Colony Age of Trichoderma azevedoi Alters the Profile of Volatile Organic Compounds and Ability to Suppress Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in Bean Plants

Lincon Rafael da Silva,Leonardo Luís de Barros Rodrigues,Amanda Silva Botelho,Bruna Sartório de Castro,Paulo Henrique Pereira Costa Muniz,Maria Carolina Blassioli Moraes,Sueli Corrêa Marques de Mello 한국식물병리학회 2023 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.39 No.1

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most important crops in human food production. The occurrence of diseases, such as white mold, caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum can limit the production of this legume. The use of Trichoderma has become an important strategy in the suppression of this disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by Trichoderma azevedoi CEN1241 in five different growth periods on the severity of white mold in common bean. The in vitro assays were carried out in double-plate and split-plate, and the in vivo assays, through the exposure of the mycelia of S. sclerotiorum to the VOCs of T. azevedoi CEN1241 and subsequent inoculation in bean plants. Chemical analysis by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detected 37 VOCs produced by T. azevedoi CEN1241, covering six major chemical classes. The profile of VOCs produced by T. azevedoi CEN1241 varied according to colony age and was shown to be related to the ability of the biocontrol agent to suppress S. sclerotiorum. T. azevedoi CEN1241 VOCs reduced the size of S. sclerotiorum lesions on bean fragments in vitro and reduced disease severity in a greenhouse. This study demonstrated in a more applied way that the mechanism of antibiosis through the production of volatile compounds exerted by Trichoderma can complement other mechanisms, such as parasitism and competition, thus contributing to a better efficiency in the control of white mold in bean plants.

Reaction of Cauliflower Genotypes to Black Rot of Crucifers

da Silva, Lincon Rafael,da Silva, Renan Cesar Dias,Cardoso, Atalita Francis,de Mello Pela, Glaucia,Carvalho, Daniel Diego Costa The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2015 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.31 No.2

This study aimed to evaluate six cauliflower genotypes regarding their resistance to black rot and their production performance. To do so, it was conducted two field experiments in Ipameri, $Goi\acute{a}s$, Brazil, in 2012 and 2013. It was used a randomized block design, with four replications (total of 24 plots). Each plot consisted of three planting lines 2.5 m long (six plants/line), spaced 1.0 m apart, for a total area of $7.5m^2$. Evaluations of black rot severity were performed at 45 days after transplanting, this is, 75 days after sowing (DAS), and yield evaluations at 90 to 105 DAS. The Verona 184 genotype was the most resistant to black rot, showing 1.87 and 2.25% of leaf area covered by black rot symptom (LACBRS) in 2012 and 2013. However, it was not among the most productive materials. The yield of the genotypes varied between 15.14 and 25.83 t/ha in both years, Lisvera F1 (21.78 and 24.60 t/ha) and Cindy (19.95 and 23.56 t/ha) being the most productive. However, Lisvera F1 showed 6.37 and 9.37% of LACBRS and Cindy showed 14.25 and 14.87% of LACBRS in 2012 and 2013, being both considered as tolerant to black rot.

Graphene as interface modifier in ITO and ITO-Cr electrodes

        Leticia A. Silva,Jéssica M.M. Luzardo,Sanair M. Oliveira,Rafael V. Curti,Alexander M. Silva,Rogerio Valaski,Rodrigo B. Capaz,Joyce R. Araujo 한국물리학회 2020 Current Applied Physics Vol.20 No.7

We explore graphene as interface modifier for electrodes in optoelectronic organic devices by measuring the electrical properties of ITO/graphene and ITO/Cr/graphene. For this purpose, exfoliated graphene (EG) was electrochemically synthesized and deposited by spray-pyrolysis. The built-in voltage (Vbi) values were 450 mV for the ITO/CuPc/Al reference, 750 mV for ITO/Cr/graphene/CuPc/Al and 1000 mV for ITO/graphene/CuPc/Al device structures. From these results, we estimate the work functions as 3.20 eV, 3.45 eV and 4.75 eV for ITO/ EG, ITO/Cr/EG and ITO. To understand how the work function changes, we carried out first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory (DFT) where Cr work function (~4.2 eV) is not modified by the deposition of pristine graphene; however there is a substantial increase (from 4.2 eV to 5.2 eV), upon deposition of graphene oxide (GO), resulting from a complete transfer of O atoms from the GO sheet to the Cr surface forming a thin layer of chromium oxide.

