Over the recent years, there has been a sudden surge in interest over character-related products among mobile game developers in South Korea as a business strategy to extend mobile game lifespans. However, even with the majority of mobile game players aging around 18~35 and higher, there has been a lack of study regarding design preferences and consumption tendencies of adult players—or kidults—when it comes to character-related products. In this study, three distinctive decision patterns among kidults were identified using an online Q-Sort method: (a) Character Oriented, (b) Item Oriented, and (c) Character-item Oriented. The similarities and differences of these three types are further analyzed to provide insight into important factors that play decisive roles in purchasing decisions made by kidults. The results from this study can aid mobile game developers in establishing reference points for future character business directions.
Cigarette Smoking in South Korea: A Narrative Review
Rebekah Gunter,Edwin Szeto,Se-Hoon Jeong,Sooyeon (Aly) Suh,Andrew J. Waters 대한가정의학회 2020 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.41 No.1
Although the prevalence of cigarette smoking has declined in Western countries over the past few decades, a comparable decline among males has not been observed in Asian countries, especially in South Korea, where approximately 40%–50% of men and 4%–8% of women have been identified as smokers, and there is a pressing need to understand the background of cigarette smoking in these populations. The present study is a narrative review of the research literature on cigarette smoking in South Korea. First, we describe the social, economic, and cultural factors that impact cigarette smoking in South Korea. The paper also reviews the available peer-reviewed literature comprising observational studies and interventional studies, including randomized controlled trials. The extant literature on smoking in Korean Americans is also reviewed. Cigarette smoking in South Korea has been relatively understudied, and this review identifies priority areas for future research, including the use of mobile interventions.

Segmental arterial mediolysis (SAM) is a rare noninflammatory, nonarteriosclerotic arteriopathy of an unknown etiology. It most commonly affects the medium-sized vessels of the abdomen and is characterized by the disruption of the arterial medial layer. Although histological confirmation remains the gold standard in diagnosis, the use of computed tomography angiography (CTA) has greatly aided the diagnosis and surveillance of SAM. Given its rarity and angiographic similarities to other vasculopathies, the diagnosis of SAM can be challenging and is often missed. We describe the case of a 46-year-old male patient who presented to our institution with abdominal pain and multiple foci of intra-abdominal arterial dissections on CTA. We report the acute management via endovascular intervention and review the literature with respect to the diagnosis and management of this rare condition. SAM remains an uncommon yet significant disease process requiring prompt and accurate diagnosis. Initiation of immediate treatment is crucial, given the knowledge gap about its natural progression.

Today, Ban Kōkei 伴蒿蹊 (1733–1806) is mostly known as the author of a collection of biographies, which became one of the best-selling books of Japan's late eighteenth century. However, he also devoted much of his career to developing the expressive potential of Japanese prose writing. This article locates Kōkei's promotion of language reform within the context of contemporaneous developments in translation from classical into vernacular Japanese and explains the role of translation in Kōkei's attempts to develop Japanese prose writing nearly one hundred years before the better-known national language advocacy of the “Unification of the Spoken and Written Languages” (Genbun itchi 言文一致) movement of the Meiji period (1868–1912). Considered alongside canonical figures like Motoori Norinaga and Ogyū Sorai, Kōkei's lesser-known work is evidence of a nascent “national” language consciousness among Japanese intellectuals prior to the Meiji period.

This article reports on a study investigating the experiences of family media practices during the pandemic. The article is based on questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 39 parents in South Korea and the United States who have children aged between 4 and 11. The article employs a framework developed by Livingstone and Blum-Ross to consider different “genres for ‘digital parenting’” (2020: 11). The article argues that although children’s screen time increased dramatically, parents continued to mediate it and make deliberate decisions about children’s media use. In particular, the analysis reveals parents’ decisions about different purposes for children’s media use, embracing many purposes they had previously resisted. These findings indicate that parents are making more nuanced decisions than previously employed when they followed indiscriminate screen time rules.
Structure-Mechanical Property Relationships of 3D-Printed Porous Polydimethylsiloxane
Jiayu Zhao,Rebekah Woo,Grace Chen,Jinhye Bae 한국고분자학회 2021 한국고분자학회 학술대회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.46 No.2
We studied the structure-mechanical property relationship to demonstrate the highly tunable mechanical properties of printed porous PDMS via direct ink writing. To enable 3D printing, we develop a porous PDMS ink consisting of a PDMS precursor, silicone oil, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and fumed silica nanoparticles by tuning the rheological behaviors. The rheological impact of each component was characterized by viscosity, storage modulus and loss modulus measurements. The porous structures in PDMS are subsequently generated by the removal of DBP in the cured PDMS matrix and characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical characterization exhibits that the printed sample using the porous PDMS precursor has enhanced stiffness, strength, toughness, and ductility compared to the nonporous PDMS sample. Notably, a broad range of mechanical properties is achieved by varying structural parameters (i.e. , infill densities and printing patterns) for 3D printing of a single porous PDMS material system, which provides insight for designing adaptive soft robots and actuators that can integrate different mechanical properties into a single device by simply changing the structural parameters.
Iberian Sources on the Imjin War: The Relação do fim e remate que teve a guerra da Corea (1599)
Marino, Giuseppe,Clements, Rebekah 성균관대학교 동아시아학술원 2023 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.23 No.1
Combining Iberian and East Asian primary source documents can provide a fresh perspective on sixteenth-century East Asian history. This is particularly true of the Imjin War (1592–98), the largest war in the world during the sixteenth century. Involving China, Korea, and Japan, it attracted close observation from Jesuit missionaries, who wrote a number of as yet largely unstudied accounts of the conflict and its implications for the Jesuit mission. We analyze one such manuscript, which is particularly detailed and unique in its scope: the Relação do fim e remate que teve a guerra da Corea, cross-referenced with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean accounts.
