Avian coccidiosis is one of the most important diseases affecting the intensive poultry industry worldwide. Despite its outstanding importance and well-known relation with other factors that may influence the health status of the birds and its commercial performance, few studies are available on the distribution of Eimeria species in the field. In Europe the studies available until the present date are, Czech Republic(Kučera, 1990), France(Williams, 1996), UK(Chapman, 1982, Shirley 1995, Shirley 1997, Williams 2006, Eckert 1995), Norway(Haug, 2008)and Sweden(Thebo, 1998). Most of the published studies have been focused on identifying the seven species of Eimeria which affect Gallus gallus in a European country. However, the only survey that has been done exclusively with samples from broiler farms of Norway is Haug, 2008. In the present study, litter samples obtained in broiler farms from Spain, Belgium, Italy and France were evaluated for the presence of Eimeria species. The evaluation was done using a polymerase chain reaction(PCR) developed at IAH to specifically detect E.acervulina, E.maxima, E.mitis, E.praecox and E.tenella. Together with this molecular tool, oocyst counts and a morphometric evaluation test were also used to analyse the samples. Results obtained provide interesting data on the prevalence of species which affect the broiler birds in Europe as well as the percentage of farms with presence of each species. Together with prevalence data, rotation programs(anticoccidials-vaccines) appear to be of paramount importance to upgrade the flock performances. Data obtained in farms from the Netherlands confirms the advantage of using rotation programs with vaccines composed of Eimeria strains sensitive to anticoccidials.
Robust Adaptive Controller for the Diesel Engine Air Path with Input Saturation

In this paper, we design an adaptive controller for the diesel engine air path with a priori consideration of actuator saturation effects to regulate the exhaust manifold pressure and the compressor flow rate. The originality of the proposed approach is the integration of an auxiliary system to compensate the saturation effects. Simulation results of the diesel engine air path are given to show the efficiency of the proposed approach.
Acute Effects of Turmeric Extracts on Knee Joint Pain: A Pilot, Randomized Controlled Trial

Turmeric extracts (TEs) have been shown to be suitable as a pain treatment for human joint arthritis. In a pilot, randomized clinical trial, 68 individuals with mild/moderate knee joint pain (KJP) consumed a new formulation of water-soluble TEs and insoluble curcuminoids (B-Turmactive®) or brewer's yeast as a placebo for 1 week. Our hypothesis was that B-Turmactive would have a short-term analgesic effect on KJP measured by the self-reported Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). After 3 days and 1 week, both treatments reduced pain when walking on a flat surface (P < .01), going up or down stairs (P < .001), and sitting or lying (P < .05), but only B-Turmactive reduced pain at night while in bed and in an upright standing position (P < .01). Concerning global KJP, it was reduced by both treatments after 3 days and 1 week of the intervention (P < .001), being less with B-Turmactive after 1 week (P = .012 vs. 3 weeks). Although no intertreatment differences were observed, only B-Turmactive decreased high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (P = .045) at 1 week, which indicates a prompt analgesic effect mediated by a decrease in inflammatory status.

정기적으로 운행하던 여객선 세월호가 소각도 변침 중에 급격히 횡경사되면서 전복하는 사고가 최근 발생하였다. 선박의 횡경사가 발생 원인에 따라 Heel, List, Loll로 구분되어 그 원인에 따라 적절히 대응해야 함에도 불구하고 음의 복원력에 의한 횡경사(Loll)에 대한 항해사들의 인식이 매우 부족하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 음의 복원력에 의한 횡경사에 대한 개념, 발생과정 및 횡경사각 산정법을 고찰하고, 박스형 모형선을 이용한 수조 실험을 통해 실제 횡경사각의 발생과 음의 복원력 정도에 따른 횡경사각의 크기를 이론식과 비교 검증하였다. 그 결과, 실험값은 이론식에 의한 횡경사각 계산값과 잘 일치하였으며, 음의 복원력에 의한 횡경사의 특성으로서 좌현과 우현에서 동일한 각도의 횡경사가 발생하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 음의 복원력을 가진 선박의 거동에 관한 인식이 확대되고 과거 원인이 불명확한 전복사고의 원인분석에 참조되길 기대한다. 향후 음의 복원력에 의한 횡경사에서의 부적절한 대응으로 전개될 수 있는 선박의 거동에 관한 실험연구 및 사례연구가 필요하다고 사료된다. Recently, the passenger ship 'Sewol' capsized with an abrupt inclination while she was making a small angle alteration. It is very important to fully understand the concepts, causes and relevant corrections for a ship's transverse inclination, which is classified into heel, list and loll. In this study, the concept, development and calculation of loll were well considered and the actual magnitude of the angle of loll was simulated in a box-shaped model-ship experiment. The experimental values and its development according to different values of negative stability were compared with calculated values. In the results, experimental values for the angle of loll coincided closely with calculated values and the model inclined symmetrically on both port and starboard sides indicating an outstanding feature of loll. This study is expected to expand the concept of loll and help in the analysis of capsize incidents with unknown causes. Further experimental research or case studies concerning the risk of inappropriate correction for loll arising from misunderstandings will be needed.
