Effects of methanol extract of Terminalia chebula on antibacterial activity and the generation of superoxide radical in Bacillus subtilis, as well as on syncytium formation and cytopathic activity in virus-infected baby hamster kidney cells were examined. The extract effectively inhibited syncytium formation in a concentration-dependent manner, and infectious virus production was markedly reduced. However, glycoprotein synthesis was not affected. These results collectively indicate that methanol extract of T. chebula potentially inhibit glycosylation by acting as a suppressor of intracellular glycosylation trafficking.

A thin Te interlayer was applied to a Ni/n-InGaAs contact to reduce the contact resistance between Ni-InGaAs and n-InGaAs. A 5-nm-thick Te layer was first deposited on a Si-doped n-type In<sub>0.53</sub>Ga<sub>0.47</sub>As layer, followed by in situ deposition of a 30-nmthick Ni film. After the formation of the Ni-InGaAs alloy by rapid thermal annealing at 300°C for 30 s, the extracted specific contact resistivity (ρ<sub>c</sub>) reduced by more than one order of magnitude from 2.86 × 10<sup>-4</sup> Ω·cm<sup>2</sup> to 8.98 × 10<sup>-6</sup> Ω·cm<sup>2</sup> than that of the reference sample. A thinner Ni-InGaAs alloy layer with a better morphology was obtained by the introduction of the Te layer. The improved interface morphology and the graded Ni-InGaAs layer formed at the interface were believed to be responsible for ρ<sub>c</sub> reduction.

[Purpose] This study investigated the effects of resistance exercise on the Akt-eNOS, the activation of antioxidant protein and FOXO1 in the aorta of F344 rats. [Methods] Male 7 week-old F344 rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: a climbing group (n = 6) and a sedentary group (n = 6). H&E staining and western blotting were used to analyze the rat aortas and target proteins. [Results] Resistance exercise training did not significantly affect aortic structure. Phosphorylation of AKT and eNOS and expression of MnSOD and Ref-1 were significantly increased while FOXO1 phosphorylation was significantly decreased in the resistance exercise group compared with the sedentary group. [Conclusion] We demonstrate that resistance exercise activates the Akt-eNOS and Ref-1 protein without changes to aortic thickness via FOXO-1 activation in the aorta of F344 rats.

Isolation of 2 Bacillus Strains with Strong Fibrinolytic Activities from Kimchi

Two Bacillus strains, K3 and K208, both demonstrating strong fibrinolytic activities were isolated from Kimchi, a traditional Korean preparation of fermented vegetables. Isolates were subjected to various molecular biology based identification methods including RAPD-PCR and identified as B. subtilis and B. velezensis, respectively. Tryptic soy broth (TSB) was found to best maintain both the growth and the fibrinolytic activity of these strains. Culture supernatants were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and fibrin zymography, and the results indicate that a 40 and 27 kDa band seem to be responsible for the fibrinolytic activities of these two isolates and the 27 kDa band was subsequently identified as the mature form of AprE, the major fibrinolytic enzyme. Thus the aprE genes were cloned and the translated amino acid sequences demonstrated 99.3% identity with each other, and 86.5% identity with BsfA, a fibrinolytic enzyme from B. subtilis ZA400 also isolated from Kimchi, and AprE2, a fibrinolytic enzyme from B. subtilis CH3-5 isolated from Cheonggukjang, a traditional Korean fermented soy. Given this B. subtilis K3 and B. velezensis K208 may be promising starter cultures in the production of fermented foods.

Objective: Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain is a common cause of chronic low back pain. Full-endoscopic rhizotomy of lateral branches of dorsal rami innervating SIJ is a potential option for patients’ refractory to medical treatment. The full-endoscopic rhizotomy is sometimes challenging under fluoroscopic guidance. This study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the navigation-assisted full-endoscopic rhizotomy for SIJ pain. Methods: The study was a retrospective match-paired study that enrolled consecutive patients undergoing navigation-assisted full-endoscopic rhizotomy for SIJ pain. The patient demographics, clinical outcomes, and operative parameters of endoscopic rhizotomy were compared with conventional cooled radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment. Results: The study enrolled 72 patients, including 36 patients in the endoscopic group. Thirty-six patients in the cooled RFA group were matched by age as the control. The follow-up time was at least 1 year. Patient characteristics were similar between the groups. The navigation-assisted endoscopic rhizotomy operation time was significantly longer than the cooled RFA. The visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) significantly decreased after each treatment. However, the between-group comparison revealed that the VAS and ODI of the patients after endoscopic rhizotomy were significantly lower than those after the cooled RFA group. There were no postoperative complications in the study. Conclusion: Navigation-assisted full-endoscopic rhizotomy is an alternative to SIJ pain treatment. Integrating intraoperative navigation can ensure accurate full-endoscopic rhizotomy to provide better durability of pain relief than the cooled RFA.
중국 소비자의 세계시민주의가 글로벌제품의 구매의도에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 신흥시장 중에서 경제적, 문화적으로 글로벌화가 가장 빠르고 역동적으로 진행되고 있는 중국시장에서 소비자 세계시민주의에 영향을 주는 변수들 및 결과변수들을 규명하고 이를 실증하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과에 따르면 첫째, 중국소비자의 세계시민주의에 대한 영향요인들(독특성 욕구, 환경친화성, 물질주의적 SNI)은 모두 세계시민주의 형성에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 세계시민주의는 과시적 및 쾌락적 소비성향에 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤으며, 마지막으로 이러한 소비성향들은 다시 글로벌제품의 구매의도에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 소비자의 개인적 차원인 독특성 욕구, 환경친화성, 물질주의적 SNI가 충족되면 세계시민주의가 형성됨을 알 수 있었으며, 또한 본 연구의 결과는 세계시민주의를 통해 글로벌제품 구매에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 기존의 연구결과를 지지하고 있다. This study investigates the antecedents and consequences of Chinese consumers’ cosmopolitanism which affect purchase intention to global products. The first result is that three variables (need for uniqueness, environmentalism, and materialistic SNI) which are investigated by this study positively affect the developing of the cosmopolitanism. Secondly, the cosmopolitanism has a positive impact on conspicuous and hedonic disposition in terms of consumption. Lastly, these tendencies could probably exert their influence over the purchase intention to global products. Therefore, the results indicate that the three variables help to build the cosmopolitanism in the Chinese market and support that purchase of global product is positively influenced through the cosmopolitanism.
