Choi, Mona,Lee, Hyeong Suk,Park, Joon Ho Korean Society of Medical Informatics 2015 Healthcare Informatics Research Vol.21 No.3

Objectives

Nursing curricula for undergraduate nursing students need to reflect the information technology used in current nursing practice. A smart-device Academic Electronic Medical Record (AEMR) application can help nursing students access and document records for the clinical practicum. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate the usability of an AEMR application before applying it to the clinical nursing practicum.

Methods

A previously developed EMR application was modified as an AEMR to access patient information at bedside and to practice documentation. We added several features to the current EMR application to create an AEMR environment. We created a series of document forms and several useful scales on an external application, which included nursing admission notes, vital signs, and intake/output. The case scenarios and tasks were created by a research team to evaluate aspects of AEMRs, including their usability and functionality. Five nursing students completed 15 tasks using a think-aloud method with a tablet device.

Results

Minor usability issues were identified and rectified. All participants indicated that they became familiar with the application with little effort. They said that the application icons were intuitive, which helped them find patient information more quickly and accurately.

Conclusions

The application will improve timely access to patient data and documentation for nursing students. We are confident that this AEMR application will enhance nursing students' experience with their clinical practicum, and help them to better understand patient conditions and document them with ideal accessibility.

      • Effects of using mobile device-based academic electronic medical records for clinical practicum by undergraduate nursing students: A quasi-experimental study

Choi, Mona,Lee, HyeongSuk,Park, Joon Ho Elsevier 2018 NURSE EDUCATION TODAY Vol.61 No.-

Abstract

Introduction

The academic electronic medical record (AEMR) system is applied with the expectation that nursing students will be able to attain competence in healthcare decision-making and nursing informatics competencies. However, there is insufficient evidence regarding the advantage of applying mobile devices to clinical practicum.

Objectives

This study aimed to examine the effect of an experiment that introduced a mobile AEMR application for undergraduate nursing students in their practicum.

Methods

A quasi-experimental design was used. The subjects were 75 third-year nursing students enrolled in clinical practicum and were divided into an experimental (practicum with AEMR) and a control (conventional practicum) group. Nursing informatics competencies, critical thinking disposition, and satisfaction with clinical practicum were measured before and after the clinical practicum for each group. The usability of the AEMR application was also examined for the experimental group after the experiment.

Results

After the experiment, the experimental group showed a significant increase in the informatics knowledge domain of nursing informatics competencies in the post-test. The difference in critical thinking between the experimental and control groups was not statistically significant. Regarding satisfaction with the clinical practicum, the experimental group exhibited a significantly higher level of satisfaction in “preparation of a diagnostic test or laboratory test and understanding of the results” and “nursing intervention and documentation” than the control group. Students who participated in the practicum using the AEMR application considered it useful.

Conclusions

The AEMR application was an effective educational method for practicing the immediate documentation of students' observations and interventions and was available at the patients' bedsides. To improve critical thinking, it is necessary to apply a variety of approaches when solving clinical problems.

Highlights

As electronic medical records (EMRs) are widespread, nursing education should incorporate EMRs use in clinical practicum.

Undergraduate nursing students often have limited chances to use the EMR in clinical settings.

The academic EMR application is an effective way to improve nursing informatics competencies for nursing students.

Opportunities to practice documentation at bedsides enhance practicum satisfaction.

Perceived Facilitators and Barriers for Physical Activity in Neighborhood Environments

        Mona Choi,Sumi Jeon,Yunju Kim,Sunghye Cho 한국생활환경학회 2013 한국생활환경학회지 Vol.20 No.6

Background: The purpose of this study is to explore how people perceive neighborhood environment as facilitators and barriers for their physical activity through focus group interviews. Methods: Three focus group interviews were conducted using purposive sampling to explore different perspectives by sex, various ages, and employment status. Focus group participants engaged in physical activity in their neighborhood of Seoul metropolitan area were recruited. Focus groups were conducted until no new themes and categories emerged. Themes of the study were extracted with content analysis. Results: Twenty-one participants took part in the three focus groups with the mean age of 49.6 years. Content analysis identified two main themes, facilitators and barriers. Facilitators in the neighborhood included three sub-themes: free access, places to spend time with family, and open areas for physical activities. Barriers included four sub-themes: accessibility problems, dissatisfaction with facilities, feeling unsafe, and places built as bureaucratic displays. Conclusions: People recognize that various elements of their neighborhood environment play important roles in their desire to engage in physical activity. To promote people"s physical activity and health, nurses should actively participate in policymaking and intervention studies relating to the structuring of neighborhood environments. actions today affect both the present and future generations.

