Asset Holding and Consumption: Evidence from Japanese Panel Data in the 1990s
Masahiro Hori,Satoshi Shimizutani 서울대학교 경제연구소 2004 Seoul journal of economics Vol.17 No.2
The 1990s crash in Japan's stock and land market should have had adverse effects on household consumption. This paper takes advantage of a panel data from Japanese households to evaluate impacts of the wealth gains or losses on households' spending. We find that stockholders' consumption is responsive to stock market movements while this is not necessarily the case for non-stockholders, suggesting the importance of "direct" wealth effects. Moreover, we observe the MPCs out of stock price and real estate price changes are roughly comparable and estimated to be 0.05 to 0.1 slightly higher than previous estimates using aggregate data.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and hormonal features of patients with incidentally discovered adrenal adenomas in relation to corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) testing and the clinical outcome of adrenalectomy. Materials and Methods: Twenty-three consecutive patients with incidentally detected adrenal adenomas were included in this retrospective study. All the patients underwent abdominal computed tomography scans and hormonal assays, including assessment of circadian rhythms of plasma cortisol and corticotropin (adrenocorticotropic hormone, ACTH), a corticotropin stimulation test, and low-dose and high-dose dexamethasone tests. The patients were reevaluated at regular intervals (6, 12, and 24 months) for a median period of 24 months. Subclinical Cushing’s syndrome (SCS) was diagnosed in patients with subtle hypercortisolism who did not present clinical signs of Cushing’s syndrome. Results: We calculated the responsive index (peak value of ACTH in CRH test/baseline value of ACTH in CRH test). Of 23 patients, 6 had Cushing’s syndrome, 8 had SCS, and 9 had a non-functioning tumor. All patients underwent laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Several patients (5 of 6 with Cushing’s syndrome and 2 of 8 with SCS) required cortisol replacement therapy after surgery. The remaining patients required no hormonal replacement after surgery. Those who required hormone replacement had a responsive index of less than 1.2. Those who did not need hormone replacement therapy had a responsive index of more than 2.0. Conclusions: In our limited experience, the responsive index of the CRH test might be a valuable tool for predicting the need for cortisol replacement after surgery in patients with SCS. A 3-month alcoholism rehabilitation program at psychiatric hospitals is common in Japan for patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, many AUD patients are often hospitalized for the treatment of digestive disorders due to alcohol-related liver diseases and pancreatitis. In this sense, AUD patients need to be better supported by professionals and departments in general hospitals. Here we analyzed the problems in alcohol-related medical care in Japan and examined the measures to be taken at general hospitals.

Y-type barium ferrite was prepared by the glass-ceramic method. Glasses with composition of were prepared, and the precipitation behavior of Y-type ferrite from the glass matrix was investigated by heating glass specimens at various temperature. which is a precursor of M-type ferrite was precipitated at about 813 K and an unknown compound, phase X, was precipitated at about 850 K. M-type ferrite and Y-type ferrite started to form at about 923 K and 1103 K, respectively. The formation of Y-type ferrite was int erpreted as the result of the reaction of M-type ferrite with a melt of phase X.

Y-type barium ferrite ( Me=Zn, Co, Cu) expected as an electromagnetic wave absorber were prepared by the glass-ceramic method. The glasses with composition of were prepared. Single-phase powders of Y type barium ferrite were obtained with the composition . The shape of Y-type crystals depended strongly on the heating temperature and changed from a plate-like hexagon to a complex polyhedron with increasing heating temperature. Correlation was recognized between saturation magnetization and crystal shape. Electromagnetic wave absorption characteristics was affected by the saturation magnetization and crystal shape.

Purpose: Plasma neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) levels are associated with several neural disorders. We previously reported that neurotrophins were released from salivary glands following acute immobilization stress. While the salivary glands were the source of plasma neurotrophins in that situation, the association between the expression of neurotrophins and the salivary gland under chronic stress conditions is not well understood. In the present study, we investigated whether NT-3 levels in the salivary gland and plasma were influenced by chronic stress. Materials and Methods: Expressions of NT-3 mRNA and protein were characterized, using real-time polymerase chain reactions, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and immunohistochemistry,in the submandibular glands of male rats exposed to chronic stress (12 h daily for 22 days). Results: Plasma NT-3 levels were significantly increased by chronic stress (p<0.05), and remained elevated in bilaterally sialoadenectomized rats under the same condition. Since chronic stress increases plasma NT-3 levels in the sialoadenectomized rat model, plasma NT-3 levels were not exclusively dependent on salivary glands. Conclusion: While the salivary gland was identified in our previous study as the source of plasma neurotrophins during acute stress, the exposure to long-term stress likely affects a variety of organs capable of releasing NT-3 into the bloodstream. In addition, the elevation of plasma NT-3 levels may play important roles in homeostasis under stress conditions.
