Polyurea membrane for water cleaning: Kinetic and equilibrium modeling of dyes adsorption

del Campo Calvo Pablo,de Oliveira Lilian Karla,de Oliveira Nicole Aparecida Amorim,Molina Eduardo Ferreira 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.40 No.12

The present treatment of water from aqueous solutions, reported from our research work, uses polyurea (PU) as a novel adsorbent. Specifically, the adsorption efficacy of PU was tested in dyes with different characteristics (Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB)). The PU membrane was obtained by a sol-gel chemistry reaction of polyetheramine with polyisocyanate resulting in the formation of urea groups, confirmed through FTIR analysis. The polymeric membrane exhibited a high homogeneity, making it a viable purifying technology for wastewater. The high swelling capacity of the membrane played a crucial role in the CR dye diffusion/adsorption. Notably, PU membranes showed excellent adsorption to CR anionic dye, resulting in a removal efficiency over 85%. However, MB dye adsorption was less favorable, suggesting a high affinity with anionic species. Our analysis revealed that the adsorption of CR dye onto PU membranes follows the pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Moreover, the intra-particle diffusion model demonstrated that the swelling of PU facilitates the adsorption/diffusion process, thereby accelerating the mass transfer of the CR dye onto the membrane. Overall, our findings suggest that PU membranes derived from commercially available reagents are highly promising for the decontamination of dye wastewater.

Antithrombotic Study and Identification of Metabolites in Leaf Extracts of Chaya [Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (Mill.) I.M. Johnst.]

        Juan Pablo Quintal-Martínez,Irma Guadalupe Quintal-Ortiz,Ligia Gabriela Alonzo-Salomón,David Muñoz-Rodríguez,Maira Rubi Segura-Campos 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.12

In Mexico, Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (chaya) has been used to treat cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Because CVD are the number one cause of mortality, chaya use has become a health strategy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antithrombotic activity and identify the metabolites in the most active extract. Aqueous (Aq), ethanolic (EtOH), acetonic (An), ethyl acetate (AcOEt), diethyl ether (Et2O), and hexanic (Hx) extracts were obtained. Platelet aggregation, phospholipase A2, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and clot lysis were evaluated. Metabolites were identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). EtOH showed the greatest inhibition of platelet aggregation and phospholipase A2. Ac had the greatest effect on PT and aPTT. AcOEt had the greatest effect on clot lysis. EtOH, with the highest potential, was analyzed by GC-MS; fatty acids and triterpenes were identified. Thus, EtOH showed greater antiplatelet activity and other extracts showed moderate activity. This is a preliminary antithrombotic study. Future research will allow the development of nutraceuticals or functional ingredients for the prevention and treatment of thrombosis.

Treatment of Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Knee with Autologous Iliac Bone Graft and Hyaluronic Acid Scaffold

        Jaime Hinzpeter,Alvaro Zamorano,Maximiliano Barahona,Pablo Campos 대한슬관절학회 2019 대한슬관절학회지 Vol.31 No.2

Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a condition that corresponds to an idiopathic focal lesion affecting the subchondral bone with possible compromise of the stability of the adjacent cartilage. Treatment depends on the size of the lesion, cartilage stability, and the physeal status. The case reported is about an 18yearold male patient who complained of suffering from knee pain for a period of ten months. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a lesion of 2 cm2 in the medial femoral condyle that compromised the subchondral bone, compatible with OCD. He underwent surgery that consisted of filling the subchonral defect with an iliac crest autograft and sealing the defect with a hyaluronic acid scaffold. At the 12month followup, the MRI shows complete healing and the patient has resumed sports activities. Management with autologous iliac crest graft and hyaluronic acid scaffold represents an effective alternative treatment for OCD.

Subjective Evaluation of Mood and Cognitive Functions in a General Neurology Clinic: Patients versus Informants

        Adolfo Jiménez-Huete,Antonio Del Barrio,Elena Riva,Pablo Campo,Rafael Toledano,Oriol Franch 대한신경과학회 2017 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.13 No.3

Background and Purpose We aimed to determine the correlation between subjective evaluations of mood and cognitive functions by patients and informants, and the findings of a battery of neuropsychological tests. Methods We analyzed 74 subjects recruited from a general neurology clinic, comprising 37 patients with cognitive complaints and 37 informants (either relatives or caregivers in close contact with the patients). Four ordinal scales concerning recent memory, verbal expression, initiative, and mood were correlated with the findings of a series of neuropsychological tests and questionnaires using the tau b coefficient. Results The scores for the patients on the scales were most strongly correlated with scores on the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), while the scores for the informants were most strongly correlated with scores on GDS-15, the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline, and the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ). The most significant correlation was between the initiative scale from informants and FAQ (tau b=-0.591, p<0.001), and it was the only one that remained significant after correcting for multiple testing (p Holm=0.013). Conclusions Cognitive complaints from patients mainly reflect their mood, whilst informant reports mainly reflect both the functional ability and mood of the patients.