사회적 지지와 우울정도가 관상동맥중재술을 받은 노인의 자가간호 이행에 미치는 영향

        조원정,최모나,김소선,조은희 노인간호학회 2010 노인간호학회지 Vol.12 No.2

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify how social support and depression influence self-care for older adults who received Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). Methods: Data were collected during October and November2009 from 136 older adultswho madea follow-up visit after receiving PCI from a tertiary hospital. Data analyses were done using t-test, ANOVA, and multiple linear regression. Results: The average score for self-care was 3.47 out of 5 points, and the lowest scored sub-domain on self-care was medication. The level of social support was 2.80 out of 4 points. Morethan half of the participants had depressive symptoms. There was a significant difference in self-care by income level (F=3.51, p=.017). The result of multiple linear regression showed that income and self-esteem supportwere significant factors influencing self-care; however, depression was insignificant. Conclusion: In order to enhance self-care of older adults with coronary artery diseases, strategies for economically vulnerable older adults are needed, including educational interventions, insurance coveragefor cardiac rehabilitation programs, and policy support.Engagingin social participation and intervention programs to strengthen self-esteemwill help older adults increase self-care capacity. Additionally, a strategy for enhancing medication self-care specifically for older adults should be considered.

Evaluation on Overtourism in Jeju Island

        Kwang-Woong Choi(최광웅),Mincheol Kim(김민철),Mona Chang(장모나),Bon-Jun Koo(구본준) 제주대학교 관광과경영경제연구소 2019 産經論集 Vol.39 No.2

Purpose - The main purpose of this study is to find out the relative importance of the problems caused by over-tourism in Jeju Island and to provide a clue for policy response to the problems caused by over-tourism in Jeju at this time. Specifically, we will investigate the perception of problems caused by over-tourism felt by Jeju residents through surveying Jeju residents and seek areas that require policy response, especially among problems caused by over-tourism through analysis using IPMA (Importance-Performance Matrix Analysis). Research design, data, and methodology - In this study, SmartPLS 3.0 software was used to perform IPMA (Importance-Performance Map Analysis) analysis based on PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modeling). Result -The first quadrant, where both importance and performance (the degree of awareness of the damage) are measured highly, is the ecological environment and living prices. On the other hand, it can be seen that the items located in the second quadrant are issues of high importance but low level of damage, but the level of destruction of local legitimacy (regional culture and habits) in Jeju Island is still not worrisome. Items located in the third quadrant includes low importance and performance, and relatively low priority, such as stench, privacy violations, and declining kindness. The issues located in the fourth quadrant should be seen as the most pressing issues, such as traffic jams, trash, damage to historical sites and damage to the real estate market Conclusion - The theoretical contribution of this study, firstly, as a relatively recent field of research, was intended to expand the theoretical understanding and base of over-tourism of the island s tourist destination by studying the problem of over-tourism, especially in the field of over-tourism, which lacks a domestic theoretical background, through literature research. Second, by addressing important issues in Jeju, we can compare problems caused by over-tourism in urban areas with those caused by over-tourism in island tourist destinations. In addition, Jeju residents attempted to analyze problems related to over-tourism into a new relationship called criticality and degree of victimization to prevent over-tourism, providing important clues in setting policy priorities for policy authorities.

Overtourism in Jeju Island: The Influencing Factors and Mediating Role of Quality of Life

KIM, Mincheol,CHOI, Kwang-Woong,CHANG, Mona,LEE, Chang-Hun Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.5

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the problems caused by overtourism affect the quality of life of Jeju residents and their perceptions of the overtourism phenomenon by exploring related factors for future policy implications. In the research model, each independent factor related to tourists affects the quality of life of residents, and the mediation variable (QoL) ultimately agrees with overtourism. This study uses Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), which is less influenced by the sample size. The research is based on 360 questionnaires. The test results showed that cultural factors affected the QoL statistically at 1% significance level, and economic factors were significant at 5%. The quality of life variable affects the agreement of overtourism (p-value 1% significance level). An indirect effect analysis on whether each independent factor affects the overtourism factor through the parameter of the QoL of the residents showed that the cultural factor at 5% level statistically affected it, and economic factors were significant at 10%. In conclusion, we recommend implementing both economic and cultural factors to reduce the negative perception of overtourism for the policy planning. Further research in multiple aspects should be continued to overcome the vulnerability of the Island destination tourism.

      • Generation Characteristics of Nanoparticles Emitted from Subways in Operation

Lee, Yongil,Choi, Kyomin,Jung, Wonseog,Versoza, Michael E.,Barabad, Mona Loraine M.,Kim, Taesung,Park, Duckshin [Chinese Association for Aerosol Research in Taiwa 2018 Aerosol and air quality research Vol.18 No.9

In this study, measurements were carried out to identify the generation characteristics of wear particles emitted under a subway cabin during operation. Along with a fast mobility particle sizer, probes were installed under a subway cabin and in a subway tunnel to measure the size distributions of nanoparticles at 1-s intervals. Based on the particle density measured under the cabin minus that measured in the tunnel, the size distribution of wear particles generated under the cabin during deceleration was estimated to be bimodal at 165.5 nm and 6.98 nm. These particles were most likely generated from wheel-rail contact, as the train utilized electric braking (no mechanical force applied). In addition, a change in the wear mechanism appears to have arisen due to the increased temperature of the wheel-rail contact while nanoparticles were being emitted, leading to an initial generation of 165.5-nm particles followed by 6.98-nm particles 1 s later.
