        Position-specific and Team-ranking-related Morphological Characteristics in German Amateur Soccer Players -a Descriptive Study -Anthropometry in Amateur Soccer Players-

        The purpose of this study was to describe the morphological characteristics in German amateur soccer players based upon their ranking in the championship table and the position of the players. Seventy-two male Fifth Division soccer players from four clubs volunteered for this study. The examination of the teams was conducted within 10 days of the preparation period for the second half of the season when teams A through D were ranked 6th, 5th, 2nd and 11th in the Division. Anthropometric measurements included body weight and height, skinfold thickness (biceps, triceps, subscapular, suprailiac, calf), biepicondylar humerus and femur breadths, upper arm (flexed and tensed), thigh and calf girths. Somatotypes were calculated using the Heath-Carter equations.No differences were found between the means of the different anthropometric variables of the four teams (p <.05). In all groups, the somatotype means of the soccer players were mesomorph-endomorph. Compared to field players, goalkeepers showed higher values for body height, body weight and arm girth (p <.05).This study showed that there were no anthropometric and somatotype differences between the soccer teams of different club ranking. Compared to field players, goalkeepers showed higher body height and weight, higher biepicondylar femur and humerus breadths, hig8her arm, thigh and calf girths, and higher mesomorphy. Discriminant function analyses were unable to separate the players` position on the basis of body composition or somatotype. No differences were found between the means of the different anthropometric variables of the four teams (p < .05).

        Identifying with the L2 Self : Study Abroad Experiences of Japanese English Language Learners

        A possible self is a combination of the self knowledge, thoughts and beliefs that we have regarding our future potential (Markus & Nurius, 1986). This study investigated the possible selves of eight Japanese niversity study abroad (SA) students. Dörnyei (2005) posited the L2 motivational self-system, comprised of the L2 ideal self as a construct for better understanding and predicting L2 motivation. Several studies and theoretical accounts indicate that discrepancies between current and ideal states can help predict motivation, as the possible self acts as a future self-guide (Dörnyei & Chan, 2013; Higgins, 1987; Ushioda & Dörnyei, 2012). The study identified several key contextual elements that contributed to changes in the participants’ L2 motivational self systems. These included ‘thrown in the deep end’ type interactions, good timing of interactions, conscious moves by the conversation partner to assist the participants, relaxed and positive atmosphere, opportunities to initiate and sustain interactions and one on one interactions that were in line with the participants’ own cultural identity. The findings suggest the contextual elements shaped the participants’ L2 ideal and feared self images and contributed to the identification of discrepancies between current and desired states which influenced study behaviours, goals and motivation over time.

        Growth Characteristics of a Pyruvate Decarboxylase Mutant Strain of Zymomonas mobilis

