      • Phase Orientation of TiC-TiB2-SiC Ternary Eutectic Composite Prepared by an FZ Method

        TiC-TiB2-SiC system was a ternary eutectic, whose eutectic composition was 34TiC-22TiB2-44SiC (mol%). TiC-TiB2-SiC ternary eutectic composite were synthesized by a floating zone method using TiC, TiB2 and SiC powders as starting materials. The TiC-TiB2-SiC eutectic composite showed a lamellar texture. TiC(022), TiB2(010) and SiC(111) of the eutectic composite were perpendicular to the growth direction. TiC-TiB2-SiC ternary eutectic composite had specific relationship among the crystal planes: TiC[011]//TiB2[010]//SiC[112], TiC(200)//TiB2(001)//SiC( 402 ) and TiC( 111 )//TiB2(101 )//SiC( 220 ).

      • Influence of overhead transmission line on grounding impedance measurement of substation

        How to precisely measure the grounding impedance of large-scale substations is a fundamental guarantee for the safe operation of power systems. If the ground wires were connected to the grounding grid, these ground wires would shunt a part of the injected measuring current and allow the measured grounding impedance to be smaller than the actual impedance of the grounding system. Based on an actual 500-kV grounding system, this paper discusses how to analyze the influence of the overhead ground wire on the measured grounding impedance and how to obtain the real grounding impedance of the grounding system. A numerical analysis model considering the grounding system, the transmission lines, towers, and their grounding devices, based on the multilayer soil model analyzed from field test data of apparent soil resistivity, was constructed to analyze the influence of ground wires and tower grounding resistances on grounding impedance, and the general effects of different parameters, such as tower impedance, grounding impedance, and circuits of transmission lines, were analyzed. The real grounding impedance of the substation with connected overhead ground wires was validated, and some useful results have been obtained, based on the field-measured values and numerical analysis.

        Patchy echogenicity of the liver in patients with chronic hepatitis B does not indicate poorer elasticity

        Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate whether the presence of patchy echogenicity in the liver of patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is predictive of liver stiffness. Methods: A total of 200 CHB patients with and without patchy echogenicity of the liver were assigned to two groups, with 100 patients in each group, and 32 of them underwent liver biopsy. Additionally, 80 healthy subjects, 100 inactive hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers, and 100 patients with decompensated hepatic cirrhosis were assigned to the control groups. Laboratory tests and clinical data were collected, and shear wave velocity (SWV) of the liver was measured for all 480 subjects. Results: The median SWV in patients with a normal liver, inactive HBV carriers, CHB patients with and without patchy echogenicity, and decompensated hepatic cirrhosis were 1.07 m/ sec, 1.08 m/sec, 1.16 m/sec, 1.16 m/sec, and 2.02 m/sec, respectively; there was no significant difference in SWV values between CHB patients with patchy echogenicity and those without patchy echogenicity. Furthermore, among CHB patients with and without patchy echogenicity, no significant difference in SWV was found according to fibrosis stage. Conclusion: The presence of patchy echogenicity of the liver does not indicate a higher degree of liver stiffness.

        Impact of variations in fatty liver on sonographic detection of focal hepatic lesions originally identified by CT

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of variations in fatty liver on the ultrasonographic detection of focal liver lesions. Methods: A total of 229 patients with varying degrees of fatty liver and focal liver lesions and 200 patients with focal liver lesions but no fatty liver were randomly selected for inclusion in groups I and II, respectively. Findings of focal liver lesions identified on computed tomography were taken as the reference, and findings on ultrasonography were compared with them. Results: The number of focal liver lesions in groups I and II were 501 and 413, respectively. The ultrasonographic detection rates of focal liver lesions in groups I and II were 86.8% (435/501) and 94.2% (389/413), respectively. Comparison of the detection of the focal lesions between patients with and without fatty liver or different grades of fatty liver were as follows: mild fatty liver (162/177) vs. liver without fat infiltration (389/413) (P=0.277); mild fatty liver (162/177) vs. moderate fatty liver (190/212) (P=0.604); mild fatty liver (162/177) vs. severe fatty liver (83/112) (P<0.001); moderate fatty liver (190/212) vs. liver without fat infiltration (389/413) (P=0.051); moderate fatty liver (190/212) vs. severe fatty liver (83/112) (P<0.001); severe fatty liver (83/112) vs. liver without fat infiltration (389/413) (P<0.001); and fatty liver (435/501) vs. liver without fat infiltration (389/413) (P<0.001). Conclusion: Mild and moderate fatty liver are not significantly associated with the visualization of the lesion, while severe fatty liver usually impairs the detection of focal lesions in the liver. If a patient with severe fatty liver is suspected to have a liver tumor, ultrasonography should only be chosen cautiously in case of a missed diagnosis.

