Two entomopathogenic bacteria, Xenorhabdus nematophila (Xn) and Photorhabdus temperata temperata (Ptt), maintain monoxenic condition within host insect cadaver by synthesizing and releasing various antibiotics. These two bacteria were cultured in tryptic soy broth during different times, which were screened in their antibacterial activities. Both bacterial culture broth had high antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli at their stationary growth phase. The potent culture broth was used to screen target plant bacterial pathogens using both inhibition zone assay and liquid culture assay. Ralstonia sp. was most susceptible, while Xanthomonas sp. was highly resistant. Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus sp. showed hemi-susceptible. The culture broth was further fractionated into hexane and diethylether extracts. Significant antibacterial effect was found in the diethylether extract

Salvage liver transplantation (LT) is a definite treatment for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatectomy. Combined hepatocellular carcinoma-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CC) is not eligibly indicated for LT because of high post-transplant recurrence. We present a case of salvage living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in a patient with tumor recurrence after surgical resection of cHCC-CC. A 61-year-old male patient diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B underwent right posterior sectionectomy for HCC. The pathological diagnosis revealed presence of a 3.2-cm-sized cHCC-CC with stem cell features and intermediate cell-subtype. Intrahepatic tumor recurrence occurred 9 months later and transarterial chemoembolization was performed. Due to the progress of recurrent tumors, ABO-incompatible LDLT was performed. The explant liver pathology revealed four small masses of cHCC-CC with stem cell features. Pulmonary metastasectomy and chest wall resection were performed for metastatic lesions at 10 months after LT. Multiple tumor recurrence was detected at 21 months after LT with progression despite sorafenib administration. Currently, the patient is alive for past 26 months after LT. In conclusion, the clinical sequences of this case suggest that the role of salvage LT for cHCC-CC is much more limited than that for HCC because the tumor biology of cHCC-CC is more aggressive compared with HCC.
Electronic band structure of surface-doped black phosphorus

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We present an overview on the electronic band structure of surface-doped black phosphorus. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data show that the <I>in situ</I> deposition of potassium atoms on the surface of single-crystalline black phosphorus modulates the band gap in the wide range of 0.0–0.6eV. At zero band gap, the surface layers of black phosphorus become a Dirac semimetal whose band dispersion is highly anisotropic, linear in armchair and quadratic in zigzag directions. In light of theoretical band calculations, we elucidate the mechanism of these band modifications as the giant Stark effect due to strong vertical electric fields induced by potassium atoms.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We provide an experimental study on the band structure of surface-doped black phosphorus. </LI> <LI> The band gap of black phosphorus is widely modulated by the giant Stark effect. </LI> <LI> Black phosphorus with zero bandgap has linear-quadratic band dispersions. </LI> </UL> </P>
Resistive Switching Properties of N and F co-doped ZnO

One of the most promising emerging technologies for the next generation of nonvolatile memory devices based on resistive switching (RS) is the resistive random-access memory mechanism. To date, RS effects have been found in many transition metal oxides. However, no clear evidence has been reported that ZnO-based resistive transition mechanisms could be associated with strong correlation effects. Here, we investigated N, F-co-doped ZnO (NFZO), which shows bipolar RS. Conducting micro spectroscopic studies on exposed surfaces helps tracking the behavioral change in systematic electronic structural changes during low and high resistance condition of the material. The significant difference in electronic conductivity was observed to attribute to the field-induced oxygen vacancy that causes the metal-insulator Mott transition on the surface. In this study, we showed the strong correlation effects that can be explored and incorporated in the field of multifunctional oxide electrons devices.
Outcomes of deceased donor liver transplantation from elderly donors

Background: Favorable outcomes achieved after deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT) suggest that use of elderly donors may be an effective way to expand donor pool. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of adult DDLT using elderly donors. It was a double-arm study that compared posttransplant outcomes to ascertain whether use of elderly donors (aged ≥76 years) has adverse effects on outcome of DDLT. Elderly donor study group included 14 donors aged ≥76 years and elderly donor control group comprised 39 donors aged 66–75 years. Results: Mean donor age of the study and control groups was 78.2±3.1 years and 68.9±2.7 years, respectively (P<0.001). Other clinical parameters were comparable between these two donor groups. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year graft survival rates in the elderly study group were 83.6%, 59.7%, and 59.7%, respectively, and those in the elderly control group were 79.4%, 68.1%, and 59.6%, respectively (P=0.97). The overall 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates after donation from elderly study group were 83.6%, 59.7%, and 59.7%, respectively, and those after donation from control group were 79.3%, 72.1%, and 64.1%, respectively (P=0.74). Regarding overall patient survival, univariate analysis identified pretransplant requirement for ventilator support (P=0.021) and pretransplant renal replacement therapy (P=0.025) as statistically significant risk factors; however, neither was significant on multivariate analysis. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that using an elderly donor graft might not worsen the posttransplant outcomes significantly; thus, advanced age per se may not be an exclusion criterion for organ donation.

Carotenoids are effective antioxidants that are found in various photosynthetic organisms. Marine microalgae are an advantageous bioresource for carotenoid production because they do not compete with other crops for freshwater and arable land. This study reports a newly isolated Dunaliella strain from the Geumhong Saltpan on Yeongjong Island, West Sea, Korea. The new strain was isolated and classified as Dunaliella salina through phylogenetic analysis and was named the OH214 strain (Deposit ID: KCTC14434BP). The newly isolated strain can survive in a wide range of NaCl concentrations (0.3-5.0 M NaCl), but grows well in 0.6 to 1.5 M NaCl culture medium. Under high-light conditions (500 ± 10 μmol photons m-2 s-1), the cells accumulated three times more β-carotene than under low-light conditions (50 ± 5 μmol photons m-2 s-1). The cells accumulated 2.5-fold more β-carotene under nitrogen-deficient (1 mM KNO3) conditions (3.24 ± 0.36 ㎍ 106 cells-1) than in nitrogen-sufficient conditions (>5 mM KNO3). The lutein content under nitrogen-deficient conditions (1.73 ± 0.09 ㎍ 106 cells-1) was more than 24% higher than that under nitrogen-sufficient conditions. Under the optimized culture condition for carotenoid induction using natural seawater, D. salina OH214 strain produced 7.97 ± 0.09 mg g DCW-1 of β-carotene and 4.65 ± 0.18 mg g DCW-1 of lutein, respectively. We propose that this new microalga is a promising strain for the simultaneous production of β-carotene and lutein.
