The excessive initial corrosion rate of Mg is a critical limitation in the clinical application of biodegradable Mg implantsbecause the device loses its fi xation strength before the fractured bone heals. This study suggests a new approach to overcomethis hurdle by accelerating tissue regeneration instead of delaying the implant biodegradation. As angiogenesis is anessential process in early bone regeneration, a Mg implant coated with electrospun nanofi bers containing nitric oxide (NO),which physiologically promotes angiogenesis, is designed. The integrated device enables adjustable amounts of NO to bestored on the NO donor-conjugated nanofi ber coating, stably delivered, and released to the fractured bone tissue near theimplanted sites. An in vitro corrosion test reveals no adverse eff ect of the released NO on the corrosion behavior of the Mgimplant. Simultaneously, the optimal concentration level of NO released from the implant signifi cantly enhances tube networkformation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells without any cytotoxicity problem. This indicates that angiogenesis canbe accelerated by combining NO-releasing nanofi bers with a Mg implant. With its proven feasibility, the proposed approachcould be a novel solution for the initial stability problem of biodegradable Mg implants, leading to successful bone fi xation.

Background: Hemangioma is the most common benign hepatic tumor. Many hepatic hemangiomas tend to be found incidentally, but should be differentiated from malignant tumors. We report an interesting case of hepatic hemangioma in patient who has high risks of hepatocellular carcinoma. Case: A 52-year-old woman, who was a chronic alcoholic abuser and hepatitis C virus carrier with no treatment experience, was admitted due to diarrhea. The patient had suffered from intermittent abdominal pain in the right subcostal area for recent 3 months. Also the patient had easy bruising and frequent epistaxis. She had used oral contraceptives for almost 20 years. Systolic blood pressure was 160 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure was 80 mmHg. Body temperature was normal. Physical examination revealed icteric sclerae and tenderness in right upper quadrant of the abdomen. Laboratory study showed platelet count of 31,000/ul, AST/ALT of 302/127 IU/L, and total bilirubin of 2.7 mg/dl. 3-phased contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a 4 cm × 4 cm sized hepatic mass involving both segment 5 and 6. Abdominal CT finding suggested hepatic hemangioma, however, typical finding of hemagioma was unclear, therefore, could not rule out the malignancy. Since she had risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma, abdominal ultrasonography was performed for further evaluation. But abdominal ultrasonography also showed atypical finding. The confirmative diagnosis could be done by dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using primovist®, which is an innovative liver cell-specific contrast medium. Dynamic MRI presented peripheral globular enhancement and a centripetal fill-in pattern, confirmatory findings of hepatic hemangioma, on the delayed image. The patient got relief from abdominal pain and diarrhea during admission, now is being followed-up at a general out-patient clinics. Conclusions: Hemangiomas with atypical abdominal CT and ultrasonographic findings in patients with high risks of hepatocellular carcinoma can be easily characterized with primovist-enhanced dynamic MRI.

