Identification of Genomic Differences between Hanwoo and Holstein Breeds Using the Illumina Bovine SNP50 BeadChip

        Melka, Hailu Dadi,Jeon, Eun-Kyeong,Kim, Sang-Wook,Han, James-Bond,Yoon, Du-Hak,Kim, Kwan-Suk Korea Genome Organization 2011 Genomics & informatics Vol.9 No.2

The use of genomic information in genomic selection programs for dairy and beef cattle breeds has become a reality in recent years. In this investigation, we analyzed single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for Hanwoo (n=50) and Holstein (n=50) breeds using the Illumina Bovine SNP50 BeadChip to facilitate genomic selection and utilization of the Hanwoo breed in Korea. Analysis of the entire genomes showed different spectra of SNP frequencies for Hanwoo and Holstein cattle. The study revealed a highly significant (p<0.001) difference between Hanwoo and Holstein cattle in minor allele frequency (MAF). The average MAFs were $0.19{\pm}0.16$ and $0.22{\pm}0.16$ for Hanwoo and Holstein, respectively. From the total of 52,337 SNPs that were successfully identified, about 72% and 79% were polymorphic in Hanwoos and Holsteins, respectively. Polymorphic and fixed SNPs were not distributed uniformly across the chromosomes within breeds or between the two breeds. The number of fixed SNPs on all chromosomes was higher in Hanwoo cattle, reflecting the genetic uniqueness of the Hanwoo breed. In general, the rate of polymorphisms detected in these two breeds suggests that the SNPs can be used for different applications, such as whole-genome association and comparative genetic studies, and are a helpful tool in developing breed identification genetic markers.

Experimental Analysis of the Aluminium Melting Process in Industrial Cold Crucible Furnaces

        Michal Palacz,Bartlomiej Melka,Bartosz Wecki,Grzegorz Siwiec,Roman Przylucki,Piotr Bulinski,Slawomir Golak,Leszek Blacha,Jacek Smolka 대한금속·재료학회 2020 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.26 No.5

One of the promising technology that guarantee the high-purity of the processed metal is induction skull melting. Thequality of the melting process within such a system strongly depends on the cold crucible design. Hence, the experimentalinvestigation of the cold crucible melting was performed. The experimental investigation was performed for various initialmass of the load. The results of that analysis were used for the assessment of the alloy temperature during the process, freesurface shape and the area as well as the liquid metal emissivity. The collected results of the thermal analysis showed thatthe temperature of molten metal increased within the power input increase. Moreover, results of that analysis showed that thecharacteristic tooth-shaped jags were created mostly at the centre of the cold crucible segments. In addition, experimentalresults are suitable for the numerical models validation and further investigation of the cold crucible design.

Ecotourism site suitability evaluation using geospatial technologies: a case of Andiracha district, Ethiopia

Andualem Befekadu Ambecha,Girma Alemu Melka,Dessalegn Obsi Gemeda 대한공간정보학회 2020 Spatial Information Research Vol.28 No.5

This study is aimed to identify potential ecotourism sites using Geographic Information System and Multi-criteria Decision Analysis in Adiracha district of Sheka Zone, south-western Ethiopia. Landsat ETM Image and STRM data of 2016 with 30 m resolution and topographic map of Ethiopia were used in this study. Ecotourism potential site selection criteria were designed based on 26 stakeholder’s opinions. The final suitability map of ecotourism has been realized by applying an integrated weighted overlay technique of Geographic Information System. The suitability map was categorized into four classes as Suitable, Moderately Suitable, Less Suitable, and Not Suitable. The study attempts to indicate the level of ecotourism suitability at different location in the study area. The outcome of this research is useful to understand the spatial information of Sheka district that can be used for policy makers. This study can be also used as a basis for assessing ecotourism site suitability in other regions.

Investigation of the effect of coffee on body weight, serum glucose, uric acid and lipid profile levels in male albino Wistar rats feeding on high-fructose diet

        Teka Obsa Feyisa,Daniel Seifu Melka,Menakath Menon,Wajana Lako Labisso,Mezgebu Legesse Habte 한국실험동물학회 2019 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.35 No.4

Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverages in the worldwide and is assumed to have protective effects against metabolic syndrome. The present study was aimed at investigating the effect of coffee on body weight, serum glucose, uric acid and lipid profile levels in male albino Wistar rats feeding on high fructose diet. A post-test experimental study was conducted on a total of 30 (9–10 weeks old) male albino Wistar rats. The rats were divided into 6 groups: group I (normal control)-fed on standard chow and plain tap water only; group II (fructose control)-fed on standard chow and 20% of fructose solution; group III–VI (treatment groups)-fed on standard chow, 20% of fructose solution and treated with 71, 142, 213 and 284 mg/kg body weight/day of coffee respectively for six weeks. At the end, body weight, serum glucose, uric acid and lipid profile levels were investigated. Data was entered and cleared by epi-data software version 3.1 and analyzed by one way ANOVA followed by Tukey post hoc multiple comparison tests using SPSS V. 23.00. Statistical significance was considered at p < 0.05. The results showed that body weight, fasting serum glucose and uric acid levels significantly lowered in rats treated with 213 (p = 0.047; 0.049; 0.026) and 284 (p = 0.035; 0.029; 0.010) mg/kg body weight/day of coffee compared to fructose control group. Fasting serum triglycide (TG) and low density lipoprotein (LDL-C) levels showed significant reduction in rats treated with 284 mg/kg body weight/day of coffee as compared to fructose control group (p = 0.031; 0.046) respectively. In conclusion, treating rats with coffee decreased body weight, fasting serum glucose, uric acid, TC, TG and LDL-C, and increased HDL-C in a dose dependent manner in rats feeding on high fructose diet, suggesting that coffee consumption may be helpful in ameliorating metabolic syndrome.
