Modelling and kinetic study of microwave assisted drying of ginger and onion with simultaneous extraction of bioactive compounds

Muhammad Kashif Iqbal Khan,Abid Aslam Maan,Rana Muhammad Aadil,Akmal Nazir,Masood Sadiq Butt,Muhammad Imtiaz Rashid,Muhammad Inam Afzal 한국식품과학회 2020 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.29 No.4

Onion and ginger are rich sources of bioactive compounds which are lost during conventional drying process. The present study was designed to optimize the novel Microwave Assisted Drying and Extraction technique (MADE) for simultaneous drying and extraction/recovery of bioactive compounds from model food products. The time required for drying of samples was 11 (onion) and 16 (ginger) minutes with recovery yield of 87% (onion) and 85% (ginger). The drying time was reduced to 100 times compared to hot air drying and moisture ratio of dried samples was best described by Midilli model. The diffusivities of onion and ginger slices were 1.27 e-11 and 1.43 e-11 m2/s, respectively. Moreover, microwave-based extraction was compared with conventional one. The results of antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents of condensates obtained through MADE were higher compared to conventional method. In short, MADE exhibited better yield of extraction and drying properties compared to conventional methods.

      • Pathogenecity of insect pathogenic fungus Isaria fumosorosea to different aphid species

Muhammad Naeem Malik,Shoaib Freed,Hafiza Tahira Gul,Muhammad Akmal 단국대학교 국제농업협력연구소 2012 단국대학교 국제농업협력연구소 학술대회 Vol.2012 No.1

In the current research, the insect pathogenic fungus, Is aria fumosorosea was assessed for its pathogenecity against adults of different aphid species of wheat and Brassica crop i.e. Schizaphis graminum, Rhopalosiphum padi, Brevicoryne brassicae and Lipaphis erysimi. I. fumosorosea (IF-01) was found effective at all concentrations i.e. 1x106, 1x107 and 1x108 spores/ml on all aphid species, but the uppermost concentration (lx108 spores/ml) provided maximum control within short period of time (P < 0.05). The results showed that the effect of I. fumosorosea on different aphid species was dose and time dependent. I. fumosorosea with LC50 value of 9.02 x 105 proved to be lethal to L. erysimi after 3rd day. Mortality of B. brassicae was observed maximum on highest concentration of 1x108 spores/ml with LC50 value of 1.64 x 107 , while the LT50 values were in range of 1.78-4.53 days for different aphid species treated at various concentrations. By checking the field efficacy of I. fumosorosea against aphid species, this entomopathogenic fungus can be used as possible biological control agent for suppressing aphids.

Diversity and Abundance of Scleractinian Corals in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia: A Case Study of Redang and Tioman Islands

Khodzori Fikri Akmal,Saad Shahbudin,Mohd Hanapiah Muhammad Faiz,Yusof Muhammad Hamizan 한국해양과학기술원 2019 Ocean science journal Vol.54 No.3

The species lists of scleractinian hard corals in Peninsular Malaysia have not been updated for 15 years. The present study aimed to determine the diversity and abundance patterns of scleractinian hard corals at twenty eight fringing reef sites along the coast of Redang and Tioman Islands. Visual photograph analyses of the coral video transect method revealed a total of 128 species from 47 genera in Redang and 239 species from 55 genera in Tioman. Following recent taxonomy of scleractinian corals, coral surveys and past studies revealed a total of 166 species from 53 genera in Redang and 350 species from 67 genera in Tioman. Current data at both islands presented a total of 358 species from 69 genera and 15 families of scleractinian corals with an additional 8 new species records for the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Acropora, Montipora and Porites were the most dominant genera and were found distributed within the coral assemblages. The reefs around both islands can be categorized under “good” coral conditions with the live corals cover from 40.9% to 73.5%. Overall findings indicated that the less affected reef zones by coastal development and human activities at both islands have established good coral conditions and coral genera diversity.

Comparison of Early Succession and Scleractinian Recruitment Between Artificial Live Rocks and Terracotta Tiles

Hamizan Yusof Muhammad,Saad Shahbudin,Naim Mohd Azrul,Khodzori Mohd Fikri Akmal,Hanapiah Muhammad Faiz Mohd 한국해양과학기술원 2021 Ocean science journal Vol.56 No.3

Previous studies indicated that artificial live rock (ALR) has the potential to be used as a substrate for coral juveniles. The present study reported a potential of ALR as an ideal substrate for future artificial reef structure. This study was conducted at three sampling sites, namely Teluk Salang, Teluk Bakau and Teluk Sanggit in Tioman Island, Pahang, Malaysia. The total of 96 samples of ALR (n = 48) and terracotta tiles (n = 48) were deployed and periodically retrieved with three-month interval for 15 months. Retrieved settlement plates were analyzed to compare the total abundance of epibionts and coral density between ALR and tiles. Results showed that ALR plates exhibited a significantly higher total benthic abundance compared to terracotta tile [Independent T-Test; t (22) = 2.650, p = 0.015]. On average, a total of 82.8 ± 5.2% of benthic organisms covered ALR’s surfaces compared to terracotta tiles with 62.5 ± 5.6%. The number of coral spats was significantly higher on ALR by 60.7 ± 10.7% compared to terracotta tiles [Mann–Whitney U Test; U = 10.5, p = 0.003]. In addition, there was a significant difference between sites in the abundance of epibionts as determined by one-way ANOVA [F (2,21) = 11.945, p < 0.001] for both substrates. However, Kruskal–Wallis H test showed that there was no significant difference in terms of coral density at the sites of deployment [H (2) = 3.730, p = 0.155]. The results demonstrated ALR as a new suitable settlement substrate for benthic organisms which can be applied as a substrate for artificial reef, coral propagation and coral transplant.

