        Molecular characterization and expression of ZAP-70 in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in response to Streptococcus agalactiae stimulus

        The 70 kDa zeta-chain associated protein kinase (ZAP-70) plays a critical role in effective signal transductions that are fundamental to T cell differentiation, proliferation and effector functions. In this paper, the ZAP- 70 gene of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (designated as On-ZAP-70) was cloned and its expression pattern under the stimulation of Streptococcus agalactiae was investigated. Sequence analysis showed important structural characteristics required for TCRs signal transduction were detected in the deduced amino acid sequence of On-ZAP- 70, and the deduced genomic structure of On-ZAP-70 was similar to the known ZAP-70. In healthy tilapia, the On- ZAP-70 transcripts were mainly detected in the thymus, spleen, head kidney and gill. Moreover, there was a clear time-dependent expression pattern of On-ZAP-70 after immunization and the expression reached the highest level at 48 h in the spleen and head kidney, and at 72 h in the thymus, respectively. This is the first report on the expression of ZAP-70 induced by intracellular bacteria vaccination in teleosts. These findings indicated that On- ZAP-70 may play an important role in the immune response to intracellular bacteria in Nile tilapia.

      • Application of Smartphone and Cloud Server Technology with Near Infrared Spectroscopy on Sugar Content Measurement

        Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been widely used in agricultural product inspection because it is non-destructive, fast, and easy to operate. In this research, portable near infrared light detection instrument was used to develop a smartphone interface that could analyze the sugar content of agricultural products via the cloud system. Using the android operating system smartphone as an intermediary software to control the spectrometer configuration, spectra data are transferred and calculated in the cloud system. The user interface would then display the predicted result. So far, an intermediary software has been developed that could transfer spectra data to the cloud server, and a pre-trained guavas calibration equation was used to predict the sugar content of guava. The entire process of scanning, calculating and transferring data takes approximately 10 seconds. In the future, the functionality of the user interface could be improved by allowing manipulation of data configuration during scanning, creating a more diversified user interface with faster analysis time.

        Spatial-temporal interrelationships of safety risks with dynamic partition analysis: a mechanical installation case

        Inspection is the most critical phase of controlling and mitigating safety risks. However, current safety inspection practices areheavily experience-driven without considering generic interrelationships of safety risks. In this study, we performed a partitionanalysis based on risk interrelationships using inspection data with the goal of discovering distribution patterns of safety risks. Ourresults exhibit consistent chronological connections between risk attributes, including spatial and temporal characteristics. Themechanics of safety risk interrelationships were further investigated. In terms of the spatial aspects, ongoing unsafe conditions wereobserved in multiple locations. Spatial resource limitations and the interfaces at various locations were found to be key contributorsto risk interrelationships. In terms of temporal aspects, a high similarity of work at different times and ongoing unsafe conditionswere considered as key contributors. Practical Application: By understanding the spatial–temporal interrelationships of the riskcharacteristics, managers can develop improved strategies for devising inspection routes, which will thereby improve inspectionefficacy.

        We was girls together: The Double Female Bildungsroman in Toni Morrison`s Love

        In this paper, I read Love as a double female Bildungsroman and argue that, as in Morrison`s second novel Sula, Love is primarily a story about interrupted love between girls. This reading focuses on the narratives of (anti-)Bildung of the two female characters, Christine Cosey and Heed the Night Johnson Cosey, in relation to the emotional conflicts that are associated with love. As readers, we are invited to work with the author to ferry out the why and how of this interruption and to witness the power of love when the two characters are reunited.