Optimization of Production, Biochemical Characterization and In Vitro Evaluation of the Therapeutic Potential of Fibrinolytic Enzymes from a New Bacillus Amyloliquefaciens

Fabiana América Silva Dantas de Souza,Amanda Emmanuelle Sales,Pablo Eugênio Costa e Silva,Raquel Pedrosa Bezerra,Germana Michelle de Medeiros e Silva,Janete Magali de Araújo,Galba Maria de Campos Taka 한국고분자학회 2016 Macromolecular Research Vol.24 No.7

The capacity of fibrinolytic enzymes to degrade blood clots makes them of high relevance in medicine and in the pharmaceutical industry. In this work, forty-three microorganisms of the genus Bacillus were evaluated for their potential to produce fibrinolytic proteases. Thirty bacteria were confirmed as producers of fibrinolytic enzymes, the best results obtained for the strain Bacillus amyloliquefaciens UFPEDA 485. The optimization of the enzyme production conditions was done by a central composite design (CCD) star 23 that allowed to define the optimal conditions for soybean flour and glucose concentrations and agitation rate. The highest fibrinolytic activity (FA) of 813 U mL-1 and a degradation of blood clot in vitro of 62% were obtained in a medium with 2% (w/v) of soybean flour and 1% (w/v) glucose at 200 rpm after 48 h of cultivation, at pH 7.2 and 37 °C. The obtained fibrinolytic enzyme was characterized biochemically. Fibrinolytic activity was inhibited by PMSF (fluoride methylphenylsulfonyl - C7H7FO2S) 91.52% and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid - C10H16N2O8) 89.4%, confirming to be a serine- metallo protease. The optimum pH and temperature were 7.0 and 37 oC, respectively, and the enzyme was stable for 12 h. The fibrinolytic activity at physiological conditions of this enzyme produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens UFPEDA 485, as well as its long term stability, demonstrate that it has suitable characteristics for human and veterinary applications, and promises to be a powerful drug for the treatment of vascular diseases.

Clinical and anatomic description of patients with arteriovenous malformation treated with endovascular therapy in a Mexican population

        Mallyolo Eliezer Pelayo-Salazar,Héctor Alfredo Montenegro-Rosales,Jorge Luis Balderrama-Bañares,Pablo Martínez-Arellano,Omar Andrés Campos-Flota,Laura Mestre-Orozco,Julio César López-Valdés 대한뇌혈관외과학회 2023 Journal of Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neuros Vol.25 No.1

Objective: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are benign congenital lesions. The estimated prevalence is 10-18 per 100,000 individuals, with an incidence rate of 1.1-1.4 per 100,000 person-year; only 12% of AVMs present symptoms during life. It is important to study different characteristics associated with AVMs because these patients require multidisciplinary treatment. Methods: A descriptive, observational, longitudinal, and retrospective study was carried out from January 15, 2016 to October 19, 2021. Convenience sampling was used on patients diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation. Sociodemographic data was obtained, such as: sex, age, site, predominant symptoms, clinical debut, type of malformation, data associated with post therapy evolution, type of embolizing agent used, associated complications, Rankin scale, and death. Results: Data from 535 procedures was collected, we calculated an incidence of 4.4 cases per million inhabitants. Ninety procedures in 56 patients that used endovascular therapy were obtained with a female-male ratio of 0.75 and an age distribution of 35±14 (SD). A 36.3±11.5 (SD) mm diameter was registered. There was a 33% success rate for endovascular surgery. Conclusions: The multidisciplinary treatment of AVMs is made up of three pillar techniques: microsurgical resection, embolization, and radio-neurosurgery. It is extremely important to make an appropriate decision, with an emphasis on achieving better functional outcomes for the patient. Although neurological endovascular therapy was initially used as an adjuvant treatment for neurosurgery and radio-neurosurgery, it has been used more and more frequently as the first line of treatment.

Role of Multiparametric Prostate Magnetic Resonance Imaging before Confirmatory Biopsy in Assessing the Risk of Prostate Cancer Progression during Active Surveillance

        Salguero Joseba,Gómez-Gómez Enrique,Valero-Rosa José,Carrasco-Valiente Julia,Mesa Juan,Martin Cristina,Campos-Hernández Juan Pablo,Rubio Juan Manuel,López Daniel,Requena María José 대한영상의학회 2021 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.22 No.4

Objective: To evaluate the impact of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) before confirmatory prostate biopsy in patients under active surveillance (AS). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 170 patients with Gleason grade 6 prostate cancer initially enrolled in an AS program between 2011 and 2019. Prostate mpMRI was performed using a 1.5 tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging system with a 16-channel phased-array body coil. The protocol included T1-weighted, T2-weighted, diffusion-weighted, and dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging sequences. Uroradiology reports generated by a specialist were based on prostate imagingreporting and data system (PI-RADS) version 2. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed based on regression models. Results: The reclassification rate at confirmatory biopsy was higher in patients with suspicious lesions on mpMRI (PI-RADS score ≥ 3) (n = 47) than in patients with non-suspicious mpMRIs (n = 61) and who did not undergo mpMRIs (n = 62) (66%, 26.2%, and 24.2%, respectively; p < 0.001). On multivariate analysis, presence of a suspicious mpMRI finding (PI-RADS score ≥ 3) was associated (adjusted odds ratio: 4.72) with the risk of reclassification at confirmatory biopsy after adjusting for the main variables (age, prostate-specific antigen density, number of positive cores, number of previous biopsies, and clinical stage). Presence of a suspicious mpMRI finding (adjusted hazard ratio: 2.62) was also associated with the risk of progression to active treatment during the follow-up. Conclusion: Inclusion of mpMRI before the confirmatory biopsy is useful to stratify the risk of reclassification during the biopsy as well as to evaluate the risk of progression to active treatment during follow-up.