Biochemical analysis and pathogenicity of entomopathogenic fungi to Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae)

        Naeem Afifa,Freed Shoaib,Akmal Muhammad 한국곤충학회 2020 Entomological Research Vol.50 No.5

Asiatic citrus psylla, Diaphorina citri, Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is an economic pest of citrus groves and a vector of the bacterium, Candidatus Liberibacter spp., one of the causative agents of citrus greening. In order to estimate the infectivity of six different isolates of Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Isaria fumosorosea, fungal bioassay was performed on the adults of D. citri. Adults of D. citri were treated individually with 1 × 105 , 1 × 106 , 1 × 107 , 1 × 108 , 2 × 108 spores/mL fungal concentrations by the immersion method. Subsequent to fungal bioassay, treated D. citri were used to determine the levels of esterase and glutathione S‐transferases (GST) enzymes over a period of 3–7 days. The mortality results suggest that I. fumosorosea isolates (If‐02) caused 82.2% mortality on the seventh day of treatment. However, B. bassiana isolate (Bb‐08) with lowest LC50 (1.4 × 107 spores/mL) proved to be highest potential isolate against D. citri. Biochemical determination of esterase and GST activity assay showed significant differences in activities after infection of fungi. Significantly high activity of esterase was observed by Bb‐01 (27.0 unit per mg protein) on the seventh day, while Ma‐11.1 and If‐2.3 (16.9 and 36.3 unit per mg protein) on the third day post treatment. However, maximum GST's activity was showen by isolates Bb‐08,Ma‐M2 and If‐2.3 (37.6, 1.40 and 10.9 unit per mg protein) on the third day. The current investigation will help to explore the relations between the insect defense system and entomopathogenic fungi. Moreover, the determination of enzymatic activities will be useful for selecting the most pathogenic isolates.

Lethal and trans-generational effects of Metarhizium anisopliae on red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, using age-stage, two-sex life table

        Ahmed Rizwan,Freed Shoaib,Naeem Afifa,Akmal Muhammad 한국응용곤충학회 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.25 No.2

Outbreaks of red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier, in Pakistan are considered a very serious threat to the date industry, owing to the sudden death of date palm trees. Current integrated management strategy largely depends on insecticides, with negative impacts on the environment. Integration of bio-control strategies incorporating entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) may provide an ecologically safe alternative. In the current study the effectiveness of Metarhizium anisopliae Sorokin against R. ferrugineus was investigated using the immersion method and the effects of this fungus on biological parameters of R. ferrugineus were estimated by age-stage, twosex life table software. After treatment with M. anisopliae isolate (Ma-M 2 ), lethal concentration (LC 50 ) 1.2 × 10 6 spores/mL was determined against R. ferrugineus 3rd instar grubs. M. anisopliae infected grubs showed reduced net reproductive rate R o (75.55) and mean generation time T (113.886 days) and intrinsic rate of increase r (0.03797) compared to the untreated group. Also, adult longevity of males and females were significantly reduced in the M. anisopliae-infected group (F 1 ) as compared to the untreated group. Trans-generational studies revealed that grubs stage duration (69.34 days) and fecundity (181.32 eggs) of the M. anisopliae-infected group (F 1 ) were decreased compared to the untreated group. The use of lasting and adverse effects on the biological parameters of R. ferrugineus, indicate that treatment with EPF may provide an eco-friendly management strategy for this pest.

      • Cross Sectional Assessment of Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among Patients with Cancer in Malaysia

Farooqui, Maryam,Hassali, Mohamed Azmi,Knight, Aishah,Shafie, Asrul Akmal,Farooqui, Muhammad Aslam,Saleem, Fahad,ul Haq, Noman,Othman, Che Noriah,Aljadhey, Hisham Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.5

Background: Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) is an important aspect in identifying cancer patients' perceptions of being diagnosed with cancer and the assessment of treatment outcomes. The present study aimedto assess the profile and predicators of HRQoL of Malaysian oncology patients. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study adopting the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) was conducted. All cancer patients attending Penang General Hospital between August-November 2011 were approached. Descriptive statistics were used to assess demographic and disease related characteristics of the patients. All analyses were performed using SPSS v 16.0. Results: Three hundred and ninety three cancer patients met the inclusion criteria and were enrolled in the study. The mean age was 53.9 ($SD{\pm}13$) years. The cohort was dominated by females (n=260, 66.2%). Nearly half (n=190, 48.3%) of the participants were of Malay ethnicity, practicing Islam as their religion (n=194, 494%). Two hundred and ninety six (n=296, 75.3%) had beene diagnosed with cancer within six months to 3 years previously. The most common primary cancer site was breast (n=143, 36.4%). The mean Global Health Status (GHS) score was 60.7 (SD=21.3). Females (mean GHS score of 62.3, p=0.035) with Malay ethnicity (mean GHS score of 63.8, p=0.047), practicing Islam as their religion (mean GHS score of 63.0, p=0.011) had better GHS scores. Patients having medical insurance had good scores (mean 65.6, p-0.021). Marital status was significantly associated with GHS scores (p=0.022). Bone cancer patientshad the lowest mean GHS score of 49.2 (p=0.044). Patients at very advanced stages of cancer featured a low GHS mean score of 52.2 (p<0.001). Conclusions: The present study identified many demographic and disease related factors which may contribute to the HRQoL of cancer patients, pointing to the necessity for improved management of disease symptoms and provision of psychological and financial support.
