      • Associations of daily sleep duration and dietary macronutrient consumption with obesity and dyslipidemia in Koreans : A cross-sectional study

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Daily sleep duration is known to be associated with obesity and dyslipidemia.</P><P>This study was performed to examine the interactions between daily sleep duration and the risks of obesity and dyslipidemia according to dietary macronutrient consumption in 14,680 Korean adults using the 5th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.</P><P>Sleep duration was inversely associated with body mass index (<I>P</I> < 0.001), waist circumference (<I>P</I> < 0.001), total cholesterol (<I>P</I> < 0.001), and low-density lipoprotein -cholesterol (<I>P</I> = 0.001). Participants with short sleep durations consumed less dietary protein (<I>P</I> < 0.001) and fat (<I>P</I> < 0.001), and consumed more dietary carbohydrates (<I>P</I> < 0.001). Among participants with the shortest sleep duration (≤5 hours a day), the odds ratio of obesity was found to increase in the high fat consumption group (1.393, 95% confidence interval 1.083–1.790) and decrease in the high carbohydrate consumption group (0.770, 95% confidence interval 0.604–0.983). High fat and low carbohydrate consumption were confirmed to be associated with the risk of obesity in the shortest sleep duration group (≤5 hours a day).</P><P>These findings indicate that sleep duration was negatively associated with obesity and dyslipidemia-related indices in Korean adults. Additionally, the association of short sleep duration with the risk of obesity was potentially changed by dietary fat and carbohydrate consumption.</P>

        Obesity has become one of the major public health problems all over the world. Recent novel eras of research are opening for the effective management of obesity though gene and nutrient intake interactions because the causes of obesity are complex and multifactorial. Through GWASs (genome-wide association studies) and genetic variations (SNPs, single nucleotide polymorphisms), as the genetic factors are likely to determine individuals’ obesity predisposition. The understanding of genetic approaches in nutritional sciences is referred as “nutrigenomics”. Nutrigenomics explores the interaction between genetic factors and dietary nutrient intake on various disease phenotypes such as obesity. Therefore, this novel approach might suggest a solution for the effective prevention and treatment of obesity through individual genetic profiles and help improve health conditions.

        Association between ESR1 rs1884051 polymorphism and dietary total energy and plant protein intake on obesity in Korean men

        ESR1 has been listed in the Human Obesity Gene Map as candidate gene associated with obesity. Thus, in this study, we investigated the effect of the ESR1 rs1884051 polymorphism on obesity-related variables, together with their modulations by dietary intake in Korean men. The obesity-related variables and dietary intake of 3,039 Korean men aged 40-59 years from KoGES database were analyzed. Body weight (P=0.007), BMI (P=0.003), waist-hip ratio (=0.011), fat body mass (P=0.010), and body fat percentage (P=0.040) were significantly lower in subjects with the minor T allele of ESR1 rs1884051 than in subjects carrying the C allele. Moreover, the rs1884051 T allele was associated with a decreased risk of obesity prevalence (P=0.040). Among the subjects whose total energy intake was below the median, carrier of the minor T allele of ESR1 rs1884051 had a lower BMI (P=0.003) when compared with subjects carrying the C allele. In addition, among subjects whose plant protein intake was above the median, carrier of the minor T allele of ESR1 rs1884051 had a lower BMI (P=0.044) compared with subjects carrying the C allele. Our findings demonstrate that there is a significant association between the ESR1 rs1884051 variant and obesity-related variables and this association can be potentially modified by dietary energy and plant protein intake.

