        Perioperative Short Term Prophylaxis against Deep Vein Thrombosis after Major Abdominal Cancer Surgery: Retrospective Cohort Study

        Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of pharmacological thromboprophylaxis given for short-term duration to the patients who underwent major abdominal surgery for colorectal and gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study was performed in consecutive patients who underwent major abdominal surgery for colorectal and gastric cancer and received short-term pharmacological thromboprophylaxis during hospital stay were enrolled. Complete duplex ultrasonography of the lower limbs was performed for all patients to investigate both symptomatic and asymptomatic deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Results: Overall, 278 patients were evaluated for inclusion and 62 colorectal and 27 gastric cancer patients were enrolled. Of 89 patients, the incidence of total and symptomatic DVT was 4.5% and 2.2%, respectively. The patients with symptomatic DVT were diagnosed within the first four months. The incidence of coronary artery disease, mucinous adenocarcinoma and vascular tumor invasion were significantly higher in patients with DVT (P-values<0.001, 0.009, and 0.02, respectively). Conclusion: Short-term pharmacological thromboprophylaxis after major abdominal surgery for colorectal and gastric cancer does not increase symptomatic DVT rates of patients with low Caprini score. Postoperative DVT surveillance may benefit patients with coronary artery disease, mucinous adenocarcinoma or vascular invasion of the tumor.

        Synthesis and Antimicrobial Evaluation of New 3-Alkyl/aryl-2-[((α,α- diphenyl-α-hydroxy)acetyl)hydrazono]-5-methyl-4-thiazolidinones

        New 4-thiazolidinone derivatives of benzilic acid (α,α-diphenyl-α-hydroxyacetic acid) have been synthesized and evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activities. The reaction of 1-(α,α-diphenyl-α-hydroxy)acetyl-4-alkyl/arylthiosemicarbazides with ethyl 2-bromopropionate gave 3-alkyl/aryl-2-[((α,α-diphenyl-α-hydroxy)acetyl)hydrazono]-5-methyl-4-thiazolidinone derivatives. Their antibacterial and antifungal activities were evaluated against S. aureus ATCC 29213, P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853, E. coli ATCC 25922, C. albicans ATCC 10231, C.parapsilosis ATCC 22019, C. krusei ATCC 6258, T. mentagrophytes var. erinacei NCPF 375, M. gypseum NCPF 580 and T. tonsurans NCPF 245. 3e, 3f, 3g and 3h showed the highest antibacterial activity. Particularly 3a and 3e showed the highest antifungal activities against C. parapsilosis ATCC 22019, T. tonsurans NCPF 245 and M. gypseum NCPF 580.

        Effect of Frying, Grilling, and Steaming on Amino Acid Composition of Marine Fishes

        Amino acid and proximate compositions were determined in six raw and cooked marine fish species that are commonly consumed in Turkey. The changes in amino acid and proximate content were found to be significant for all cooking methods in all fish species. Cooking did, in general, significantly increase the contents of essential, semiessential, and other amino acids compared with raw fish species. Grilled Atlantic bonito, anchovy, and bluefish and fried mullet and hake appeared to be more valuable fish dishes for obtaining the officially recommended appropriate daily intake of essential amino acids for humans. Moisture, fat, ash, and carbohydrate contents of raw fish ranged between 48.01% and 83.05%, 0.87% and 30.48%, 1.10% and 1.61%, and 0.09% and 8.70%, respectively. All fresh fish investigated were high in protein: 11.20–17.14g/100g. Wide variations in protein content (18.11–25.65g/100g) between species and methods of cooking were observed. Fried fish had intermediate fat values, whereas grilled and steamed fishes had a comparatively low value.

        The Role of Platelet-Derived Growth Factor in the Pathogenesis of Sinonasal Polyps: Immunohistochemical Assessment in Epithelial, Subepithelial and Deep Layers of the Mucosa

        Objectives. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) in the pathogenesis of sinonasal polyps. Methods. Study group (groups 1-3) consisted of nasal polyp samples of patients with sinonasal polyps and the control group consisted of inferior turbinate samples of patients without nasal polyp. In group 1, 14 specimens from ethmoid sinus; in group 2, 10 specimens from nasal cavity; in group 3, 10 specimens from maxillary sinus; and in group 4 (control), 9 specimens from inferior turbinate were included. By immunohistochemical staining technique, the PDGF positivity index (PI) in mucosal layers and in the inflammatory cells were assessed at the epithelium (EP), subepithelial layer of lamina propria (SE), and deep paraglandular layer of the mucosa (D). Results. Polymorphonuclear cell (PMNC)-percentage (%) values of ethmoid and maxillary sinus, and the PDGF PI from all cells of ethmoid sinus and nasal cavity were significantly higher than those of the control group. As mononuclear cell-% (MNC-%) increased, the PDGF_EP_basal PI, PDGF_SE_endothelial PI, and PDGF_D_endothelial PI decreased. As PMNC-PDGF PI increased, the PDGF_D_perivascular PI decreased and PDGF_D_endothelial PI increased. As PDGF-MNC PI increased, the PDGF_EP_apical PI, PDGF_SE_endothelial PI, and PDGF_D_endothelial PI decreased. As PDGF-all cells (PMNCs, MNCs, and fibroblasts) PI increased, the PDGF_EP_basal PI and PDGF_D_endothelial PI decreased, and the PDGF_D_perivascular PI increased. Conclusion. We concluded that the PDGF systems play important roles in polyp pathogenesis. Fibroblast-derived PDGF may be more important than MNC-derived PDGF in polyp developing process. Increased perivascular-PDGF-PI in deep layers of the mucosa may result in sinonasal polyp formation by causing an increase in vascular permeability and extracellular edema, and thus promoting migration of inflammatory cells to extracellular area. Tissue oxygenization may be important for the initiation of PDGF release system. Because of this reason, nasal obstruction should be medically treated earlier, and, if necessary, by surgical approaches.

