The Effect of Inward and Outward Foreign Direct Investment o n Regional Innovation Performance: Evidence from China

Quanlin Li,Sunhae Lee,Sae Woon Park 사람과세계경영학회 2020 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.25 No.1

Purpose: This study examines how IFDI (Inward FDI) and OFDI (Outward FDI) of China affect the regional innovation performance using a panel data of Chinese provinces and municipalities. Design/methodology/approach: We use the system Generalized Method of Moments(GMM) estimation method to correct for the endogeneity of the dependent variable. A balanced panel data set of 30 provinces and municipalities in China over the period 2003- 2017 is employed in the analysis. We measure the regional innovation performance on two scales: the number of patent grants per 10,000 inhabitants and new product sales. Findings: The empirical results show that IFDI and OFDI have significantly positive impact on innovation performance and that the impact of IFDI is bigger than that of OFDI in new product sales. We also identify three positive variables- R&D intensity, absorptive capacity, and GDP growth, while the other variables cannot be concluded because of their different signs depending on the model. Research limitations/implications: This research is not without limitations. First, this study failed to take account of the overseas destination and the motives of OFDI due to the data limitations. Considering these factors may produce different results. Second, this study considered only high-tech industry in calculating the industrial specialization and diversification index because of the data limitations. Expanding the scope of the industry would result in different values of the indices, and thus our empirical results would be changed accordingly. Originality/value: Firstly, we provide evidence for the potential positive impact of OFDI and IFDI on regional innovation performance for the extended period until 2017. China’s OFDI rose significantly during the second decade of the 21st century. So it was necessary to conduct a research on the extended period. Secondly, we do not include OFDI and IFDI as independent variables in the same equation, but use them separately in different equations because the inclusion of them in the same equation raises the concern of potential multicollinearity as China’s OFDI and IFDI have a very high correlation, which is also what is different from preceding studies.

Influence of the roof lithological characteristics on rock burst: a case study in Tangshan colliery, China

        Jienan, Pan,Zhaoping, Meng,Quanlin, Hou,Yiwen, Ju,Guofu, Li Techno-Press 2009 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.1 No.2

Many factors influence occurrences of rock burst in coal mines, such as mining methods, control methods of the coal roof, lithological characteristics of the roof and floor, tectonic stress, groundwater and so on. Among those factors, lithological characteristics in the roof are the intrinsic controlling factors that affect rock burst during coal mining. Tangshan colliery is one of the coal mines that have suffered seriously from rock bursts in China. In this paper, based on the investigating the lithological characteristics of coal roofs and occurrence of rock bursts in Tangshan colliery, a numerical method is used to study the influence of roof lithological characteristics on rock burst potential. The results show that the lithological characteristics in the roof have an important impact on the distributions of stresses and elastic strain energy in coal seams and their surrounding rocks. Occurrences of rock bursts in this colliery have a close correlation with the thick-bedded, medium- to fine-grained sandstones in the roof. Such strata can easily cause severe stress concentration and accumulate enough energy to trigger rock bursts in the working face during mining operations.

Cracks evolution and multifractal of acoustic emission energy during coal loading

        Kong, Xiangguo,Wang, Enyuan,He, Xueqiu,Liu, Xiaofei,Li, Dexing,Liu, Quanlin Techno-Press 2018 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.14 No.2

Coal samples with different joints morphology were subjected to uniaxial compression experiments, cracks evolution was recorded by Nikon D5300 and acoustic emission (AE) energy signals were collected by AEwin Test for Express-8.0. During loading process, coal samples deformed elastically with no obvious cracks changes, then they expanded gradually along the trace of the original cracks, accompanied by the formation of secondary cracks, and eventually produced a large-scale fracture. It was more interesting that the failure mode of samples were all shear shape, whatever the original cracks morphology was. With cracks and damage evolution, AE energy radiated regularly. At the early loading stage, micro damage and small scale fracture events only induced a few AE events with less energy, while large scale fracture leaded to a number of AE events with more energy at the later stage. Based on the multifractal theory, the multifractal spectrum could explain AE energy signals frequency responses and the causes of AE events with load. Multifractal spectrum width (${\Delta}{\alpha}$), could reflect the differences between the large and small AE energy signals. And another parameter (${\Delta}f$) could reflect the relationship between the frequency of the least and greatest signals in the AE energy time series. This research is helpful for us to understand cracks evolution and AE energy signals causes.

Contrast of sludge toxicity variation during treatment of wastewater containing mixed chlorophenols and single chlorophenol

        Xiurong Chen,Yuan Wang,Qiuyue Li,Yingying Yang,Xiao Wei,Shanshan Wang,Quanlin Lu,Xiaoli Sun 대한환경공학회 2021 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.26 No.5

To address problems associated with the potential toxicity of sludge when it is applied in land utilization, this study investigated the variations by which activated sludge becomes toxic when fed with wastewater containing mixed chlorophenols, and compared variations in sludge toxicity due to inputs of mixed chlorophenols and single chlorophenol groups. In this study, 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) and mixed chlorophenols which consist of both 4-CP and 2,4,6-TCP were studied in sequencing batch reactors (SBR). The results indicate that in 0-30 d, the toxicity of sludge fed with mixed chlorophenols is higher than that of sludge fed with single chlorophenol groups. During 50-100 d, the toxicity of sludge fed with mixed chlorophenols ranged between two single chlorophenol groups. EPS and protein in EPS had a significant relationship with sludge toxicity, but there was no significant relationship between polysaccharide in EPS and sludge toxicity.

Imbalance of Innate and Adaptive Immunity in Esophageal Achalasia

        Lu Yao,Zuqiang Liu,Weifeng Chen,Jiaqi Xu,Xiaoyue Xu,Jiaxin Xu,Liyun Ma,Xiaoqing Li,Quanlin Li,Pinghong Zhou 대한소화기 기능성질환∙운동학회 2023 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.29 No.4

Background/AimsPrevious studies reveal that immune-mediated neuroinflammation plays a key role in the etiology of esophageal achalasia. However, the understanding of leucocyte phenotype and proportion is limited. This study aim to evaluate the phenotypes of leukocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells transcriptomes in esophageal achalasia. MethodsWe performed high-dimensional flow cytometry to identified subsets of peripheral leukocytes, and further validated in lower esophageal sphincter histologically. RNA sequencing was applied to investigate the transcriptional changes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with achalasia. Cell-type Identification by Estimating Relative Subsets of RNA Transcripts (CIBERSORT) was used for estimating the immune cell types. A differential gene expression analysis was performed and the differential expressed genes were subjected to gene ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes network, protein-protein interaction network construction. ResultsAn imbalance between innate and adaptive immune cells occurred in achalasia. Specifically, neutrophils and CD8+ T cells increased both in peripheral blood and lower esophageal sphincter in achalasia. Eosinophils decreased in peripheral blood but massively infiltrated in lower esophageal sphincter. CIBERSORT analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells RNA sequencing displayed an increased prevalence of CD8+ T cells. 170 dysregulated genes were identified in achalasia, which were enriched in immune cells migration, immune response, etc. Proton pump inhibitor analysis revealed the intersections and gained 7 hub genes in achalasia, which were IL-6, Toll-like receptor 2, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor, complement C3, and complement C1q A chain. ConclusionPatients with achalasia exhibited an imbalance of systematic innate and adaptive immunity, which may play an important role in the development of achalasia.