        서울지역에 거주하는 체중 감량 시도자의 성별, 연령별 체중 조절 실태

        본 연구는 현재 체중에 대한 인식과 체중 감량 실태를 남녀 각각의 연령에 따른 차이와 성별에 따른 차이를 조사하고자 하였다. 체중 감량 경험이 있는 10~60대의 남녀 각각 60명씩 전체 720명의 대상자들에게 일반사항, 체격, 현재 체중에 대한 인식과 만족 정도와 체중 감량 경험 및 결과를 전화 설문을 통해 조사 분석하였다. 본 연구에서 현재 체중인식과 만족도는 큰 차이를 보여 본인의 체중이 정상이거나 마른 체중이라고 인식함에도 불구하고 전 연령대에서 체중감량을 원하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 체중 감량 실태 조사결과, 연령이 높을수록 체중 감량 시도 횟수가 낮으나 체중감량 후 유지기간이 길었고 남성이 여성에 비하여 이러한 경향이 강하였다. 또한 연령이 높을수록 여러 가지 체중 감량 방법에 대한 만족도가 높고 요요현상을 적게 경험하였고 이러한 경향은 남성에게 강하게 나타났다. 결론적으로, 잘못된 체중 감량 방법에 의해서 희망 체중에 도달하나, 유지기간이 짧고 여러 가지 요요현상을 경험하면서 체중 감량 방법에 대한 만족도도 낮아져 결국 빈번한 체중 감량을 시도하는 악순환을 경험하게 되는 것으로 사료되어진다. 따라서 성별과 연령에 따른 인식과 체중 감량 실태의 차이를 고려하여 개인별 맞춤형 체중 감량을 위한 영양 교육이 필요할 것이라고 사료된다. Among current health-related problems, the issue of over-weight is considered one of the most important, fostering a national interest in body weight loss. In this study, an awareness of one's current body weight and previous experiences of body weight loss were analyzed according to age and gender. The subjects of the study were 720 people (male: 360 and female: 360) aged 10~60 years with previous experiences of attempting to lose weight 1 year prior to this study. Anthropometrics, general characteristics, awareness of one’s current body weight, and the body weight loss practice were analyzed through a questionnaire. Approximately 73.2% of the subjects recognized themselves as obese, and 83.5% wished to lose weight. The older the subjects were, the frequency of attempting to lose weight was lower, and those who succeeded in losing weight maintained their reduced body weight for a longer period. Compared to male subjects, more female reported attempts of losing weight, but the period of maintaining their reduced weight was shorter. The older subjects reported a higher satisfaction rate of the weight loss methods they used, and few of them gained back the weight they lost. This phenomenon was especially more stronger among male than female subjects. From our studies, it may be concluded that attitudes concerning a person’s current body weight and body weight loss practice vary according to age and gender.

        일산 지역 중학생의 간식 섭취에 영향을 미치는 요인

        본 연구는 일산 지역의 중학생들의 개인 특성 요인(성별, BMI)과 가정 내 환경 요인(어머니 직업 유무, 부모 교육 정도)들이 간식 섭취에 미치는 영향을 분석하고자 하였다. 대상자의 성별에 따라서 간식 식품군별 섭취 빈도를 조사한 결과, 남학생은 우유 및 유제품(p<0.05), 씨리얼류(<0.05)와 면류(p<0.01)의 섭취가, 여학생은 과자류(p<0.01)와 사탕?초콜릿류(p<0.01)의 섭취가 유의적으로 높게 나타났다. 대상자를 BMI에 따라서 분류한 결과, 저체중군은 과자류(p<0.05)와 사탕?초콜릿류(p<0.001)의 섭취가 정상체중군 및 과체중군에 비하여 높게 나왔다. 대상자의 어머니가 전업주부인 경우 부모가 준비하는 간식을 섭취하는 비율이 유의적으로 높았고(p<0.001), 과일?과일주스류(p<0.05) 및 우유?요구르트류(p<0.001) 섭취 빈도가 높게 나타났다. 또한 부모의 학력이 높은 군의 조사대상자에서 간식 섭취가 비교적 규칙적이었으나 패스트푸드와 청량음료의 섭취 빈도가 높았다. 본 연구 결과 청소년들의 간식 섭취 및 소비 태도는 성별, BMI, 어머니의 직업 유무와 부모의 교육 정도에 의하여 영향을 받았다. 따라서 청소년들이 간식 섭취 및 소비태도가 올바른 습관으로 정착되어 성인이 되어서도 건강하고 자주적인 식생활이 가능하도록 다양한 요인을 고려하여 청소년 스스로가 바람직하고 계획성 있는 간식을 구입 및 섭취할 수 있는 태도에 대한 교육뿐만 아니라 어머니의 취업으로 인한 청소년의 간식 섭취의 부정적인 영향을 보완할 수 있는 방안이 개발하고 적용해야 할 것이라고 사료된다. The purpose of this study was to analyze factors that influence consumption pattern of snacks of middle school students. The subjects of study were 607 middle school students (male: 316, female: 291) in Ilsan area. The subjects were surveyed by a self-administered questionnaire about anthropometrics, mother's employed status, parents' education level, and snack consumption pattern. Male students showed higher consumption in 'milk and milk products' (p<0.05), 'instant noodles' (p<0.01), and 'cereal' (p<0.05). In the other hand, female students showed higher consumption in ‘biscuits, cookies' (p<0.01) and 'candy and chocolates' (p<0.01). Subjects in underweight group showed higher frequency in the consumption of 'biscuits, cookies' (p<0.05) and 'candy and chocolates' (p<0.001) compared with normal weight or overweight subjects. The subjects with mother not having a job showed higher consumption of snacks under controlling parents (p<0.001), and higher consumption in 'fruit and fruit juice' (p<0.05) and 'milk and milk products' (p<0.01) compared to the subjects with mother having a job. The subjects with parents having higher education level showed higher of consumption in 'fast food'. These results suggest that general characteristics of the subjects and characteristics of family environment may affect consumption pattern of snacks in middle school students.
