        Improvised Layout of Mobile Keypad for Filipinos

        Filipino language is an Austronesian language based on numerous native languages with influences from other major languages such as English and Spanish. The Filipino alphabet is consists of 26 English alphabets, with the addition of two letters, "$\tilde{n}$" and "ng", a total of 28 letters. Filipino language expressions and sentences are still incomparable to English and Spanish even though there are numerous borrowed words from these languages. This study aims to discover the uniqueness in the Filipino language by identifying the frequencies of the letters in common words used and be able to introduce a revolutionary keypad for the Filipinos which is scientifically efficient. To compare the efficiency of the revised and the original keypad, computations using Fitts' Law, Hick-Hyman Law and KSPC were done. Results showed that the new keypad layout was more effective than the original keypad. Introducing a improvised keypad to the Filipinos is one step closer in achieving customized services and features to Filipinos in mobile computing.

        Data Reduction Method in Massive Data Sets

        Many researchers strive to research on ways on how to improve the performance of RFID system and many papers were written to solve one of the major drawbacks of potent technology related with data management. As RFID system captures billions of data, problems arising from dirty data and large volume of data causes uproar in the RFID community those researchers are finding ways on how to address this issue. Especially, effective data management is important to manage large volume of data. Data reduction techniques in attempts to address the issues on data are also presented in this paper. This paper introduces readers to a new data reduction algorithm that might be an alternative to reduce data in RFID Systems. A process on how to extract data from the reduced database is also presented. Performance study is conducted to analyze the new data reduction algorithm. Our performance analysis shows the utility and feasibility of our categorization reduction algorithms.

        Early Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Massive Aspiration during Anesthesia Induction

        Although the incidence is not high in the general surgical population, pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents can result in serious long-term morbidity and mortality. We report a case of early use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to correct severe hypoxemia refractory to conventional mechanical ventilation in a patient with massive aspiration of gastric contents immediately followed by acute lung injury during general anesthesia induction. A 64-year-old woman diagnosed with stomach cancer was scheduled for elective diagnostic laparoscopy. Although there was no sign of gastrointestinal tract obstruction and midnight Nil per Os (NPO) was performed before the operation, pulmonary aspiration occurred during the induction of anesthesia. Despite the endotracheal intubation with mechanical ventilation, severe hypoxemia with hypercapnea persisted. Medical team agreed with applying veno-venous (VV) ECMO, and her blood gas analysis results became stable. ECMO was weaned successfully 9 days after the first aspiration event had occurred. Based on this case, early application of extracorporeal life support can have survival benefits.

        근감소증이 동반된 뇌졸중 환자에서의 재활치료 접근

        Sarcopenia is an ageing-related disease that results in progressive muscle volume decrease. Stroke is also an ageing-related disease and many stroke patients have underlying sarcopenia in whom functional decline may be more severe than neurological damage; however, in the acute stage of stroke, sarcopenia can be underestimated so the patients may not receive appropriate evaluation and treatment. This report suggests the need for diagnosis using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry when sarcopenia is suspected in patients with stroke. Furthermore, if sarcopenia is confirmed, it is necessary to provide rehabilitation intervention tailored to the disease because appropriate treatment can promote the return to daily life. After an accurate diagnosis of sarcopenia, a quantitative muscle strength evaluation, an exercise prescription that considers fatigue and appropriate amino acid supplementation are necessary to establish a strategy for rehabilitation intervention.

      • Application of Webcam for Inspection of Rice Grain Quality by Using Image Processing Technique

        This paper presents the image processing system for quality inspection of rice grains after sorting process by using an ordinary webcam to ensure that rice grains should meet the quality standards and impurity such as grits, dirt and stones should not be found [1]. Moreover, statistical information of rice grains from image processing could be taken into analysis to enhance the efficiency of the sorting process. Image data analysis of rice grains can be divided into 2 main arrangement conditions, non-overlapping and overlapping. In this study, the experiments to inspect rice grains were applied for 24 samples and 18 experimental designs including the complete and incomplete structures, the overlapping and non-overlapping arrangements, and the combination of rice grains from complete and incomplete structures in equal and unequal ratios. From experiments, it was found that the inspection of rice grain quality by using image processing technique and image data recorded by an ordinary webcam was reliable and efficient. The inspection errors under non-overlapping arrangement condition of complete and incomplete structures of rice grains were not observed. The inspection errors of rice grains combined from complete and incomplete structures in equal and unequal ratios were about 0.8% and 1.11%, respectively. However, under overlapping arrangement condition, it was observed that the inspection errors of image processing would be high by up to 53.82% on average.

        Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava Detected Incidentally after Pulmonary Artery Catheterization

        We present a case of pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) placement through the right internal jugular vein, bridging vein and coronary sinus in a patient with previously unrecognized persistent left superior vena cava (LSVC) and diminutive right superior vena cava. A 61-year-old male patient was scheduled for mitral valve repair for regurgitation. Preoperative transthoracic echocardiography revealed dilated coronary sinus, but no further evaluations were performed. During advancement of the PAC, right ventricular and pulmonary arterial pressure tracing was observed at 50 and 60 cm, respectively. Transesophageal echocardiography ruled out intra-cardiac knotting and revealed the presence of the PAC in the LSVC, entering the right ventricle from the coronary sinus. Diminutive right superior vena cava was observed after sternotomy. The PAC was left in place for 2 days postoperatively without any complications. This case emphasizes that the possibility of LSVC and associated anomalies should always be ruled out in patients with dilated coronary sinus.

        Fixed Pupillary Light Reflex due to Peripheral Neuropathy after Liver Transplantation

        A 46- year-old female patient was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after liver transplantation. About an hour later after the ICU admission, she had no pupillary light reflex. Both pupils were also fixed at 5 mm. Patients who undergo liver transplantation are susceptible to neurologic disorders including hepatic encephalopathy, thromboembolism and intracranial hemorrhage. Abnormal pupillary light reflex usually indicates a serious neurologic emergency in these patients; however, benign neurologic disorders such as peripheral autonomic neuropathy or Holmes-Adie syndrome should also be considered. We experienced a case of fixed pupillary light reflex after liver transplantation diagnosed as peripheral autonomic neuropathy.

        원전 계측제어 시스템 보안성환경을 위한 진단기능 평가

        원자력발전소의 안전필수 기능을 수행하는 계측제어 시스템은 원자로의 예상되는 과도상태가 발생되거나 설계기준사고의 결과를 완화하기 위해 원자로 및 주요 기기의 상태를 감시한다. 만일 원자로출력, 냉각재 온도, 또는 증기발생기 수위 등의 상태가 기 정해진 설정치에 도달하게 되면 정확하고 신속하게 원자로를 정지시키는 기능을 수행한다. 이러한 안전필수 시스템은 예상 가능한 사고로부터 인간과 자연을 보호하기 위한 중요 기능을 수행하는 디지털 제어시스템으로써, 비인가 된, 의도되지 않은 변경 등의 취약점으로 인해 신뢰성 있는 운영이 영향을 받지 않도록 보안성환경이 구축되어야 한다. 이러한 보안성환경은 관리적 조치와 기술적 조치를 통해 구현될 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 안전필수 기능을 수행하는 원전 계측제어 시스템의 제어용 소프트웨어 진단기능이 보안성환경을 구축하는 데 효과적인 설계방안인지를 평가하였다. 이를 위해, 제어용 소프트웨어의 무결성을 확인하는 순환잉여검사(CRC) 진단기능에 대한 모의실험을 수행하였다. 본 논문에서의 효과성 평가는 향후 안전필수기능을 수행하는 원전 계측제어 시스템의 설계 및 안전성 분석에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. Safety Critical Instrumentation and Control Systems perform those functions to maintain nuclear power plants’ parameters within acceptable limits established for a design basis events and anticipated operating occurrence to ensure safety function. Those digitalized systems shall protect inadvertent and non-malicious behavior to ensure the reliable operation of systems, known as a Secure Development and Operational Environment(SDOE). SDOE would be established through managerial and technical controls. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of Cyclic Redundancy Checksum diagnostic, which is one of technical controls for SDOE, that can confirm the integrity of software of I&C systems to establish the secure environment. The results of this assessment would be the practical implementation of design and safety review of nuclear I&C systems.