Identififi cation of enzyme inhibitors and antimicrobial activities from Capsicum annuum L. protein extracts against Colletotrichum scovillei

Lídia Da Silva Pereira,Thaynã Amanda Melo Souza,Rafael Walter,Cláudia Pombo Sudré,Layrana De Azevedo Dos Santos,Gabriel Bonan Taveira,Álan Chrisley Maracahipes,Virginia Silva Carvalho,Celso Shiniti Na 한국원예학회 2021 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.62 No.3

Diseases caused by phytopathogenic microorganisms are diffi cult to control and can aff ect plants at diff erent stages of theirdevelopment. Several resistance genes and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been identifi ed and related to the resistanceprocess of Capsicum . In recent years, studies have shown that peppers, especially the accession UENF1381, present resistanceagainst phytopathogenic microorganisms. This work aimed identify and characterize AMPs of the leaf and root from Capsicumannuum L. UENF1381 and to analyze the inhibitory activity of the AMPs on diff erent enzyme families and valuated theinhibitory activity on Colletotrichum scovillei. Initially, self-fertilized pepper seeds were cultured for 45 days in glass fl askscontaining ½-MS medium. Then, leaves were inoculated with inoculum of Xanthomonas euvesicatoria (10 8 CFU mL −1 )or water (control). Leaf and root samples were collected at 12, 24 and 48 h after inoculation to extraction. The activity ofextracts on diff erent enzyme families was analyzed by incubating the enzymes (trypsin, α-amylase and β-1,3-glucanase)with 30 μg mL −1 of the obtained extracts. The eff ect of extracts on fungi was also tested. It was identifi ed that protein of leafand root extracts from C. annuum L. UENF1381 presented a majority of bands with a low molecular mass (6–14 kDa). Weobserved that all leaf and root extracts signifi cantly inhibited trypsin and α-amylase activity and able to signifi cantly inhibitC. scovillei growth. With this work we hope to contribute to the use of peptides as potential molecules in microbial controland in the development of new Capsicum cultivars resistant to microorganisms.

Martello, Luciane Silva,Antonelo, Daniel Silva,Consolo, Nara Regina Brandao,Pacheco, Veronica Madeira,Negrao, Joao Alberto,Rosa, Alessandra Fernandes,Leme, Paulo Roberto,Sousa, Rafael Vieira,Silva, Sa Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2021 Animal Bioscience Vol.34 No.9

Objective: This work was carried out to evaluate the effects of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) and ractopamine hydrochloride (RH) combined with immunocastration on the welfare traits of feedlot Nellore cattle. Methods: Ninety-six Nellore males (average body weight [BW] = 409±50 kg; average 20 mo of age) were divided into two groups according to BW; half of the animals in each group received two doses of an immunocastration (ImC) vaccine in a 30 day interval, and the other half did not receive the vaccine (NoC). Afterward, the animals were housed and fed a common diet for 70 days. Then, they were split into three groups and fed one of the following diets for 30 additional days: control (CO) diet, with no β-AA; ZH diet, containing 80 mg/d ZH; and RH diet, containing 300 mg/d RH. Welfare traits were assessed by monitoring body surface temperature using infrared thermography (IRT) and plasma cortisol and temperament measurements. Results: There was no interaction between sexual condition and diet for any trait. The ImC and NoC groups did not differ in rectal and ocular temperatures. The ImC animals had higher flight speeds (p = 0.022) and tended to have higher cortisol levels (p = 0.059) than the NoC animals. Animals fed ZH and RH did not differ in cortisol levels, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, temperature measured by IRT, or temperament behaviour. Conclusion: The ImC animals showed a less stable temperament during handling practices than NoC, whereas ZH and RH supplementation had no adverse effects on animal welfare.

Production of uranium tetrafluoride from the effluent generated in the reconversion via ammonium uranyl carbonate

Jo~ao Batista Silva Neto,Elita Fontenele Urano de Carvalho,Rafael Henrique Lazzari Garcia,Adonis Marcelo Saliba-Silva,Humberto Gracher Riella,Michelangelo Durazzo 한국원자력학회 2017 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.49 No.8

Uranium tetrafluoride (UF4) is the most used nuclear material for producing metallic uranium by reduction with Ca or Mg. Metallic uranium is a raw material for the manufacture of uranium silicide, U3Si2, which is the most suitable uranium compound for use as nuclear fuel for research reactors. By contrast, ammonium uranyl carbonate is a traditional uranium compound used for manufacturing uranium dioxide UO2 fuel for nuclear power reactors or U3O8-Al dispersion fuel for nuclear research reactors. This work describes a procedure for recovering uranium and ammonium fluoride (NH4F) from a liquid residue generated during the production routine of ammonium uranyl carbonate, ending with UF4 as a final product. The residue, consisting of a solution containing high concentrations of ammonium (NH4+), fluoride (F-), and carbonate (CO3 2-), has significant concentrations of uranium as UO2 2+. From this residue, the proposed procedure consists of precipitating ammonium peroxide fluorouranate (APOFU) and NH4F, while recovering the major part of uranium. Further, the remaining solution is concentrated by heating, and ammonium bifluoride (NH4HF2) is precipitated. As a final step, NH4HF2 is added to UO2, inducing fluoridation and decomposition, resulting in UF4 with adequate properties for metallic uranium manufacture.

