<i>o</i>-NitrobenzylAlcohol Derivatives: Opportunities in Polymer and Materials Science
Zhao, Hui,Sterner, Elizabeth S.,Coughlin, E. Bryan,Theato, Patrick American ChemicalSociety 2012 Macromolecules Vol.45 No.4
<P>Polymers featuring photolabile groups are the subjectof intense research because they allow the alteration of polymer propertiessimply by irradiation. In particular, the <I>o</I>-nitrobenzylgroup (<I>o</I>-NB) is utilized frequently in polymer andmaterials science. This Perspective pays particular attention to theincreasing utilization of this chemical group in polymer chemistry. It covers the use of (i) <I>o</I>-NB-based cross-linkersfor photodegradable hydrogels, (ii) <I>o</I>-NB side chainfunctionalization in (block) copolymers, (iii) <I>o</I>-NBside chain functionalization for thin film patterning, (iv) <I>o</I>-NB for self-assembled monolayers, (v) photocleavable blockcopolymers, and (vi) photocleavable bioconjugates. We conclude withan outlook on new research directions in this rapidly expanding area.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/mamobx/2012/mamobx.2012.45.issue-4/ma201924h/production/images/medium/ma-2011-01924h_0002.gif'></P>

<P>A simple self-catalyzed hydroamination method for creating hybrid TiO2-polyaniline core-shell nanoparticles (NP) has been shown. Hybrid NPs with a range of possible sizes are afforded in high yield under mild reaction conditions and simultaneously show improved charge transport and electrochromic behavior compared to either polyaniline alone or physically blended with TiO2.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>A facile technique is presented for using methacrylic acid-functionalized TiO2nanoparticles to synthesize core-shell TiO2-Polyaniline (PANI) structures that display solvent dispersibility and improved electrochromic performance over PANI. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c1cc13137k'> </P>
