, microstructural, bioactive, and ferroelectric properties are characterized. Structural and FTIR investigations showed the presence of the polar polyvinylidene fluoride (b2) phase, while ferroelectric characterizations revealed remnant polarizations and coercive field, around 0.04 mC/cm2 and 28 kV/cm, respectively, for these biocompatible samples. Structural and microstructural analysis of samples previously immersed in simulated body fluid for 7 days revealed a large apatite phase growth (1.45 mm) on the composites' surfaces as a strong indication of their elevated bioactivity and potentialities for bone tissue engineering.

In Vitro Biological Properties of Solanum sessiliflorum (Dunal), an Amazonian Fruit

Greice Franciele Feyh dos Santos Montagner,Fernanda Barbisan,Pauline Christ Ledur,Aline Bolignon,Jessica de Rosso Motta,Euler Esteves Ribeiro,Raquel de Souza Praia,Veronica Farina Azzolin,Francine Car 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.9

Solanum sessiliflorum is an Amazonian fruit (cubiu) that has been domesticated since pre-Colombian era. It is also used in folk medicine to treat some clinical conditions. This investigation chemically characterized and analyzed the in vitro antioxidant and antitumoral effect of a cubiu pulp/seed hydroalcoholic extract. Cubiu extract was chemically characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD), its antioxidant capacity measured by 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and the following complementary in vitro protocols were performed: (1) cytoprotective effect of cubiu on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) exposed to H2O2, a genotoxic and procarcinogen molecule; (2) effect of cubiu on low density lipoproteins oxidation; and (3) cytotoxic and antiproliferative effect on breast (MCF-7) and colorectal (HT-29) cancer cell lines. Biochemical and flow cytometry analyses were conducted in these protocols. Cubiu extract presented high concentrations of caffeic and gallic acids, beta-carotene, catechin, quercetin, and rutin, and its antioxidant capacity was confirmed. Cubiu attenuated H2O2 cytotoxicity on PBMCs, presented lowering effect on LDL oxidation, and induced mortality and proliferative inhibition of colorectal cancer cells. In cancer cells, cubiu extract at 10 μg/mL showed similar effects to 5-fluorouracil chemo drug reducing its viability and frequency of S-phase, indicating that cells are undergoing mitosis. In summary, despite the limitations of in vitro protocols, our results suggest that cubiu has several biological properties that affect human health.

Impact of fouling on the decline of aeration efficiency under different operational conditions at WRRFs

        Garrido-Baserba, Manel,Asvapathanagul, Pitiporn,Park, Hee-Deung,Kim, Taek-Seung,Baquero-Rodriguez, G. Andres,Olson, Betty H.,Rosso, Diego Elsevier 2018 Science of the Total Environment Vol.639 No.-

Abstract

Biofilm formation influences the most energy-demanding process in the waste water treatment cycle. Biofilm growth on the surface of wastewater aeration diffusers in water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) can increase the energy requirements up to 50% in less than 2 years. The impact of biofilms in aeration diffusers was quantified and assessed for first time using molecular tools (i.e., Energy-dispersive X-ray, Ra and RMS and Pyrosequencing) and state-of-the-art techniques (i.e., EPS quantification, Hydrophobicity and DNA quantification). To provide a better understanding and quantitative connections between biological activity and aeration energy efficiency, two replicates of the most common diffusers were installed and tested in two different operational conditions (higher and lower organic loading rate processes) during 15 months. Different scenarios and conditions provided for first time comprehensive understanding of the major factors contributing to diffuser fouling. The array of analysis suggested that higher loading conditions can promote specialized microbial populations to halve aeration efficiency parameters (i.e., αF) in comparison to lower loading conditions. Biofilms adapted to certain operational conditions can trigger changes in diffuser membrane properties (i.e., biological enhanced roughness and hydrophobicity) and enhance EPS growth rates. Improved understanding of the effects of scaling, biofouling, aging and microbial population shifts on the decrease in aeration efficiency is provided.

Highlights

Quantitative connections between the extent of biofouling and reduced aeration diffuser efficiency

The specific contributions to the decrease in aeration efficiency <αF> were quantified for first time.

Performance decrease is highly influenced by operational conditions and concurrent microbial population shifts.

Molecular tools were applied in order to understand the major factors contributing to diffuser fouling.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
