A long‐standing hyperglycaemic condition impairs skin barrier by accelerating skin ageing process
Park, Hwa‐,Young,Kim, Jae‐,Hong,Jung, Minyoung,Chung, Choon Hee,Hasham, Rosnani,Park, Chang Seo,Choi, Eung Ho Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2011 Experimental dermatology Vol.20 No.12

Abstract: Uncontrolled chronic hyperglycaemia including type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) induces many skin problems related to chronic impaired skin barrier state. However, little is known about the skin barrier state of chronic hyperglycaemia patients, the dysfunction of which may be a major cause of their skin problems. In this study, we investigated whether a long‐standing hyperglycaemic condition including type 2 DM impairs skin barrier homoeostasis in proportion to the duration and its pathomechanism. We utilized the Otsuka Long‐Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats as an animal model of long‐standing hyperglycaemia and Long‐Evans Tokushima Otsuka rats as a control strain. We confirmed that a long‐standing hyperglycaemia delayed skin barrier homoeostasis, which correlated with haemoglobin A1c levels. OLETF rats as a long‐standing hyperglycaemia model exhibited decreased epidermal lipid synthesis and antimicrobial peptide expression with increasing age. Decreased epidermal lipid synthesis accounted for decreased lamellar body production. In addition, OLETF rats had significantly higher serum levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and elevated levels of the receptor for AGE in the epidermis. A long‐standing hyperglycaemic condition impairs skin barrier function including permeability and antimicrobial barriers by accelerating skin ageing process in proportion to the duration of hyperglycaemia, which could be a major pathophysiology underlying cutaneous complications of DM.

Saving Power in Video Playback on OLED Displays by Acceptable Changes to Perceived Brightness
Minyoung Park,Minseok Song IEEE 2016 Journal of display technology Vol.12 No.5

Displays based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are now widely used in mobile devices, in which they are major power consumers. The power drawn by an OLED display increases nonlinearly with sub-pixel intensities-thus reducing brightness saves appreciable power, but can displease users. This paper examines this tradeoff, and proposes a color blending scheme in which each frame is darkened in a way that reduces power consumption significantly while limiting the visual impact. The target lightness of frames is determined, in the LAB color space, from average intensities of the original frames; and these average values are in turn obtained by adaptive sampling, so as to reduce the computational overhead. An Android smartphone uses 12%-36% less power when running this scheme, compared to standard video playback, while a user evaluation suggested that reducing brightness to a certain extent can be largely unnoticed, or readily tolerated.

Emissions impacts of a modal shift : A case study of the Southern Califormia ports region
Park, Minyoung,Regan, Amelia,Yang, Choon-Heon Jungseok Research Institute of International Logis 2007 JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS AND TRADE Vol.5 No.2
This paper presents a case study examining the emissions impacts of a modal shift from on-road trucks to rail for goods movement through the Southern California ports region, one of the severest nonattainment areas in terms of national air quality standards. Recent completion of the Alameda Corridor, a 20-mile rail expressway that connects the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles with rail mainlines near downtown Los Angeles, provides substantial reserve capacity for port traffic to be diverted from the severely congested road network to the rail line. On-road vehicles emissions were estimated using California mobile-source emissions model, 'EMFAC' that incorporates a set of emissions factors for each vehicle type and an estimate of vehicle activity. These emissions were then compared with the emissions generated from trains increased to carry freight volume diverted from truck traffic. On the basis of year 2000 traffic level, it was estimated that for a 20percent modal shift of port traffic, mobile-source emissions can be reduced up to 0.86 tons for nitrogen oxides and 16 kg for particulate matter per day. The analysis results indicate that encouraging the modal shift for port-related freight traffic should be an integral part of overall air quality improvement initiatives for the study area.

In a faunistic survey for the family Coleophoridae (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea) on Is. Yeonpyeong and Is. Baengnyeong in 2010 and 2006, respectively, eleven species of Coleophora were recognized. Among them, three species; Coleophora adjunctella Hodgkinson, C. chenopodii Oku, and C. kurokoi Oku are reported for the first time from Korea. For the newly recorded species, taxonomical remarks and illustration of adults and genitalia are given.
