Revisiting metaphors for education: a student's perspective
Larisa Nikitina,Fumitaka Furuoka 서울대학교 교육연구소 2011 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.12 No.2
This study examines metaphors about learning produced by a group of eighteen students at a big public university in Malaysia. The learner perspective is placed within a wider discourse on education in order to explore whether the images employed by the learners to describe their learning reflect the dominant conception of education as "production". The metaphors supplied by the participants were analyzed and classified into several themes. None of the metaphors generated by the students alluded to the images that link education with "production". The study contends that the student perspective on education can enrich educational discourse and highlight the previously obscured notions on education and learning.
Country Stereotypes and L2 Motivation
Larisa Nikitina 한국중원언어학회 2015 언어학연구 Vol.0 No.37
The purposes of this study (N=80) were: 1) to explore stereotypes about a target language (TL) country and TL learning motivation among beginner learners of French, German, and Spanish in a big public university in Malaysia, and 2) to examine whether there were relationships between the country stereotypes and the students’ motivation to learn a TL. To collect data, this study administered a questionnaire to the participants. To achieve the first research purpose, this study employed content analysis, which revealed that the respondents had diverse and overwhelmingly positive images about the TL countries. Interestingly, there were some differences in stereotype content across the three TL countries. For example, while technology-related images were prominent in the data collected from the learners of German, such references lacked among the images reported by the participants learning Spanish or French. As to the second research purpose, the findings of statistical analyses indicated that there were statistically significant and positive relationships between country stereotypes and TL learning motivation. The study concludes with discussing implications of the finding for L2 education.

We report for the first time that the medicinal basidiomycete Lentinula edodes can reduce selenium from inorganic sodium selenite (SeIV) and the organoselenium compound 1,5-diphenyl-3-selenopentanedione-1,5 (DAPS-25) to the elemental state, forming spherical nanoparticles. Submerged cultivation of the fungus with sodium selenite or with DAPS-25 produced an intense red coloration of L. edodes mycelial hyphae, indicating accumulation of elemental selenium (Se0)in a red modification. Several methods, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and X-ray fluorescence, were used to show that red Se0 accumulated intracellularly in the fungal hyphae as electron-dense nanoparticles with a diameter of 180.51±16.82 nm. Under designated cultivation conditions, shiitake did not reduce selenium from sodium selenate (SeVI).

Based on the study by Leatham and Stabmann concerned with the rates (v) of amines and phenolic compounds oxidation catalyzed by laccase of basidiomycete Lentinus edodes (Berk.) Sing., as well as on the results of semiempirical quantum chemical computations using the PM3 method, the linear correlations of v and lnv values with first vertical ionization potentials of the substrates molecules and radicals derived from them, spin densities on N and O atoms of the above radicals, and with the radicals reorganization energies have been found.