        Preparation and characteristics of a flexible neutron and g-ray shielding and radiation-resistant material reinforced by benzophenone

        With a highly functional methyl vinyl silicone rubber (VMQ) matrix and filler materials of B4C, PbO, andbenzophenone (BP) and through powder surface modification, silicone rubber mixing, and vulcanizedmolding, a flexible radiation shielding and resistant composite was prepared in the study. The dispersionproperty of the powder in the matrix filler was improved by powder surface modification. BP was addedinto the matrix to enhance the radiation resistance performance of the composites. After irradiation, thetensile strength, elongation, and tear strength of the composites decreased, while the Shore hardness ofthe composites and the crosslinking density of the VMQ matrix increased. Moreover, the compositeswith BP showed better mechanical properties and smaller crosslinking density than those without BPafter irradiation. The initial degradation temperatures of the composites containing BP before and afterirradiation were 323.6 C and 335.3 C, respectively. The transmission of neutrons for a 2-mm thicksample was only 0.12 for an AmeBe neutron source. The transmission of g-rays with energies of 0.662,1.173, and 1.332 MeV for 2-cm thick samples were 0.7, 0.782, and 0.795, respectively

        Transnational Negotiations: Transracial Adoption and Narratives of Return in Lisa Ko’s The Leavers

        The first Chinese arrived in New York in 1847 and founded Manhattan’s Chinatown. New York later saw a significant influx of Chinese in the late 1870s when anti-Chinese violence was mounting in the American West; thus began the extended history of the Chinese American community in the Big Apple. While there are differences and similarities among the different generations of Chinese immigrants, new immigrant writing is marked by a special interest in metropolitan New York. This Atlantic turn away from the predominantly transpacific narrative of Chinese America may have been influenced by the fact that in the 1970s New York City replaced San Francisco as the largest gathering place of Chinese Americans in North America. This ethnogeographical shift is faithfully reflected in the immigrant writing of the new millennium, such as Lisa Ko’s The Leavers (2017). In The Leavers, Ko reveals her strong racial and social consciousness by writing about the precarious lives of undocumented Chinese workers and the affective cost of transracial adoption in her debut novel. Peilan, the immigrant mother from Fuzhou, goes into debt to be smuggled into New York only to find herself entrapped in another sweatshop. Her American-born son Deming is adopted by a white family when she is imprisoned in a camp for undocumented immigrants. This paper analyzes the struggles of transnational negotiations in The Leavers, emphasizing particularly on the son’s perspective regarding issues of transracial adoption and narratives of return, to explore the complex and changing ethnic historiography of Chinese America.

        Fusion Model for Hazard Association Network Development: A Case in Elevator Installation and Maintenance

        This paper proposes a fusion model for developing a data-driven risk association network, based on historical inspection records. The fusion model first re-categorizes the hazards based on the similarity in their occurrence patterns. Second, spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the hazard occurrence is examined, after which site-specific records as outliers are removed from the database. Third, a structured learning approach is used to investigate the causal relations between safety risks and the weight of each relation is calculated based on the association rules. Finally, the causal relations and weightings are fused to form the hazard association network, based on which critical hazards can be identified for safety management strategy planning. Safety management for an elevator installation and maintenance is used as a domain to validate the proposed fusion model, which develops the hazard association network using a dataset with 110,698 safety inspection records on 25,729 sites (with elevator installation or maintenance) managed by an elevator company. Using the developed network, critical hazards on the sites are identified for proactive constructionmanagement.

        Acoustic noise measurement in counter-rotating propellers

        The acoustic noise and flow condition of tandem propellers in a horizontal axis-type tidal stream power unit, which is composed of counter-rotating propellers and double-rotational armature-type generator without traditional stators, were experimentally investigated. The front and rear propellers rotate in opposite directions and drive the inner and outer armatures, respectively; the rotational torque of the front propeller coincides with the torque of the rear propeller. The front blade profile exerts a great effect on noise generation from the tandem propellers, but the effect of the rear blade profile is comparatively small. The sound pressure level is largely concentrated at low frequencies, and most predominant frequencies can be predicted by Hanson’s method. These predominant frequencies are mainly caused by the tip vortex shedding from the front and rear blades in the counter-rotating propellers. The vortex shedding from the front blade does not affect the rear blade. As a result, the acoustic noise is weakened as long as the diameter of the rear propeller is smaller than the diameter of the front propeller.
