Carbon nanotubes are due to their outstanding mechanical properties destined for a wide range of possible applications. Since the knowledge of the material behavior is vital regarding the possible applications, experimental and theoretical studies have been conducted to investigate the properties of this promising material. The aim of the present research is the calculation of mechanical properties and of the mechanical behavior of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The numerical simulation was performed on basis of a molecular mechanics approach. Within this approach two different issues were taken into account: (i) the nanotube geometry and (ii) the modeling of the covalent bond. The nanotube geometry is captured by two different approaches, the roll-up and the exact polyhedral model. The covalent bond is modeled by a structural molecular mechanics approach according to Li and Chou. After a short introduction in the applied modeling techniques, the results for the Young\'s modulus for several SWCNTs are presented and are discussed extensively. The obtained numerical results are compared to results available in literature and show an excellent agreement. Furthermore, deviations in the geometry stemming from the different models are given and the resulting differences in the numerical findings are shown. Within the investigation of the deformation mechanisms occurring in SWCNTs, the basic contributions of each individual covalent bond are considered. The presented results of this decomposition provide a deeper understanding of the governing deformation mechanisms in SWCNTs.
Post-Takeover Financing Activities under Financial Repression: Evidence from China
Oliver M. Rui,Julan Du,Sonia M. L. Wong 한국증권학회 2012 Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies Vol.41 No.3
In China’s state-dominated financial system, many firms, especially non-state-owned or private organizations, face serious restrictions in gaining access to bank and equity market financing. This kind of highly discriminatory financial repression policy has induced some unique post-takeover financing activities, which are consistent with the desire to acquire firms in order to capitalize on their privileges in getting access to external finance. Specifically, takeovers by acquirers facing more serious financing obstacles (private acquirers) tend to show less salient symptoms of tunneling and display patterns of more efficient investment than takeovers by acquirers suffering less serious financing obstacles (state acquirers). Market reaction analysis suggests that these takeovers pose different implications for acquirers’ shareholder value, with takeovers by private acquirers being viewed as value enhancing but takeovers by state acquirers being viewed as value reducing.

Tissue adhesives play an important role in clinical applications and may aid in the treatment of cartilagedefects for improved cartilage integration. However, many fail to satisfy the demand for adequateadhesive strength on wet tissue surfaces and to facilitate sufficient cell migration and extracellular matrix(ECM) deposition at the defect site. Utilizing poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) (POx)-based polymers equippedwith mussel-inspired adhesion moieties and combining them with the natural wound sealantfibrinogen,we fabricated an adhesive biosynthethic hydrogel with tunable mechanical properties and improvedbonding strength. Degradation of the hydrogels could be adjusted by the ratio of amide to ester linkagesof the catecholic functional group at the POx side chain. In an in vitro disc/ring model for lateral cartilageintegration, a benefit in long-term integration was observed with enhanced degradation of the adhesivewithout the expense of bonding strength. Incorporation of degradable ester linkages in the polymerfacilitated cell invasion and strong deposition of cartilaginous ECM at the defect site. Overall, the resultssuggest that the presented injectable adhesive hydrogel, due to its easy tunability, holds great potentialfor cartilage defect treatment and other medical applications.

Given some of the limitations of survey-based methodologies to assess tourism advertising and promotional programs, the objective of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of Mexico’s tourism promotion board campaigns executed through digital media channels between 2012 and 2017 using a quasi-experimental, longitudinal design. A difference-in-difference model is estimated to compare the tourism inflow from countries before and after receiving the online promotion (treatment) with a control group of countries that did not receive it, controlling for demographic and economic variables that influence tourism inflow. The study results and return on investment estimations demonstrate that the digital advertising campaign has a significant effect on annual international visitor arrivals, underscoring the importance of employing cost-effectiveness metrics to determine the impact of marketing investments.

MASSiVE (Multi – Layer Architecture for Semi-Autonomous Service Robots with Verified Task Execution) is a software framework that provides an infrastructure concept for distributed sensor and actuator systems such as service robots, operating in environments that are equipped with smart components. Besides this modular and extensible architecture, a principle of task knowledge specification and verification with processstructures is included in MASSiVE that is able to guarantee task planning in real time along with verified and thus robust system runtime behavior. In this paper the framework is presented briefly. The focus of this contribution is to study how to apply the MASSiVE principles for a typical sample application scenario in KAIST’s Intelligent Sweet Home System. First, the required software components have to be derived, and second the exemplary application of MASSiVE’s specification and verification methods and tools is demonstrated. The flexibility and the structuring capabilities of the MASSiVE framework as well as the impact of fast system deployment will be worked out.