      • Impact of Treatment Type on Overall Survival in Elderly Brazilian Women with Breast Cancer

Bello, Marcelo Adeodato,de Menezes, Raquel Ferreira,de Sousa Silva, Brunna,da Silva, Rafael de Carvalho,Cavalcanti, Rousiane Silva,da Costa Moraes, Thayane de Fatima,Tonellotto, Fabiana,de Aguiar, Suz Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.10

Objective: To analyze the survival of elderly patients with breast cancer according to the type of treatment used. Methods: A cohort study of women aged 80 or over with breast cancer registered with the Brazilian National Cancer Institute (Instituto Nacional do $C{\hat{a}}ncer$ - INCA) between 2008 and 2009 was conducted. Prognosis was analyzed according to the cancer treatment performed: surgery, radiotherapy, or hormone therapy. Analysis of the overall 5-year survival rate was performed using the Kaplan - Meier method, and comparisons of curves were undertaken using the log-rank test. For multiple regression analysis, Cox regression was used, adjusting for age and clinical stage, considering values of p < 0.05 as significant. Data were all analyzed using the statistical package SPSS version 20. Results: 70 women with a mean age of $84.0{\pm}3.7years$ at diagnosis participated in the study. The median follow-up time was 37.1 months (range 0.5-75.5), and 31 deaths (44.3%) occurred during this time. The median survival time was 51.2 months (95% CI, 44.9-57.4), higher in those who underwent surgery (p = 0.012) and those who had hormone therapy (p=0.001). Treatment with surgery reduced the risk of death by 61.7% (HR 0.3; 95% CI, 0.1-0.6; p = 0.001) when adjusted for clinical stage and age at diagnosis. However, there was no significant benefit from radiotherapy (HR 1.2; 95% CI, 0.5-2.5; p = 0.694). Conclusion: Treatment with surgery and hormone therapy increased the survival of our Brazilian patients with breast cancer aged 80 or over.

Effect of official judo matches on handgrip strength and perceptual responses

        Rafael Lima Kons,Juliano Dal Pupo,Jonathan Ache-Dias,Thyago Garcia,Romário Rodrigues da Silva,Luiz Felipe Guarise Katicips,Daniele Detanico 한국운동재활학회 2018 JER Vol.14 No.1

This study aimed to verify the effect of judo matches on handgrip strength and perceptual responses during an official tournament in medalists and nonmedalists. Thirty-four male judo athletes participated in an offi-cial judo tournament. Before the first match and immediately after each match, maximum isometric handgrip strength and rate of perceived ex-ertion overall and in specific areas were assessed. Analysis of variance for repeated measures was used to compare variables before the first match and after each match, and t-test was used to compare medalists and nonmedalists with the level of significance set at 5%. Also, effect size (ES) analysis was used. The results showed decrease in handgrip strength in both hands from the third match (P<0.05). The rate of per-ceived exertion (RPE) increased from the first match and remained high over the subsequent matches (P<0.001). A very large effect for nonmed-alist group (ES=3.44) and large effect for medalist group (ES=1.94) was found in the third match compared to prematch. Forearm and fingers were the body regions most cited by athletes in both groups. We con-cluded that an official judo competition induced significant drop in hand-grip strength from the third match and increased the RPE from first match. Medalists seem to have better recovery after the third match compared to nonmedalists.

Effects of photobiomodulation on different application points and different phases of complex regional pain syndrome type I in the experimental model

( Jaquelini Betta Canever ),( Rafael Inácio Barbosa ),( Ketlyn Germann Hendler ),( Lais Mara Siqueira Das Neves ),( Heloyse Uliam Kuriki ),( Aderbal Silva Aguiar Júnior ),( Marisa De Cassia Registro F 대한통증학회 2021 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.34 No.3

Background: Complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS-I) consists of disorders caused by spontaneous pain or induced by some stimulus. The objective was to verify the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) using 830 nm wavelength light at the affected paw and involved spinal cord segments during the warm or acute phase. Methods: Fifty-six mice were randomized into seven groups. Group (G) 1 was the placebo group; G2 and G3 were treated with PBM on the paw in the warm and acute phase, respectively; G4 and G5 treated with PBM on involved spinal cord segments in the warm and acute phase, respectively; G6 and G7 treated with PBM on paw and involved spinal cord segments in the warm and acute phase, respectively. Edema degree, thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia, skin temperature, and functional quality of gait (Sciatic Static Index [SSI] and Sciatic Functional Index [SFI]) were evaluated. Results: Edema was lower in G3 and G7, and these were the only groups to return to baseline values at the end of treatment. For thermal hyperalgesia only G3 and G5 returned to baseline values. Regarding mechanical hyperalgesia, the groups did not show significant differences. Thermography showed increased temperature in all groups on the seventh day. In SSI and SFI assessment, G3 and G7 showed lower values when compared to G1, respectively. Conclusions: PBM irradiation in the acute phase and in the affected paw showed better results in reducing edema, thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia, and in improving gait quality, demonstrating efficacy in treatment of CRPS-I symptoms.
