      • Controlling size and magnetic properties of Fe3O4 clusters in solvothermal process

        Madrid, Sergio I. Uribe,Pal, Umapada,Jesus, Felix Sanchez-De Techno-Press 2014 Advances in nano research Vol.2 No.4

Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) of different sizes were synthesized by solvothermal process maintaining their stoichiometric composition and unique structural phase. Utilizing hydrated ferric (III) chloride as unique iron precursor, it was possible to synthesize sub-micrometric magnetite clusters of sizes in between 208 and 381 nm in controlled manner by controlling the concentration of sodium acetate in the reaction mixture. The sub-micrometer size nanoclusters consist of nanometric primary particles of 19 - 26.3 nm average size. The concentration of sodium acetate in reaction solution seen to control the final size of primary MNPs, and hence the size of sub-micrometric magnetite nanoclusters. All the samples revealed their superparamagnetic behavior with saturation magnetization ($M_s$) values in between 74.3 and 77.4 emu/g. $M_s$. The coercivity of the nanoclusters depends both on the size of the primary particles and impurity present in them. The mechanisms of formation and size control of the MNPs have been discussed.

      • Fabrication of Fe 3 O 4 @mSiO 2 Core-Shell Composite Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery Applications

        Uribe Madrid, Sergio I,Pal, Umapada,Kang, Young Soo,Kim, Junghoon,Kwon, Hyungjin,Kim, Jungho Springer US 2015 Nanoscale research letters Vol.10 No.1

<P>We report the synthesis of Fe3O4@mSiO2 nanostructures of different meso-silica (mSiO2) shell thickness, their biocompatibility and behaviors for loading and release of a model drug ibuprofen. The composite nanostructures have superparamagnetic magnetite cores of 208 nm average size and meso-silica shells of 15 to 40 nm thickness. A modified Stöber method was used to grow the meso-silica shells over the hydrothermally grown monodispersed magnetite particles. The composite nanoparticles show very promising drug holding and releasing behaviors, which depend on the thickness of meso-silica shell. The biocompatibility of the meso-silica-coated and uncoated magnetite nanoparticles was tested through cytotoxicity assay on breast cancer (MCF-7), ovarian cancer (SKOV3), normal human lung fibroblasts MRC-5, and IMR-90 cells. The high drug holding capacity and reasonable biocompatibility of the nanostructures make them ideal agents for targeted drug delivery applications in human body.</P><P><B>Electronic supplementary material</B></P><P>The online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s11671-015-0920-5) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.</P>

The role of vehicular applications in the design of future 6G infrastructures

        Jorge Gallego-Madrid,Ramon Sanchez-Iborra,Jordi Ortiz,Jose Santa 한국통신학회 2023 ICT Express Vol.9 No.4

A great lack of 5G design is the traditional bottom-up development of network evolution, which has not effectively considered the requirements of applications and, particularly, vehicle to everything (V2X) applications. This paper provides a service-centric approach towards 6G V2X, with a concise overview of the upcoming hyper-connected vehicular ecosystem and its integration in the whole 6G fabric, analyzing its particular infrastructure needs, as a way to reach key performance indicators (KPIs). We also present a 6G-oriented platform design able to manage the life-cycle of V2X applications across different domains by means of intelligent orchestration decisions.

Domestic Violence in Urban Filipino Families

RAMIRO, Laurie Serquina,MADRID, Bernadette J.,AMARILLO, Ma. Lourdes E. Asian Center for Women's Study ; Ewha Womans Unive 2004 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.10 No.2

The magnitude and characteristics of domestic violence in an urban community in the Philippines are described in this paper, using an ecological framework that tried to link individual, family and community factors. In particular, this study has sought to determine the prevalence of domestic violence and establish significant associations among identified risk factors and violence perpetrated by spouses in urban Filipino families. A random community survey was conducted among ever-partnered women aged 15-49 years and residing in selected barangays in Paco, Manila. The WorldSAFE (World Studies of Abuse in Family Environment) standardized instrument and field methods, translated and pre-tested in Tagalog, were used to collect the data. Information was gathered via interviews conducted by trained enumerators. The results indicate that 47.2 percent of the women respondents had experienced psychological and physical violence at the hands of their intimate partners during their lifetimes. Twenty-me percent experienced domestic violence perpetrated by their current partners in the past year. Of the latter, about 31 percent suffered physical maltreatment and 68 percent experienced psycho-logical abuse. The leading types of physical maltreatment were repeated slapping, kicking and beating, even during pregnancy. Major psychological abuse included insulting, belittling and use of threats. Recommendations have been made to strengthen current programs to assist women victims of domestic violence. Future research should focus on the evaluation of these interventions.

