      • Self-rated ability to follow instructions for four mental states described in yoga texts

        There were no studies available measuring the ability to follow instructions for meditation. Hence, the present study was planned to assess the ability to follow instructions for the four mental states viz., cancalata (random thinking), ekagrata (non-meditative concentration), dharana (focused meditation) and dhyana (defocused meditation or effortless meditation) described in yoga texts. Sixty male volunteers with ages ranging from 18 to 31 years (group mean age ± S.D., 22.78 ± 2.73) participated in the study. They were assessed using a visual analog scale immediately after each of the four states on four different days. The results showed that following dharana, scores on the visual analog scale were significantly lower compared to those related to cancalata, ekagrata and dhyana. Hence, dharana is the most difficult of the four states.

        Estimation and optimization of heat transfer and overall pressure drop for a shell and tube heat exchanger

        Most thermal/chemical industries are equipped with heat exchangers to enhance thermal efficiency. The performance of heat exchangers highly depends on design modifications in the tube side, such as the cross-sectional area, orientation, and baffle cut of the tube. However, these parameters do not exhibit a specific relation to determining the optimum design condition for shell and tube heat exchangers with a maximum heat transfer rate and reduced pressure drops. Accordingly, experimental and numerical simulations are performed for a heat exchanger with varying tube geometries. The heat exchanger considered in this investigation is a single-shell, multiple-pass device. A Generalized regression neural network (GRNN) is applied to generate a relation among the input and output process parameters for the experimental data sets. Then, an Artificial immune system (AIS) is used with GRNN to obtain optimized input parameters. Lastly, results are presented for the developed hybrid GRNN-AIS approach.

      • Non-enzymatic biosensing of glucose based on silver nanoparticles synthesized from Ocimum tenuiflorum leaf extract and silver nitrate

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>An enzyme-free glucose sensor developed based on silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) via bio-mediated route using <I>Ocimum tenuiflorum</I> leaves extract. The Ag NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Particle size analyzer (PSA), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDAX) spectroscopy, and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), to study structural, optical and morphological properties. The electrocatalytic activity of Ag NPs towards the oxidation of glucose in the 0.1 M NaOH electrolyte solution was analyzed. The Ag NPs was coated on Glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and reports indicating the outstanding capability such as high sensitivity (895.8 μAmM<SUP>−1</SUP>cm<SUP>−2</SUP>), linear range (1–8.9 mM), response time (<4s), low detection limit (0.0048 μM, S/N = 3), long-term stability, reproducibility, repeatability, and selectivity of the sensor.         The dynamics of glassy behavior in SrRu1-Fe O3 heterostructure

        We report the magnetic interactions in SrRu1-xFexO3 epitaxial thin films. All the films showed a single-phase and good step-terrace structure with minimal surface roughness. The X-ray photoelectron spectra of Fe and Ru revealed that both transition metal elements exist in the films as Fe3+ and Ru4+. With Fe doping, the itinerant ferromagnetic behavior and ferromagnetic transition temperature gradually decreased, but the coercivity field increased. The magnetic interplay between Fe3+-O-Fe3+ is coined as antiferromagnetic. There was another interaction between Ru4+-O-Fe3+ which is best described as ferromagnetic. Furthermore, the magnetic frustration in our films caused by the doped Fe resulted in dynamic glassy behavior. On the other hand, the epitaxial strain from the imminent SrTiO3 substrate along with change in oxygen vacancy might have strong evidence for the spin-glass nature in our thin films.

        Energy harvesting of PZT/PMMA composite flexible films

        Polymer/lead zirconate titanate {[Pb(Zrx, Ti1-x)O3], PZT, x=0.40} flexible composite films are prepared by solvent evaporation technique. Carbon tape used as a top and bottom electrodes for fabricating flexible PZT composite films. The phase purity and functional groups of PZT and polymer humps are confirmed by XRD and FTIR respectively. XPS analysis showed that PMMA contains carbon (C) and oxygen (O). Carbon (C), oxygen (O), lead (Pb), zirconium (Zr) and titanium (Ti) are present in PZT/PMMA composite films. The chemical states of Pb, Zr and Ti ions are 2+, 4+ and 4+ respectively confirmed by XPS. The higher forefinger bending motion of the film is found to reveal greater output voltage (5.2 V) than the output voltage (1.6 V) for slight bending motion of the forefinger. Therefore, based on the results human mechanical forces induce compressive stress on PZTs ferroelectric based composite films and are excellent candidate for energy harvester.

        FORMATION OF ZnO NANOBRUSHES IN DIRECT ATMOSPHERE USING A CARBON CATALYST AND A Zn METAL SOURCE

        In this paper we report on the preparation of nanobrushes of ZnO on quartz substrate by a direct atmosphere evaporation method using Zn metal flakes. Activated charcoal was used as a catalyst that facilitated the formation of nanobrushes in which the brush stem was about 15–20 μm in length and the bristles (100–200 nm thick) were made up of nanofibrous ZnO whose tips were 10–15 nm in width and were angled in some cases. These aligned nanobrushes can find potential applications as nanopower generators and high aspect ratio AFM probes by virtue of the piezoelectric property of ZnO. This technique is simple for realizing aligned ZnO nanobrushes with metallic Zn as the source material.
