Qualitative Analysis of ‘Inanimate Subject+Active Verb’ Structure in Editorials and its Pedagogical Implications in Korean-into-English Translation

        Mah Seunghye 한국통번역교육학회 2015 통번역교육연구 Vol.13 No.2

A particular syntactic pattern, an inanimate subject with an active verb(IS+AV), is quite common in journal articles with scientific topics in English. Asian students, however, are known to have difficulties in employing this pattern in their English writings and translations. For this reason newspaper editorials with animate and inanimate(including abstract) topics are categorized and compared in detail to investigate the context that the pattern is used and the difference between the two kinds of editorials with a specific regard to the frequency of the ‘IS+AV’ pattern. Based on the analysis of 10 editorials from The New York Times, this paper substantiates previous researches that have claimed the ‘IS+AV’ pattern is particularly popular in texts in scientific genre. Besides, the proportions of this pattern in Korean students’ translations of an editorial with an inanimate topic are analyzed to see how much they can employ this pattern in translating an inanimate topic editorial into English. It is drawn from the analysis that the Korean students participated in the test are not skillful in employing this pattern in translating an editorial with an inanimate topic.

Performing Feminism in Book Covers: A Multimodal Analysis of Reprint and Retranslation Cases in South Korea

Seunghye Mah,Ji-Sun Shin 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2023 Asian Women Vol.39 No.4

The feminist movement, which includes certain radical elements, is gaining traction in South Korea. In South Korea’s publishing industry, feminism has demonstrated this evolution, with more visible and bold expressions. Against this background, this study analyzes how the book covers of translated feminist classics have evolved over time and what kinds of messages are transmitted to female readers with increasing exposure to feminism. The reprints and retranslations in the analysis are reflected in the book covers as a space for ideological appeal, sending specific messages derived from the multimodal analysis of the book covers. This study demonstrates how a multimodal analysis of the metafunctions of semiotic resources on book covers can be applied to derive messages for the target readership. Finally, a diachronic comparison of the book covers substantiates the claim that the book-cover design of translated works is closely associated with the social setting of the target culture and its ideological stance.

추리소설 번역에서 결속구조 및 정보성 변화 양상과 그 효과 - 윤고은의 『밤의 여행자들』 영어 번역 분석을 중심으로 -

        마승혜 ( Seunghye Mah ),김순영 ( Soonyoung Kim ) 이화여자대학교 통역번역연구소 2022 T&I review Vol.12 No.1

Mystery is a genre of literature in which authors and readers play logical games. Since the readers make inferences based on textual information, the authors focus more on efficient information delivery. Efficient information transfer can be achieved by adjusting the cohesive links between linguistic elements in texts, which ultimately influences the informativity of the text. This study investigates the transformation of the cohesive structure and the subsequent change in informativity, which occurs in the process of translating The Disaster Tourist from Korean to English. With regard to this specific mystery novel, it is frequently observed that the informativity of certain words and phrases is downgraded in translation as a result of the transformation of the cohesive structure. When the informativity is downgraded, the reader's cognitive exertion is reduced and stronger impressions are made in the reader's mind. However, the informativity downgrade may diminish the reader's excitement at the tension and focus, ultimately eroding the joy of reading genre fiction. (Dongguk University Seoul, Korea)

북한 소설 『고발』 영역본에서 여성 재현 양상 변화 분석

        마승혜 ( Seunghye Mah ),김순영 ( Soonyoung Kim ) 사단법인 아시아문화학술원 2021 인문사회 21 Vol.12 No.5

This study analyzes changes in representing women characters in North Korean novel, The Accusation and its translation. The Accusation aims at criticizing the North Korean regime and discloses that women are actually suffering from economic hardship, food shortage and patriarchal discrimination. Its English translation, however, narrows down the gender gap. The status of women in the closed North Korean society can only be figured out indirectly from novels or films. If the ways of representing women in novels change in the process of translation, readers would not be able to have the right perception on North Korea; therefore, translators are required to be meticulous in translating North Korean novels considering the distinctive circumstance of North Korea and the purpose of the writing.

만화 번역전략 및 역사 만화 번역 특수성: ‘위안부’ 만화 『풀』 번역을 중심으로

        마승혜(Seunghye Mah),김순영(Soonyoung Kim) 한국동서비교문학학회 2021 동서 비교문학저널 Vol.- No.58

Although an increasing number of comics are translated and published globally, translating comics has not received enough scholarly attention. Strategies of translating comics may vary depending on the sub-genres of comics such as educational comics, commercial comics, editorial comics, webtoons, etc. This paper identifies the various strategies applicable for translating comics and analyzes the translation strategies used in translating 『풀』, a historical comic book that depicts a life-time experience of a ‘comfort woman.’ It is found out that the translation attempts to strike a balance between the acceptability by the target readership and the adequacy to the original to preserve and deliver historical facts and experience. Besides, as it deals with ‘comfort women’ issues symbolically in pictures, the underlying emotions, controversial points, and atrocities hidden behind the symbolic pictures are sometimes made explicit in text translation.
