Bisabolol-Induced Gastroprotection Against Acute Gastric Lesions: Role of Prostaglandins, Nitric Oxide, and K+ATP Channels

        S.B. Bezerra,L.K.A.M. Leal,N.A.N. Pinto,A.R. Campos 한국식품영양과학회 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.6

The effects of Matricaria recutita and α-bisabolol, a bioactive component from Chamomile species, were investigated against gastric damage induced by absolute ethanol (96%, 1mL per animal) in rats. The effects of M. recutita extract and α-bisabolol on gastric mucosal damage were assessed by determination of changes in mean gastric lesion area. Mechanistic studies were carried out at with 100mg/kg α-bisabolol. We further examined the possible participation of prostaglandins, nitric oxide, and K+ATP channels in its mechanism. M. recutita reduced gastric damage in all doses tested. α-Bisabolol at oral doses of 50 and 100mg/kg markedly attenuated the gastric lesions induced by ethanol to the extent of 87% and 96%, respectively. Pretreatments with the nitric oxide antagonist N-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (10mg/kg, i.p.) or with indomethacin, an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, failed to block effectively the gastroprotective effect of α-bisabolol. Furthermore, the α-bisabolol effect was significantly reduced in rats pretreated with glibenclamide, an inhibitor of K+ATP channel activation. Thus we provide evidence that α-bisabolol reduces the gastric damage induced by ethanol, at least in part, by the mechanism of activation of K+ATP channels.

Myrciaria cauliflora Peel Flour Had a Hypolipidemic Effect in Rats Fed a Moderately High-Fat Diet

        Clina´scia R.R. Arau´jo,Elizabethe A. Esteves,Nísia A.V. Dessimoni-Pinto,Ângela G. Batista 한국식품영양과학회 2014 Journal of medicinal food Vol.17 No.2

The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypolipidemic effects of Myrciaria cauliflora peel flour (MPF) in rats. Previously, it was determined the proximate composition, total phenolics, and anthocyanins of MPF. Then, groups of male rats were randomly assigned to one of the five treatment groups. The standard group received a basal diet as recommended by the American Institute of Nutrition (AIN93M). The control group (CTRL) received the AIN93M diet, which added 7% of pork lard. The jaboticaba groups had their diets similar to CTRL, but added MPF at 7 ( JAB1), 10 ( JAB2), or 15% ( JAB3). Serum and liver cholesterol as well as serum levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides (TG), and glucose were evaluated. Fecal output of lipids was also measured. MPF had expressive amounts of fibers (25.28 – 2.52 g/ 100 g), total phenolics (18.95 – 5.27 mg/100 g), and anthocyanins (6.82 – 0.18 mg/100 g). The inclusion of the MPF at three ratios, reduced serum cholesterol and TG compared with CTRL. JAB3 raised serum HDL and reduced liver cholesterol compared with CTRL. JAB3 and JAB2 reduced serum glucose compared with CTRL. JAB groups eliminated more feces and had pH values lower than CTRL. However, there was no difference in lipid fecal output between all groups. MPF has a hypolipidemic potential, especially on reducing serum cholesterol and TG. These effects can be attributed, at least in part, to its fiber and phenolic composition.

Grain Refinement of Al-Mg-Sc Alloy by Ultrasonic Treatment

        N. Q. Tuan,H. Puga,J. Barbosa,A. M. P. Pinto 대한금속·재료학회 2015 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.21 No.1

In foundry practice, ultrasonic treatment has been used as an efficient technique to achieve grain refinementin aluminium and magnesium alloys. This article shows the strong effect of pouring temperature and ultrasonictreatment at various temperatures on the grain refinement of Al-1 wt% Mg-0.3 wt% Sc alloy. Without ultrasonictreatment, a fine grain structure was obtained at the pouring temperature of 700 °C. The average grain sizesharply decreases from 487 ± 20 to 103 ± 2 μm when the pouring temperature decreases from 800 to 700 °C. Ultrasonic vibration proved to be a potential grain refinement technique with a wide range of pouring temperature. A microstructure with very fine and homogeneous grains was obtained by applying ultrasonic treatmentto the melt at the temperature range between 700 and 740 °C, before pouring. Cavitation-enhanced heterogeneousnucleation is the mechanism proposed to explain grain refinement by ultrasound in this alloy. Moreover, ultrasonic treatment of the melt was found to lead to cast samples with hardness values similar to those obtainedin samples submitted to precipitation hardening, suggesting that ultrasonic treatment can avoid carrying out heattreatment of cast parts.

Assessment performance of Eucalyptus clones attacked by the recent invasion of Leptocybe invasa (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae): Implications to invasion pest management

        Carvalho M.A.F.,Pinto I.O.,Sarmento M.I.,Carvalho P.H.N.,da Silva R.S.,Rocha J.P.L.,Sarmento R.A. 한국응용곤충학회 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.25 No.3

Eucalyptus gall wasp, Leptocybe invasa is one of the most important invasive pests of Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) and has been reported in new cultivation areas worldwide. This pest causes severe damage to susceptible plants of the genus Eucalyptus, where it induces galls in the midribs and petioles of young leaves and the internodes of branch and apices. In this work, we evaluated the response of Eucalyptus clones (E. urophylla (Urophylla) and two clone hybrids, one of the E. urophylla × E. camaldulensis (Urocam) and other of E. urophylla × E. grandis (Urograndis) crossings.) submitted to L. invasa collected from areas where L. invasa was recently reported. Our results show that the eucalypt materials cultivated in the areas where L. invasa were reported sensitive to L. invasa attacks. However, the wasp causes fewer galls in the Urocam clone. Thus, the Urocam clone can be preferred for use to reduce population growth of L. invasa in Brazilian savannah areas.