        에탄올 생산 세균 Zymomonas mobilis에서 에탄올 생산 경로의 핵심으로 작용하는 효소인, pyruvate decarboxylase (pdc) 유전자의 불활성 실험을 통해, PDC 활성이 50% 감소된 PDC 활성 변형균주가 분리되었다. 이러한 균주들의 에탄올 탄소대사 흐름이 고부가가치 화합물인 피루브산, 숙신산 및 젖산 등으로 전환되는지를 발효실험을 통해 평가하였다. 하지만 pdc의 발현을 중지시키기 위해 cat-삽입형-pdc와 pdc-결손형 아형 유전자를 전기 천공법을 이용해 야생형 균주 ZM4의 염색체에 이식하기 위한 다수의 시도에도 불구하고, 이러한 방법을 통해 분리된 균주들은 대부분 부분적 유전자 불활성 특성을 보였으며, PDC 활성이 완전히 손실된 삭제 돌연변이 균주를 획득할 수는 없었다. PDC활성이 변형된 돌연변이 균주의 발효 실험에서, 야생형 균주와 비교 시 감소된 PDC효소 활성의 변화로 인해 기질 흡수율과 에탄올 생산율이 감소되어 피루브산 생산이 약 2.5 g l-1 정도로 증가함을 확인하였으나, 젖산과 숙신산의 생산에 현저한 농도 변화를 보이지 못했다. 이러한 결과는 Z. mobilis의 산화환원 에너지가 PDC 효소 활성에 의한 에탄올 생산 경로에 전적으로 의존하여 발생한다는 것을 암시하였다. 상기 결과를 토대로 pdc 유전자의 완전한 불활성 유도와 산화환원 에너지의 균형은, 젖산 생산을 위한 lactate dehydrogenase, 숙신산 생산을 위한 pyruvate dehydrogenase와 malic enzyme과 같은 효소의 활성 증가를 통해, 세포내 NAD와 NADH 농도의 산화환원 균형이 이루어져야 발생할 수 있음을 시사하였다. Studies of the inactivation of a gene encoding pyruvate decarboxylase, pdc, in an ethanol-producing bacterium, Zymomonas mobilis, identified a mutant strain with 50% reduced PDC activity. To evaluate the possibility of a carbon-flux shift from an ethanol pathway toward higher value fermentation products, including pyruvate, succinate, and lactate, fermentation studies were carried out. Despite attempts to silence pdc expression in the wild-type strain ZM4 using cat-inserted pdc and pdc-deleted homologs by electroporation, the strain isolated showed partial gene activation. Fermentation experiments with the PDC mutant strain showed that the reduced expression level of PDC activity resulted in decreased rates of substrate uptake and ethanol production, together with increased pyruvate accumulation of 2.5 g l-1, although lactate and succinate concentrations were not significantly enhanced in these modified strains. Despite numerous attempts, no strains were isolated in which complete pdc inactivation occurred. This result indicates that the ethanol fermentation pathway of this bacterium is totally dependent on the activity of the PDC enzyme. To ensure a redox balance of intracellular NAD and NADH levels, other enzymes, such as lactate dehydrogenase for lactate, and enzymes involved in the production of succinic acid, such as pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) and malic enzymes, may be needed for their increased end-product production.

        Open Access : Performance and carcass characteristics of Australian purebred and crossbred lambs supplemented with Rice Bran

        Background: This study examined the effects of dietary supplementation with rice bran, sire breed and gender on live animal performance and carcass characteristics in Australian crossbred and purebred Merino lambs. Methods: Forty-eight lambs balanced by sire breed (Dorset, White Suffolk, Merino) and gender (ewe, wether) were randomly allocated into three dietary supplementation groups (Control- 24 lambs fed wheat/barley-based pellets, Low- 12 animals fed a 50/50 ratio of wheat-based/rice bran pellets, and High- 12 lambs fed rice bran pellets). The Rice bran pellets replaced 19 % of the barley component of the feed. Animals were group-fed at the rate of 1000 g of the supplement per head per day with ad libitum access to lucerne hay as the basal diet and water. The duration of the feeding trial was 49 days with an initial 21-day adjustment period. Results: Sire breed differences were evident for initial (p < 0.0002) and final (p < 0.0016) liveweights, hot carcass (p < 0.0030) and cold carcass (p < 0.0031) weights, as well as dressing percentage (p < 0.0078), fat thickness (p < 0.0467), yield grade (p < 0.0470) and rib eye area (p < 0.0022) with purebred Merino under-performing compared to the crossbreds. Concentrate feed conversion efficiency, costs per unit of liveweight gain and over the hooks income were comparable between treatments regardless of the observed trend where the high supplementation group tended to show lower feed intake (745.8 g/day) compared to both the control (939.9 g/day) and low supplementation groups (909.6 g/day). No significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed between treatments for live animal performance, carcass characteristics, gender and their second-order interactions. Conclusions: Results indicate that Rice bran can be utilised as a cost-effective supplementary feed source in genetically divergent sheep over a 49-day feeding period without detrimental effects on overall live animal performance or carcass characteristics.

        Expression of lac and gal operons in Zymomonas mobilis

        Two Zymomonas mobilis strains (ZM63 and ZM6307), containing both lactose and galactose operons, were constructed. β-Galactosidase and galactokinase assays indicated that both operons were expressed in both strains. The transport systems available for lactose uptake by Zymomonas mobilis were investigated using ^14C-labelled lactose. After the outer membrane, which was considered to be a possible barrier to lactose uptake, was disrupted by treatment with EDTA and Ca^2+ ions, some increase in lactose uptake was observed in ZM6306 (lac^+) and ZM6307 (lac^+ gal^+), but not in the parent, ZM6. This suggested that the outer membrane of Zymomonas mobilis acts as a barrier to lactose uptake to some degree, and also that the lactose permease is operational in Zymomonas mobilis.
