An extensive in vitro study was conducted to delineate the influence of levels and source of sulfur besides rumen fungi habitat on the degradation of pearl millet stover dry matter and fibrous constituents. The results revealed that degradability of dry matter, organic matter, acid detergent fibre, neutral detergent fibre and cellulose from pearl millet stover was maximized (P<0.05), irrespective of habitat of anaerobic fungi, at 0.3% dietary sulfur level out of four graded levels (0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5%) besides control. Both organic (DL-Methionine) and inorganic (sodium sulfate) sources of sulfur were equally effective in promoting degradative activity of bovine fungi. Prolonged incubation of cattle or buffalo fungi from 12 to 96 hr accelerated (P<0.05) the fermentative activity of bovine fungi. Cattle excelled (P<0.05) buffalo for fungal degradative activity under both the supplemental form of sulfur.

For the precise measurements of special nuclear materials (SNM) including Pu and Am isotopes, we have used phoswich detector combination of two single crystal scintillators of Gd<sub>3</sub>Ga<sub>3</sub>Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>12</sub>:Ce and CsI:Tl. High detection efficiency and sensitivity along with high figure of merit for the discrimination of these phoswich detectors ensures the detection and discrimination of thermal neutrons and gammas from spontaneous fission of Pu and other isotopes in presence of high gamma background. Using this detector, the low energy gammas, which is stopped completely in 1mm thick disc of GGAG, can be also discriminated from high energies gamma and shows linearity in wide range of sample quantities. By changing only the appropriate shielding, the similar setup was used for thermal neutron detection and shows a very good linearity over wide range. The quantity of a test sample was also calculated accurately by using the measured calibrated plot.

Lignin and manganese peroxidase (LiP, MnP)and laccase production by Phanerocheate chrysosporium was optimized by response surface methodology for brewery waste and apple pomace. The effect of moisture,copper sulphate, and veratryl alcohol (VA) concentrations on enzyme production was studied. Moisture and VA had significant positive effect on MnP and LiP production and the viability of P. chrysosporium (p < 0.05) and copper sulphate produced a negative effect. However, moisture and copper sulphate had a significant positive (p < 0.05) effect on laccase production, but VA had an insignificant positive effect (p < 0.05). Higher values of MnP, LiP and viability of P. chrysosporium on apple pomace (1287.5 U MnP/gds (units/gram dry substrate), 305 U LiP/gds, and 10.38 Log 10 viability) and brewery waste (792 U MnP/gds and 9.83Log 10 viability) were obtained with 80% moisture, 3mmol/kg VA, and 0.5 mmol/kg copper. LiP production in brewery waste (7.87 U/gds) was maximal at 70% moisture,2 mmol/kg VA, and 1 mmol/kg copper. Higher production of laccase in apple pomace (789 U/gds) and brewery waste (841 U/gds) were obtained with 80% moisture, 3 mmol/kg VA, and 1.5 mmol/kg copper. Thus, moisture along with VA and copper sulphate was pertinent for the production of ligninolytic enzymes and increased cell viability.