공동주택 주차장의 축적먼지 중 미량원소성분 분석과 오염원 평가

공동주택 주차장의 먼지오염실태를 연구하기 위하여 2010년 3월말에서 6월초까지 대구지역 공동주택 36곳의 지상주차장(36지점)과 지하주차장(36지점)을 대상으로 채취한 총 72개의 시료를 100 μm 이하로 체거름하고 산추출한 후 ICP로 14개원소를 분석하였다. 농축계수를 이용한 미량원소성분의 발생원 평가결과는 지상주차장과 지하주차장 모두 Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, V의 성분은 자연적인 발생원에 의한 영향을 받고 있는 반면에 Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn의 성분은 인위적인 발생원에 의한 영향을 받고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 Ca은 지상주차장의 경우에는 자연적인 발생원의 영향을 받았고, 지하주차장의 경우에는 인위적인 발생원의 영향을 받은 것으로 나타났다. 미량원소성분의 농도분석 결과는 자연적인 발생원과 관련된 성분이 인위적인 발생원과 관련된 성분보다 매우 높은 농도를 보였다. 인위적인 발생원성분의 기여도는 지하주차장이 지상주차장보다 높았으며, 미량원소성분의 평균농도 또한 지하주차장이 지상주차장보다 높았다. 오염지수를 이용한 중금속성분의 오염도를 평가한결과는 지하주차장이 지상주차장보다 5.5배정도 높게 오염된 것으로 나타났다. 미량원소성분간의 상관성 분석결과는 지상주차장이 지하주차장에 비해 유의한 상관성을 나타내는 항목이 많았으며, 특히 자연적 발생원 성분간 유의한 상관성이 더욱 크게 나타났다. 또한 유해 중금속성분과 지하주차장의 영향인자간의 상관성을 분석한 결과는 주차대수(공간)가 적은 지점이 큰 지점보다, 환기장치를 가동하지 않은 지점이 가동한 지점보다, 그리고 최근 도색년도와 청소일이 오래된 지점이 상대적으로 유해중금속을 많이 함유하고 있었다. In order to investigate the degree of apartment parking lot dust contamination, total 72 samples of parking lot dust (36 from ground parking lots and 36 from the underground parking lots) were collected in Daegu city from the end of March to the early June 2010. The dust samples were sieved below 100 μm, and analysed by ICP for 14 elements after an acid extraction. Results obtained from the source assessment of trace element using enrichment factor showed that Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na and V were influenced by natural sources, while Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were influenced by anthropogenic sources in both the ground parking lot and the underground parking lot. And results showed that Ca were influenced by natural sources in the ground parking lot, but influenced by anthropogenic sources in the underground parking lot. The measured values were remarkably higher in components from natural sources than in components from anthropogenic sources. Underground parking lot dust was more affected by anthropogenic sources and contaminated compared with the ground parking lot dust. Pollution index of heavy metals revealed that underground parking lot dust was 5.5 times more contaminated with heavy metal components than the ground parking lot dust. The results of correlation analysis among trace elements indicated that components in the ground parking lot were more correlated than those in the underground parking lot, and especially more correlated with natural sources-natural sources. Analysis for correlations between components and influencing factors in the underground parking lot showed that concentrations of heavy metals were higher with smaller number of parking spaces and no ventilation system, and older apartments in last paint and cleaning had relatively higher contents of heavy metals than those of recently painted and cleaned.

Alcohol Fermentation Characteristics of the Korean Native Mulberry (Morus spp.)

This study was carried out to investigate the fermentation characteristics and optimum conditions for alcohol fermentation of the Korean native mulberry. The yeast strains of S. kluyveri DJ97, La parisienne (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Netherlands) and Enoferm (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Denmark) produced higher alcohol concentrations than other strains, and further study was therefore performed with these three species. The optimum additional water content for maximizing alcohol concentration was 250% (v/w). The alcohol concentrations were rapidly increased in the first 4 days under the optimum conditions and reached 13.8% for S. kluyveri DJ97, 14.0% for La parisienne and 14.0% for Enoferm, respectively. Residual sugar concentration was decreased steadily from the beginning of fermentation until 5 days, after which it maintained a constant level. The pH was decreased steadily in the log phase during further maturation. However, the pH underwent a slight decrease after 4 days and then was stabilized during further maturation. Methanol concentrations for the three species used were analyzed after 60 days maturation and were lower than the levels regulated by the food standard. Fusel oils such as n-propanol, iso-butanol, and iso-amyl-alcohol were produced as by-products with the highest production from Enoferm and the lowest from S. kluyveri DJ97.
Preparation and Absorption Properties of ZnO Nanostructures for Cleanup of $H_2S$ Contained Gas

A nano-size zinc oxide sorbents was formulated for the effective removal of sulfur compounds ($H_2S$) at a very low concentration (under 50 ppmv) in a gasified fuel gas. They were prepared by a matrix-assisted method in this study. An active carbon was used as a matrix and zinc acetate $(Zn(C_2H_3O_2)_2\;2H_2O)$ was selected as a precursor. About 10-40 wt% of zinc was doped over the activated carbon in the preparation of the sorbents. Content of the zinc doped over the activated carbon had an influence on the morphology of zinc oxide nanostructure. The reactivity tests of the ZnO nanostructures having various morphologies were performed in a fixed bed reactor. Their reactivity increased as their sizes became smaller and their surface areas made larger. Most prepared nanosize zinc oxides showed an excellent performance for the removal of $H_2S$ at a very low concentration.
