Conceptual design of prestressed slab bridges through one-way flexural load balancing
Marcello Arici,Michele Fabio Granata 국제구조공학회 2013 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.48 No.5
In this paper a study on prestressed concrete slab bridges is presented. A design philosophy based on the concept of load balancing through prestressing is proposed in order to minimize the effects of delayed deformations due to creep. Aspects related to the stress redistribution inside these bridges for timedependent phenomena are analyzed and discussed, by applying the principles of aging linear visco-elasticity. Prestressing is seen as an equivalent external load which counterbalances the permanent loads applied to the bridge, nullifying the elastic deflections due to sustained loads, and thus avoiding the related delayed deformations. An optimization of the structural behavior through the use of one-way prestressing is achieved. The determination of a convenient variable depth of slab bridges and the correspondent layout of tendons is considered as a useful means for applying the load balancing concept in actual cases of structures like long cantilevers or bridge decks. A case-study related to the slab bridges built 30 years ago at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia is presented and discussed, in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach to the conceptual design of prestressed concrete bridges.

Background/Aims: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are chronic entities characterized by local and systemic inflammationand may be associated with thrombosis. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of thromboembolic events (TEE)in hospitalized IBD patients and identify risk factors for their occurrence. Methods: This retrospective, single-center study includedpatients treated at a Brazilian IBD referral unit between 2004 and 2014. Patients hospitalized for more than 48 hoursdue to active IBD and who did not receive prophylaxis for TEE during hospitalization were included. Patients were allocated to2 groups: those with TEE up to 30 days or at the time of hospitalization (TEE-group) and patients without TEE (control-group). Clinical and laboratory characteristics were evaluated. Results: Of 53 patients evaluated, 69,8% with Crohn’s disease (CD) and30.2% with ulcerative colitis (UC). The prevalence of TEE 30 days before or during hospitalization was 15.1%, with 10.8% in CDand 25% in UC. In the TEE group, mean serum albumin was 2.06 g/dL versus 3.30 g/dL in the control group. Patients with albuminlevels below 2.95 g/dL (43.18%) had a higher risk of developing TEE (relative risk, 1.72; 95% confidence interval, 1.17–2.53)(P<0.001). Conclusions: Albumin levels were significantly lower in patients with TEE, and hypoalbuminemia was considered arisk factor for the development of TEE in this population. (Intest Res 2019;17:63-69)

Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGWs) are a useful tool in structural health monitoring (SHM) applications that can benefit from built-in transduction, moderately large inspection ranges and high sensitivity to small flaws. This paper describes a SHM method based on UGWs, discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and principal component analysis (PCA) able to detect and quantify the onset and propagation of fatigue cracks in structural waveguides. The method combines the advantages of guided wave signals processed through the DWT with the outcomes of selecting defect-sensitive features to perform a multivariate diagnosis of damage. This diagnosis is based on the PCA. The framework presented in this paper is applied to the detection of fatigue cracks in a steel beam. The probing hardware consists of a PXI platform that controls the generation and measurement of the ultrasonic signals by means of piezoelectric transducers made of Lead Zirconate Titanate. Although the approach is demonstrated in a beam test, it is argued that the proposed method is general and applicable to any structure that can sustain the propagation of UGWs.
Generalized curved beam on elastic foundation solved by transfer matrix method
Marcello Arici,Michele Fabio Granata 국제구조공학회 2011 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.40 No.2
A solution of space curved bars with generalized Winkler soil found by means of Transfer Matrix Method is presented. Distributed, concentrated loads and imposed strains are applied to the beam as well as rigid or elastic boundaries are considered at the ends. The proposed approach gives the analytical and numerical exact solution for circular beams and rings, loaded in the plane or perpendicular to it. A well-approximated solution can be found for general space curved bars with complex geometry. Elastic foundation is characterized by six parameters of stiffness in different directions: three for rectilinear springs and three for rotational springs. The beam has axial, shear, bending and torsional stiffness. Numerical examples are given in order to solve practical cases of straight and curved foundations. The presented method can be applied to a wide range of problems, including the study of tanks, shells and complex foundation systems. The particular case of box girder distortion can also be studied through the beam on elastic foundation (BEF) analogy.

The development of veterinary dentistry has substantially improved the ability to diagnose canine and feline dental abnormalities. Consequently, examinations previously performed only on humans are now available for small animals, thus improving the diagnostic quality. This has increased the need for technical qualification of veterinary professionals and increased technological investments. This study evaluated the use of cone beam computed tomography and intraoral radiography as complementary exams for diagnosing dental abnormalities in dogs and cats. Cone beam computed tomography was provided faster image acquisition with high image quality, was associated with low ionizing radiation levels, enabled image editing, and reduced the exam duration. Our results showed that radiography was an effective method for dental radiographic examination with low cost and fast execution times, and can be performed during surgical procedures.

Objective: Total laparoscopic nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy (TL-NSRH) has beenconsidered a promising approach, however, surgical, clinical, oncological and functionaloutcomes have not been systematically addressed. We present a large retrospective multi center experience comparing TL-NSRH vs. open abdominal NSRH (OA-NSRH) for early andlocally-advanced cervical cancer, with particular emphasis on post-surgical pelvic function. Methods: All consecutive patients who underwent class C1-NSRH plus bilateral pelvic + para aortic lymphadenectomy for stage IA2–IIB cervical cancer at 4 Italian gynecologic oncologiccenters (Negrar, Varese, Bologna, Avellino) were enrolled. Patients were divided into TL NSRH and OA-NSRH groups and were investigated with preoperative questionnaires onurinary, rectal and sexual function. Postoperatively, patients filled a questionnaire assessingquality of life, taking into account sexual function and psychological status. Oncologicaloutcomes were analyzed using Kaplan-Meyer method. Results: 301 consecutive patients were included in this study: 170 in the TL-NSRH group and131 in the OA-NSRH group. Patients in the OA-NSRH group were more likely to experienceurinary incontinence and (after 12-months follow-up) urinary retention. No patient in theTL-NSRH group vs. 5 (5.5%) in the OA-NSRH group had complete urinary retention (at the>24-month follow-up [p=0.02]). A total of 20 (11.8%) in the TL-NSRH and 11 (8.4%) patientsin the OA-NSRH had recurrence of disease (p=0.44) and 14 (8.2%) and 9 (6.9%) died ofdisease during follow-up, respectively (p=0.83). Conclusion: Our study shows that TL-NSRH is feasible, safe and effective and conjugatesadequate radicality and improvement in post-operative functional outcomes. Oncologicaloutcomes of laparoscopic procedures deserve further investigation.