        Eutectic Ceramic Composites by Melt-Solidification

        While high-temperature ceramic composites consisting of carbides, borides, and nitrides, the so-called ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs), have been commonly produced through solid-state sintering, melt-solidification is an alternative method for their manufacture. As many UHTCs are binary or ternary eutectic systems, they can be melted and solidified at a relatively low temperature via a eutectic reaction. The microstructure of the eutectic composites is typically rod-like or lamellar, as determined by the volume fraction of the second phase. Directional solidification can help fabricate more sophisticated UHTCs with highly aligned textures. This review describes the fabrication of UHTCs through the eutectic reaction and explains their mechanical properties. The use of melt-solidification has been limited to small specimens; however, the recently developed laser technology can melt large-sized UHTCs, suggesting their potential for practical applications. An example of laser melt-solidification of a eutectic ceramic composite is demonstrated.

      • Numeral analysis model for shielding failure of transmission line under lightning stroke

        The shielding failure is the occurrence of a lightning stroke that bypasses the overhead ground wires and terminates on the phase conductors. The correct design to improve the shielding effect of transmission line to lightning is one of the key problems of transmission line design. A numerical analysis model for shielding failure of transmission line based on electromagnetic field theory is proposed in this paper. The electrical field of the system including lightning leader, transmission line and ground is solved, the range of lightning current striking the phase conductor is obtained, and the shielding failure probability of transmission line is calculated. The lightning leader model and the critical breakdown electrical field intensity of long gap are discussed. The analyzed results by numerical analysis model are compared with those by the electrogeometric model.

        Characterization of an inhibitor of apoptosis gene (BmSurvivin-2) from the silkworm, Bombyx mori

        The inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAP) plays an important role in maintaining the balance between cell proliferation and cell death. Here, we describe an IAP named BmSurvivin-2 isolated from tissues of Bombyx mori that contains only one baculoviral IAP repeat (BIR) domain and lacks a really interesting new gene (RING) finger domain. Cell viability and DNA fragment analysis showed that over-expression of BmSurvivin-2 could inhibit actinomycin D (ActD)-induced apoptosis in Sf9 cells, and its anti-apoptotic activity was dependent on its Nterminal BIR domain. Real-time PCR analyses indicated that BmSurvivin-2 mRNA was expressed in all tissues of silkworm and the highest expression level was found in testis and head. Expression of BmSurvivin-2 was found to gradually increase during the wandering stage of silkworm and decreased after wandering. Similar to deterin but not survivin, BmSurvivin-2 was primarily located in the cytoplasm. All these results provide insight into the role of a novel IAP in the silkworm, B. mori.

        Microwave-assisted functionalization of polyurethane surface for improving blood compatibility

        In order to improve the hemocompatibility of polyurethane (PU), we report a rapid and efficient two-step approach to graft poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) onto PU surface by a microwave-assisted method,involving diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) – functionalization and subsequent PEG coupling. Compared with conventional heating, the effects of solvent, time and MDI concentrations on the microwave-assisted MDI-functionalization, and the effect of time on the microwave-assisted PEG coupling were studied. PEGs with different molecular weights were successfully grafted onto PU surface under the optimum microwave-assisted conditions within only 20 min, and characterized by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and chemical titration. The hydrophilicity and in vitro blood compatibility of the surfaces were evaluated by water contact angle measurements, blood coagulation time (whole blood clotting time and prothrombin time) and platelet adhesion tests, respectively. All the PU-PEG surfaces had improved surface wettability and hemocompatibility. The results suggested that microwave-assisted functionalization may be a promising method for rapidly and effectively decorating polyurethane surfaces.

      • Lymph Node Ratio is More Predictive than Traditional Lymph Node Stratification in Lymph Node Positive Invasive Breast Cancer

        Objective: To evaluate the relationships between lymph node ratio (LNR, the ratio of positive lymph nodes in excised axillary lymph nodes) and disease-free survival (DFS) by comparing with traditional absolute positive lymph node number (pN classification) for prediction of breast cancer (BC) progrnosis. Methods and Patients: We retrospectively reviewed patients who received comprehensive therapy in Department of Breast Surgery, Hubei Cancer Hospital, China from Jan 2002 to Dec 2006 (Group A), and Department of Breast and Thyroid Surgery, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, China from Jun 2008 to May 2012 (Group B). Patients were allocated to low-risk (${\leq}0.20$), intermediate-risk (> 0.20 but ${\leq}0.65$), high-risk (>0.65) groups by LNR. The primary endpoint was 5-DFS. Results: A total of 294 patients were included in our study. LNR was verified as a negative prognostic factor for DFS (P=0.002 in Group A, P<0.0001 in Group B). Then we found the effects of pN and LNR delamination on disease-free survival (DFS) had statistical significance (P=0.012 for pN and P=0.031 for LNR stratification in Group A, both of them P<0.001 in Group B). Compared to pN staging, LNR staging displayed superior performance in prognosis, the adjusted hazard ratio of recurrence being 2.07 (95%CI, 1.07 to 4.0) for intermediate risk group (P=0.030) and 2.44 (95%CI, 1.21 to 4.92) for high risk group (P=0.013) in Group A. Conclusions: LNR stratification proved an adverse prognostic factor of DFS in lymph nodes positive invasive BC using cut-off values 0.20 and 0.65, and was more predictive than traditional pN classification for 5-DFS.