        Measurement of Fuzz Fibers on Fabric Surface Using Image Analysis Methods

        Fuzz on the fabrics, which is the fibers protruded from the fabric surface, is very important in view of appearance quality, since it causes unpleasant appearance on the fabrics and also leads to pilling which makes fabric appearance and soft­ness worse. However, fuzz on fabric surface is measured mostly by subjective methods (human vision) rather than objective methods. Thus, in this study, objective method using image analysis techniques has been developed for the measurement of fuzz on fabric surface. Fuzz on the fabric has also been ranked and rated by experts in order to see the reliability of the results obtained from the fuzz measurement. It was observed that correlation coefficient (r) between rating value and objective mea­surement value was 0.9 and this correlation coefficient value confirmed the reliability of this method.

        Physical and Comfort Properties of the Hoisery Knit Product Containing Intermingled Nylon Elastomeric Yarn

        There are several studies related with knitted fabric containing elastomeric yarn. These studies have been carried out only on fabrics containing naked elastomeric yarn, i.e., without intermingling. And most of them have focused on dimensional and extension-recovery properties of the fabric. Of course, intermingling yarn parameters such as number of knots and draw-ratio will affect the properties and performance of the fabrics. This paper presents a study about the effect of draw-ratio and number of knots, which are important parameters in intermingled nylon-elastomeric yarns, on the physical and comfort properties of hosiery knit products. To see the relationship and significance, bivariate correlation analysis and analysis of variance have been carried out. It has been seen that increase of draw ratio and number of knots lead to an increase in dimensional change, stitch density, fabric weight, and lead to a decrease in fabric spirality, abrasion, fabric wicking (wickability in course direction is less than that of wale direction). Fabric thickness increases with an increase in draw ratio and a decrease in number of knots. The number of knots and the draw-ratio do not affect the fabric drying rate. However, an increase in the draw ratio and the number of knots result in an increase in initial water content before beginning the drying process. But, an increase in initial water content is not so high as to affect the drying rate.

        Preparation of gold decorated MoS2/NiO nanocomposite in the production of a new electrochemical sensor for ascorbic acid detection

        We investigated electrochemical sensing of ascorbic acid by Au-MoS2/NiO modified glassy carbon electrode. The MoS2, NiO, MoS2/NiO were prepared by hydrothermal , and Au-MoS2/NiO was prepared chemical reductionmethod. The characterization of Au-MoS2/NiO composite was carried out using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforminfrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemicalcharacteristics of the Au-MoS2/NiO composite were examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemicalimpedance spectroscopy. Then, differential pulse voltammetry responses of Au-MoS2/NiO modified glassy carbon electrodewere detected towards the ascorbic acid in phosphate buffer (0.1M, pH=7). The ascorbic acid sensor representedlow detection limit of 0.13 M with linear range of 2-50 M, revealing that this sensor gave satisfactory responses. Thepractical feasibility of the obtained sensor was assessed for the detection of ascorbic acid in Vitamin C tablet. Webelieve that this study could help different studies for producing commercially ascorbic acid sensors.

        Trimethyl Chitosan Nanoparticles Enhances Dissolution of the Poorly Water Soluble Drug Candesartan-Cilexetil

        Candesartan-cilexetil, an angiotensin receptor blocker, exhibits low bioavailability after oral administration due to its low water solubility. Chitosan is considered one of the most promising biopolymers for drug delivery as a vehicle and trimethyl chitosan is a water soluble chitosan derivative. Trimethyl chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by the ionic crosslinking of a trimethyl chitosan solution with tripolyphosphate, at ambient temperatures during stirring. SEM and TEM (scanning and transmission electron microscopy) revealed trimethyl chitosan and trimethyl chitosan nanoparticles between 1,000-3,000 nm and 13-350 nm in size, respectively. Candesartan-cilexetil was loaded on trimethyl chitosan nanoparticles, trimethyl chitosan, gum arabic and commercial water soluble chitosan using an ultrasonic effect, and the potential of the polymers to increase the solubility of candesartan-cilexetil was investigated. Trimethyl chitosan nanoparticles are a superior vehicle for increasing the solubility of candesartan-cilexetil compared to trimethyl chitosan, gum arabic or commercial water soluble chitosan.
