Clinical assessment of various imaging systems for dental plaque scoring after the use of 3 different toothpastes

        Meseli Simge,Ekenel Sergen,Korkut Bora,Aksu Burak,Tagtekin Dilek,Yanikoglu Funda 대한영상치의학회 2023 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.53 No.3

Purpose: This study was conducted to compare dental plaque scores obtained through clinical examinations and various imaging techniques, as well as to assess the effectiveness of herbal and conventional toothpastes for plaque removal. Materials and Methods: Thirty volunteers were divided into 3 groups. Each group was given a different toothpaste (from 2 herbal toothpastes and a conventional toothpaste) with which to brush their teeth for 21 days. Both initially and after brushing, dental plaque samples were collected, and plaque on the buccal surfaces of anterior teeth was scored using several imaging systems after staining with a disclosing agent. Specifically, digital dental photography, intraoral digital scanning, and FluoreCam imaging were employed to capture intraoral images. The Turesky Modified Quigley- Hein Plaque Index was used for clinical examination and image analysis. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses and correlational assessments between clinical examination and imaging scores were conducted before and after toothpaste use. The Shapiro-Wilk test and Pearson correlations were utilized. Results: The lowest mean value was observed in the clinical examination without staining, while the highest was obtained using the FluoreCam method. No significant change was found in the level of any microorganism assessed following toothpaste use (P<0.05), with the exception of a decrease in S. mutans levels after using conventional toothpaste (P<0.05). Conclusion: Herbal toothpaste demonstrated plaque-removal effectiveness comparable to that of conventional toothpaste. The use of imaging methods for measuring plaque index has been suggested as a means to educate patients about plaque control and promote ongoing oral care.

Removable Partial Denture in a Cleft Lip and Palate Patient: A Case Report

Ayse Mese,Eylem Ozdemir 대한의학회 2008 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.23 No.5

This clinical report described the oral rehabilitation of a cleft lip and palate patient with removable partial denture. Although implant-supported fixed treatment was presented as part of the optimum treatment plan to achieve the best result, the patient declined this option due to the significant financial burden. Persons with a congenital or craniofacial defect are unique, and oral problems must be evaluated individually to the most ideal treatment. The changes in appearance, function, and psychological wellbeing have an enormous impact on patients’ personal lives and are rewarding for the maxillofacial prosthodontist providing this care.

Analytical Modeling of Magnetically Saturated Inductance by Lambert W Function

Hilmi Gurleyen,Erkan Mese 한국자기학회 2017 Journal of Magnetics Vol.22 No.3

Inductance is one of the most important components in order to make energy conversion in the power converters. The dynamics of power converter are affected by inductance. Therefore, in order to obtain accurate power converter dynamic model, one needs to have accurate inductance model. An inductance value is not always constant as it depends on current. Especially in the saturation region, inductance value decreases when current increases. On the other hand, exact eddy current and hysteresis losses estimation can be obtained with an accurate inductance model. This paper proposes an improved analytical inductance model that considers nonlinear B-H curve of a core material. A nonlinear B-H function is fitted using the Matlab Curve Fitting Toolbox. This function includes magnetic flux density (B) against magnetic field strength (H) variation in the both linear and saturation regions. The magnetic circuit model is obtained using a lumped parameter method and the Lambert W function is used to solve the equation which includes nonlinear core reluctance. In conclusion, a nonlinear analytical inductance model is proposed.

Low magnitude high frequency vibrations expedite the osteogenesis of bone marrow stem cells on paper based 3D scaffolds

        Ozge Karadas,Gulistan Mese,Engin Ozcivici 대한의용생체공학회 2020 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.10 No.3

Anabolic eff ects of low magnitude high frequency (LMHF) vibrations on bone tissue were consistently shown in the literaturein vivo, however in vitro eff orts to elucidate underlying mechanisms are generally limited to 2D cell culture studies. Threedimensional cell culture platforms better mimic the natural microenvironment and biological processes usually diff er in 3Dcompared to 2D culture. In this study, we used laboratory grade fi lter paper as a scaff old material for studying the eff ects ofLHMF vibrations on osteogenesis of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in a 3D system. LMHF vibrations were applied15 min/day at 0.1 g acceleration and 90 Hz frequency for 21 days to residing cells under quiescent and osteogenic conditions. mRNA expression analysis was performed for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin (OCN) genes, Alizarinred S staining was performed for mineral nodule formation and infrared spectroscopy was performed for determination ofextracellular matrix composition. The highest osteocalcin expression, mineral nodule formation and the phosphate bandsarising from the inorganic phase was observed for the cells incubated in osteogenic induction medium with vibration. Ourresults showed that fi lter paper can be used as a model scaff old system for studying the eff ects of mechanical loads on cells, and LMHF vibrations induced the osteogenic diff erentiation of stem cells.

Role of Supervisor Behavioral Integrity for Safety in the Relationship Between Top-Management Safety Climate, Safety Motivation, and Safety Performance

Peker, Mehmet,Dogru, Onur C.,Mese, Gulgun Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2022 Safety and health at work Vol.13 No.2

Background: This study examines whether employee perceptions of supervisor behavioral integrity for safety moderates the relationship between top-management safety climate and safety performance (i.e., safety compliance and safety participation) and the mediated relationships through safety motivation. Methods: Data collected from 389 blue-collar employees were analyzed using latent moderated structural equation modeling. Results: The results indicate that the relationship between top-management safety climate and safety behavior, and the mediating role of safety motivation were replicated. Moreover, the results show that the mediated relationships between top-management safety climate and safety behaviors through safety motivation were stronger for employees who report high supervisor behavioral integrity for safety. Conclusion: The study findings suggest the role of supervisor behavioral integrity for safety in clarifying how the employee perceptions of top-management safety climate transfer to the employee safety behaviors through the motivational pathway.

A Discrete-Time Nonlinear Robust Controller for Current Regulation in PMSM Drives

Turker, Turker,Yanik, Gurcan,Buyukkeles, Umit,Bakan, Faruk,Mese, Erkan The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2017 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.8 No.1

In this paper, a discrete-time robust current controller is proposed for PMSM drives. The structure of the proposed controller is quite simple and does not require high computational resource. The only difference of the proposed controller from the classical dead-beat controller is the integral term which can easily be implemented in a PMSM drive. The stability analysis of the proposed controller is performed accounting in parametric uncertainties, unmodelled dynamics and disturbances in the mathematical model. The boundedness of the dynamical system and asymptotic convergence of dq-axes currents to their reference values are provided under certain conditions. Various simulation and experimental studies are performed and the results taken at different operation conditions show the validity of the proposed controller.
