Development and Validation of an Integrated Healthy Workplace Management Model in Taiwan

        Chen Fu-Li,Chen Peter Y.,Chen Chi-Chen,Tung Tao-Hsin 한국산업안전보건공단 산업안전보건연구원 2022 Safety and health at work Vol.13 No.4

Background: Impacts of exposure are generally monitored and recorded after injuries or illness occur. Yet, absence of conventional after-the-effect impacts (i.e., lagging indicators), tend to focus on physical health and injuries, and fail to inform if workers are not exposed to safety and health hazards. In contrast to lagging indicators, leading indicators are proactive, preventive, and predictive indexes that offer insights how effective safety and health. The present study is to validate an extended Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) that consists of six leading indicators. Methods: Questionnaires were distributed to 13 organizations (response rate ¼ 93.1%, 1,439 responses) in Taiwan. Cronbach a, multiple linear regression and canonical correlation were used to test the reliability of the extended Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) which consists of six leading indicators (safe climate, transformational leadership, organizational justice, organizational support, hazard prevention and control, and training). Criteria-related validation strategy was applied to examine relationships of six leading indicators with six criteria (perceived health, burnout, depression, job satisfaction, job performance, and life satisfaction). Results: The results showed that the Cronbach’s a of six leading indicators ranged from 0.87 to 0.92. The canonical correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between the six leading indicators and criteria (1st canonical function: correlation ¼ 0.647, square correlation ¼ 0.419, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The present study validates the extended VPP framework that focuses on promoting safety and physical and mental health. Results further provides applications of the extended VPP framework to promote workers’ safety and health.

Electrochemical Behavior and Protective Property of Al-containing Zinc-Rich Paints

        Chen, Wen-Ben,Chen, Peter,Chen, Hunz-Yin,Wu, Chung-Min,Tsai, Wen-Ta 한국부식방식학회 2002 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.31 No.3

The effect of Al addition on the corrosion performance of zinc-rich paints (ZRP) was investigated. Both electrochemical measurement and salt spray test were employed to evaluate the corrosion performance of ZRP with or without Al addition. The Al content as percentage of the total metallic components in the ZRP, investigated in this study, varied from 0 to 75wt%. The experimental results showed that protective nature of ZRP altered from cathodic protection to barrier former as the Al content was increased beyond 20wt%. The results from salt spray tests also revealed that the corrosion products were modified with the presence of aluminum oxide in the Al-containing ZRP. The amount of zinc white on the painted steel decreased as the Al content in the ZRP increased. The protectiveness, in terms of the time of red rust formation and cathodic protection, was reduced as the Al content was higher than 20wt%.

Reliability Models for Application Software in Maintenance Phase

Chen, Yung-Chung,Tsai, Shih-Ying,Chen, Peter Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2008 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.7 No.1

With growing demand for zero defects, predicting reliability of software systems is gaining importance. Software reliability models are used to estimate the reliability or the number of latent defects in a software product. Most reliability models to estimate the reliability of software in the literature are based on the development lifecycle stages. However, in the maintenance phase, the software needs to be corrected for errors and to be enhanced for the requests from users. These decrease the reliability of software. Software Reliability Growth Models (SRGMs) have been applied successfully to model software reliability in development phase. The software reliability in maintenance phase exhibits many types of systematic or irregular behaviors. These may include cyclic behavior as well as long-term evolutionary trends. The cyclic behavior may involve multiple periodicities and may be asymmetric in nature. In this paper, SGRM has been adapted to develop a reliability prediction model for the software in maintenance phase. The model is established using maintenance data from a commercial shop floor control system. The model is accepted to be used for resource planning and assuring the quality of the maintenance work to the user.

High open-circuit voltage solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells with organic dye.

        Chen, Peter,Yum, Jun Ho,De Angelis, Filippo,Mosconi, Edoardo,Fantacci, Simona,Moon, Soo-Jin,Baker, Robin Humphry,Ko, Jaejung,Nazeeruddin, Md K,Grä,tzel, Michael American Chemical Society 2009 NANO LETTERS Vol.9 No.6

Solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells were fabricated using an organic dye, 2-cyanoacrylic acid-4-(bis-dimethylfluoreneaniline)dithiophene (JK2), which exhibits more than 1 V open-circuit potential (V(oc)). To scrutinize the origin of high voltage in these cells, transient V(oc) decay measurements and density functional theroy calculations of the interacting dye/semiconductor surface were performed. A negative conduction band shift was observed due to the favorable dipolar field exerted by the JK2 sensitizer to the TiO(2) surface, at variance with heteroleptic Ru(II)-dyes for which an opposite dipole effect was found, providing an increased V(oc).

Speed Optimization in Automated Microinjection of Zebrafish Embryos

        Peter C.Y. Chen,Shengfeng Zhou,Zhe Lu,Joo-Hoo Nam,Hong Luo,RuowenGe,Chong-Jin Ong,Wei Lin 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2015 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.13 No.5

In this paper we formulate an optimization problem in the design of a speed trajectory for the motion of the micropipette during automated microinjection of zebrafish embryos. The objective of this optimization problem is to minimize the deformation sustained by the zebrafish embryo. We subsequently propose a solution to this optimization problem by first constructing a viscoelastic model of the zebrafish embryo, and then synthesizing an optimal speed trajectory based on a class of polynomials. Furthermore, we present results of numerical simulation and experiments that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The statistically meaningful experimental data (generated using a large sample of zebrafish embryos) provide direct evidence on the advantage of such speed optimization in microinjection.

The Effects of Caponization Age on Muscle Characteristics in Male Chicken

        Chen, Kuo-Lung,Chen, Tsai-Tzu,Lin, Kou-Joong,Chiou, Peter Wen-Shyg Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.11

This study examined the caponization effects on the muscle characteristics (quality and quantity) of caponized male chickens fed before or after sexual maturity. Healthy and uniform Single Comb White Leghorn chickens were caponized at 3-week-old. Feeding was conducted until 16-week-old in trial 1 or from 12-week-old to 26-week-old in trial 2. Ten sham operated male chickens (Sham) were also assigned to each trial as the control group. Chickens used in both trials were housed in individual cages with each chicken representing one replicate. The results showed that early caponization (3-week-old) significantly increased (p<0.05) body weight and pectoral major muscle weight and percentage at 16-week-old compared to the Sham in trial 1. Caponization significantly increased (p<0.05) the protein content of the pectoral major muscle, but decreased (p<0.05) the ash content. Late caponization (12-week-old) significantly decreased (p<0.05) the ash content, myofibrillar ATPase activity and emulsification capacity of the pectoral major muscle in mature capons (26-week-old) compared to the Sham in trial 2. Early caponization (3-week-old) only increased the weight and protein content of the pectoral major muscle with decreased ash content in 16-week-old capons. Late caponization (12-week-old) showed no affects on pectoral major muscle quantity, while it decreased the ATPase activity and enhanced the emulsification capacity in mature (26-week-old) capons. Hence, the muscle quality improvement was shown as capons were fed to sexual maturity.
