        Preliminary Report on How Videoconferencing is Used for Korean EFL Learners

        Technology has been used for a long time for foreign language learning and teaching. Its potential has been proven effective and successful for second and foreign language learners and teachers. In English as Foreign Language (EFL) settings where natural target language input is limited, technology-enhanced language education has gained considerable attention. Recent advances in technology make it easy, fast and economical to learn English with exposure, practice, and interaction opportunities in the target language. Such instant worldwide connection made possible by videoconferencing keeps changing the way people learn foreign languages. The aims of the present study were two-fold: 1) to identify how videoconferencing-mediated instruction (VMI) is used for Korean EFL learners and 2) to provide suggestions of how and what to do for an effective and successful introduction of VMI into the Korean English Language Teaching (ELT) field. The results showed that an increasing number of Korean EFL learners benefited from VMI in six different types of videoconferencing-mediated classes. The paper further provides problems and suggestions to successfully apply VMI into Korean EFL settings.

        Comparative Study of Delexical Verbs in an EFL Learner Corpus

        Focusing on the delexical-verb construction, the present study aims at analyzing the essays by Korean college students and comparing the data with those from corpora of native speakers of English. Korean EFL college students are assumed to underuse or misuse the delexical verb structure compared with that of native speakers of English. Results reveal that Korean college EFL learners not only underuse the target structure but also use different nouns preceded by the target verbs. The study also conducts a test of verb phrase preference to see if the participants prefer a single verb to multi-word forms with delexical verbs. It finds that the participants regardless of their proficiency prefer to use a single-verb form rather than a multi-word form. From these results, the study concludes that L2 teachers should pay more attention to the collocation constructions with delexical verbs in their teaching and materials and they need to take a more explicit approach to teaching collocations. Several pedagogical suggestions such as concordancing activities are also made to raise Korean EFL learners’ awareness of delexical-verb structures in general.

        Out-of-Class Listening Activities

          The study is based upon a questionnaire survey which has investigated how a selected group of Korean university students tend to carry out their EFL listening practices in out-of-classroom settings. It discusses a study into the out-of-class listening activities and strategies of 120 Korean learners of English from two different universities. The study finds that 1) the most-common activities are listening to TOEIC or other exam preparation materials, 2) many of the participants exert little effort and time to listening to audio and to watching video featuring native speakers, and 3) favorite study materials and preferred listening device of the participants reflect the state-of-the-art educational technology. The study also explores the individual experiences with the Self-Accessed Language Learning (SALL) facilities on campus as part of out-of-class English listening activities.

        A Survey of Copyright Awareness of ELT Practitioners

        English language teaching (ELT) practitioners create, use, reuse, and even share copyrighted materials as part of their professional daily activities. It is thus extremely important for them to understand and comply with copyright law with respect for the rights of the copyright holders as well as their own rights. This study investigates the copyright awareness of the Korean ELT stakeholders including students, teachers, and materials developers. The respondents of the questionnaire survey consisted of 33 undergraduate or graduate school students, 37 in-service teachers, and 16 materials developers. The results showed (1) their awareness of copyright and the importance of copyright compliance was high while their basic and practical knowledge of the law was very low; (2) they often violate copyright law due to the lack of knowledge of the law; and (3) copyright infringement is widespread among the respondents. The study suggested the importance of copyright education and promotional activities in the ELT field.

        An Investigation Into the Collocations of the English Subtitles of Korean Movies

        This study examined the corpus of English subtitles of the translated Korean movies to investigate the use of collocations in the subtitles and compared them with the corpus of dialogues of Hollywood movie scripts. The researcher used Collogram, a handy tool dedicated to analyzing collocations in corpora, focusing on translated Korean movies in comparison with English movies. The General Service Collocation (GSC) lists of Collogram were used to analyze the quantity and range of the collocations in the corpora. The study found that the English subtitles of the translated movies showed a similar tendency in their collocational range as the top five lists. These made up a majority of collocates in both corpora with 83 percent and 85 coverage of the total collocations, respectively. Even though both corpora were similar in collocational coverage, they shared only a small number of collocations with the spoken section of the British National Corpus (BNC). It is assumed this is due to time and spatial constraints, the relatively small range of collocations at their disposal, and the nature of subtitles, as the subtitle translators need to comply with the norms and rules of audiovisual subtitled translation.

        How to Extract Domain-Specific Vocabulary in ESP

        The purpose of current paper is to demonstrate how to extract domain-specific vocabulary (DSV) in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) fields such as library science and aviation. It also explores a corpus-based analysis of the lexical characteristics of the librarian and aviation English. The vocabulary of an ESP book for librarians and the test materials for airline pilots, air traffic controllers, and aeronautical radio operators were analyzed using a corpus tool, and the findings were interpreted by comparing them with the corpus data. Even though overall feature of the words in Librarian Corpus (LC) and Aviation Corpus (AC) are similar, some unique characteristics of both corpora were identified. The result of the frequency of analysis shows that the LC and AC have its own domain specific vocabulary words, called semi-technical terms, in their context. Suggesting pedagogical implications for corpus linguistic approach to ESP at the end, the present study hopes to contribute to providing a relatively easy methodological means to extract any DSV for English language teaching and pragmatic approach to terminology in translation.
