      • Older Women Breast Cancer Survivors: Decision Making, Sources of Information and Wellness Activities in Malaysia

Mohamed, Nor Aini,Muhamad, Mazanah Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.3

The purpose of this study mas to profile older breast cancer survivors in Malaysia. In a survey study, a custom made questionnaire was administered to 69 breast cancer patients and survivors between 60 and 84 years of age in Peninsular Malaysia. The main ethnic group recorded was Chinese, followed by Malay and Indian. The majority of women were married (87%) and had children (84.1%). Just over half (53.6%) had primary and secondary education, whereas 24.7% had higher education. Fifty five percent of the study participants made their own decision on treatment, 60.8% exercised at least 3 times in a week, and 56.6% sought information from specialists. Our study suggests that older breast cancer survivors are aware of the importance of exercise in their daily lives and make attempts to be cancer free (e.g. doing exercise, recreational activity and have good relationships with friends and family).

Modified sulfonated polyphenylsulfone proton exchange membrane with enhanced fuel cell performance: A review

Nor Azureen Mohamad Nor,Mohamad Azuwa Mohamed,Juhana Jaafar 한국공업화학회 2022 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.116 No.-

The fuel cell application is an imperative energy conversion transformation with impressive potential forMalaysian future vitality. The relatively small market of fuel cell technology in Malaysia, causing considerabledevelopment in the domestic market, should be created to ensure a noteworthy contribution toMalaysia’s energy industry. Currently, the research towards advanced polymer electrolyte membranesthat can provide high proton conductivity and good durability is actively being studied. This articlereviews the promising properties of polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) polymer materials as proton exchangemembranes. This alternative polymer material would be best to replace the costly and counter the drawbacksof the perfluorinated membranes in fuel cell systems. Unfortunately, the interconnected hydrophilicchannels of PPSU polymers are not well developed as the Nafion membrane. Thus, the PPSU wasmodified by a sulfonation reaction to confer their protonic conduction properties. In addition, the modificationof the highly sulfonated PPSU by thermal crosslinking as a potential technique to improve themechanical and chemical durability of the PPSU was discussed. Further, the effect of mixing various additivesto develop the PPSU nanocomposite membrane on proton conductivity, physicochemical properties, mechanical properties and fuel cell performance are also discussed in this work.

Malaysian pharmacy students’ perspectives on the virtual objective structured clinical examination during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic

Mohamed Hassan Elnaem,Muhammad Eid Akkawi,Nor Ilyani Mohamed Nazar,Norny Syafinaz Ab Rahman,Mohamad Haniki Nik Mohamed 한국보건의료인국가시험원 2021 보건의료교육평가 Vol.18 No.-

Purpose: This study investigated pharmacy students’ perceptions of various aspects of virtual objective structured clinical examinations (vOSCEs) conducted during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic in Malaysia. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved third- and fourth-year pharmacy students at the International Islamic University Malaysia. A validated self-administered questionnaire was distributed to students who had taken a vOSCE a week before. Results: Out of the 253 students who were approached, 231 (91.3%) completed the questionnaire. More than 75% of the participants agreed that the instructions and preparations were clear and helpful in familiarizing them with the vOSCE flow. It was found that 53.2% of the respondents were satisfied with the flow and conduct of the vOSCE. However, only approximately one-third of the respondents believed that the tasks provided in the vOSCE were more convenient, less stressful, and easier to perform than those in the conventional OSCE. Furthermore, 49.7% of the students favored not having a vOSCE in the future when conducting a conventional OSCE becomes feasible again. Internet connection was reported as a problem hindering the performance of the vOSCE by 51.9% of the participants. Students who were interested in clinical pharmacy courses were more satisfied than other students with the preparation and operation of the vOSCE, the faculty support, and the allocated time. Conclusion: Students were satisfied with the organization and operation of the vOSCE. However, they still preferred the conventional OSCE over the vOSCE. These findings might indicate a further need to expose students to telehealthcare models.

Swarm Intelligence Approach for Angle Stability Improvement of PSS and SVC‑Based SMIB

Nor Azwan Mohamed Kamari,Ismail Musirin,Ahmad Asrul Ibrahim 대한전기학회 2020 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.15 No.3

This paper discusses the efect of multi-objective function in angle stability improvement for a single machine connected to an infnite bus system (SMIB). Minimum damping ratio, ξmin and maximum damping factor, σmax which are commonly used to indicate oscillatory stability condition in power system are merge in certain ratio to produce a multi-objective function, FMO. This new index brings the advantages of the two indices without compromising the weakness of the index involved. In this study, FMO is applied to tune parameters of static var compensator with proportional-integral-derivative controller (SVC-PID) to improve damping efciency in SMIB. The result is compared with a system connected to power system stabilizer attached with lead lag controller (PSS-LL). The parameters of SVC-PID and PSS-LL are optimized by particle swarm optimization method. Validation based on speed response, phase plane and determination of eigenvalues confrms that the proposed FMO is more efective for solving angle stability problems compared to single objective function.

Fusarium Species from Sorghum in Thailand

Mohamed Nor, Nik M.I.,Salleh, Baharuddin,Leslie, John F. The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2019 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.35 No.4

Sorghum is the fifth most important cereal worldwide, spreading from Africa throughout the world. It is particularly important in the semi-arid tropics due to its drought tolerance, and when cultivated in Southeast Asia commonly occurs as a second crop during the dry season. We recovered Fusarium from sorghum in Thailand and found F. proliferatum, F. thapsinum and F. verticillioides most frequently, and intermittent isolates of F. sacchari and F. beomiforme. The relatively high frequencies of F. proliferatum and F. verticillioides, suggest mycotoxin contamination, particularly fumonisins and moniliformin, should be evaluated. Genetic variation within the three commonly recovered species was characterized with vegetative compatibility, mating type, Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLPs), and female fertility. Effective population number ($N_e$) was highest for F. verticillioides and lowest for F. thapsinum with values based on mating type allele frequencies higher than those based on female fertility. Based on AFLP genetic variation, the F. thapsinum populations were the most closely related, the F. verticillioides populations were the most distantly related, and the F. proliferatum populations were in an intermediate position. The genetic variation observed could result if F. thapsinum is introduced primarily with seed, while F. proliferatum and F. verticillioides could arrive with seed or be carried over from previous crops, e.g., rice or maize, which sorghum is following. Confirmation of species transmission patterns is needed to understand the agricultural systems in which sorghum is grown in Southeast Asia, which are quite different from the systems found in Africa, Australia, India and the Americas.

Model development for mechanical properties and weld quality class of friction stir welding using multi-objective Taguchi method and response surface methodology

Mohamed Ackiel Mohamed,Yupiter HP Manurung,Mohamed Nor Berhan 대한기계학회 2015 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.29 No.6

This study presents the effect of the governing parameters in friction stir welding (FSW) on the mechanical properties and weld qualityof a 6mm thick 6061 T651 Aluminum alloy butt joint. The main FSW parameters, the rotational and traverse speed were optimized basedon multiple mechanical properties and quality features, which focus on the tensile strength, hardness and the weld quality class using themulti-objective Taguchi method (MTM). Multi signal to noise ratio (MSNR) was employed to determine the optimum welding parametersfor MTM while further analysis concerning the significant level determination was accomplished via the well-established analysis ofvariance (ANOVA). Furthermore, the first order model for predicting the mechanical properties and weld quality class is derived byapplying response surface methodology (RSM). Based on the experimental confirmation test, the proposed method can effectively estimatethe mechanical properties and weld quality class which can be used to enhance the welding performance in FSW or other applications.

Muhamad, Nor Asiah,Kamaluddin, Muhammad Amir,Adon, Mohd Yusoff,Noh, Mohamed Asyraf,Bakhtiar, Mohammed Faizal,Tamim, Nor Saleha Ibrahim,Mahmud, Siti Haniza,Aris, Tahir Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.7

Cervical cancer is the most common malignant cancer of the female reproductive organs worldwide. Currently, cervical cancer can be prevented by vaccination and detected at an early stage via various screening methods. Malaysia, as a developing country faces a heavy disease burden of cervical cancer as it is the second most common cancer among Malaysian women. This population based study was carried out to fulfil the primary aim of determining the survival rates of Malaysian women with cervical cancer and associated factors. Data were obtained from two different sources namely, the Malaysian National Cancer Registry (MNCR) and National Health Informatics Centre (NHIC) from 1st January 2000 to 31st December 2005. Kaplan Meier analyses were conducted to identify the overall survival rates and median survival time. Differences in survival among different ethnic and age group were compared using the log-rank test. A total of 5,859 patients were included. The median survival time for cervical cancer in this study was 65.8 months and the 5-year survival rate was 71.1%. The overall observed survival rates at 1, 3 and 5 years were 94.1%, 79.3% and 71.1% respectively. The log-rank test finding also showed that there were significant differences in the 5-year survival rate among different ethnic groups. Malays had the lowest survival rate of 59.2% followed by Indians (69.5%) and Chinese (73.8%). The overall 5-year survival rate among patients with cervical cancer in Malaysia is relatively good. Age and ethnic groups remain as significant determining factors for cervical cancer survival rate.

MOHD NOOR, Nor Halida Haziaton,BAKRI, Mohammed Hariri,WAN YUSOF, Wan Yusrol Rizal,MOHD NOOR, Nor Raihana Asmar,ABDULLAH, Hasni,MOHAMED, Zulkifli Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.12

This study investigates the impact of the country's governance on the revenue efficiency of 108 Islamic banks from 26 countries offering Islamic banking and finance products services. The technical efficiencies of individual Islamic banks have been analyzed using the Data Envelopment Analysis method. The data will be pooled across the selected countries and utilize the intermediation approach. The Ordinary Least Square estimation method is employed to examine the impact of country supervision and regulation on the technical efficiency of Islamic banks. As robustness check, the study examines the impact of the level of bank regulations and supervision on the efficiency of Islamic banks operating in different income-level countries. The results found that the stricter the supervisory power, the less strict capital requirement, the tighter the restrictions on non-banking activities, and the stricter the private monitoring enhance statistically significantly the level of efficiency of Islamic banks. In upgrading the regulations and supervision of the Islamic banks, the existing regulatory framework based on the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) must be complemented with the prescriptions on Islamic banking or Shariah compliance diligently, so that the Islamic banks could be regulated accurately and further improve the technical efficiency of their operations.