      • Evaluation of rice allelopathy in hydroponics

        KIM, S Y,MADRID, A V,PARK, S T,YANG, S J,OLOFSDOTTER, M Blackwell Science Ltd 2005 Weed research Vol.45 No.1

<P>Summary</P><P>The inhibitory activity of water extracts from the shoots and roots of three rice cultivars, Taichung native 1 (TN1) and IAC165 (both allelopathic rice) and AUS196 (non-allelopathic rice), grown in hydroponics was evaluated. The release of germination inhibitors by allelopathic rice plants into hydroponic solution was also determined with freshly collected solution and XAD-4 resin desorbate. The degree of the inhibition was quantified in terms of root growth in <I>Echinochloa colona</I>, <I>Echinochloa crus-galli</I>, <I>Echinochloa crus-galli</I> var. <I>oryzicola</I>, <I>Triantema portulacastrum</I> and <I>Lactuca sativa</I>. The allelopathic activity of rice was species specific, and depended on source and concentration. Root length of all test species was inhibited by the different concentrations of shoot extract of allelopathic and non-allelopathic rice. However, of the three cultivars, TN1 showed higher inhibition than IAC165 and AUS196 in all test species. Water extracts of shoots and roots significantly inhibited root growth in <I>E. crus-galli</I> but the shoot extract gave a greater inhibitory effect on <I>E. crus-galli</I> than the root extract. Root exudate of TN1 inhibited root elongation of <I>E. crus-galli</I> from 2 weeks after transplanting (WAT) and the inhibition continued for 4 WAT. The results confirmed the previous finding of a laboratory bioassay that the TN1 had allelopathic activity and produced allelochemicals that inhibit growth of some weed species.</P>

Paradoxical Stimulatory Response of Remanent Sphincter of Oddi to Buscapina After Endoscopic Sphincterotomy

        ( Zoltán Berger ),( Ana María Madrid S ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회 2021 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.27 No.4

Background/Aims Endoscopic removal of bile duct stones has become the treatment of choice, which includes endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) in the majority of cases, destroying at least partially the Oddi sphincter (OS). Loss of sphincter function in variable grade has been described, but changes in innervation are not known. Methods Endoscopic manometry of OS was performed in 14 patients after EST with specialized perfused catheter. Pressure values were registered before and after 10 mg Buscapina injected intravenously. Results Choledocho-duodenal pressure gradient was absent in all of 14 patients. Basal OS pressure was zero in 7 and conserved in normal range in the remaining 7. Phasic motor activity was registered in 11 patients and was absent in 3 patients. After 10 mg Buscapina intravenous injection, instead of habitual inhibition, increase in basal OS pressure and in frequency of phasic contractions was observed in 9 patients. This response was not related to age of patients, neither with time elapsed between the EST and manometry, nor the estimated size of papillotomy orifice. Duodenal peristalsis was invariably inhibited in all patients. Conclusions EST destroys not only the smooth muscle of OS, also alters the innervation interrupting the duodeno-sphincteric nerve circuit. This finding questions the use of Buscapina or other anticholinergic agent as spasmolytic in patients after EST. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2021;27:632-638)

Inclusion of Dried Bakery Product in High Fat Broiler Diets: Effect on Pellet Quality, Performance, Nutrient Digestibility and Organ Weights

        Catala-Gregori, P.,Garcia, V.,Madrid, J.,Orengo, J.,Hernandez, F. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.5

A 21- to 42-day feeding study was conducted in Ross male broilers to evaluate the use of dried bakery product (DBP) and the influence of adding fat at different points in the manufacturing process. Six dietary treatments were formulated using a factorial arrangement (3${\times}$2 design) with three levels of fat in the mixer (high: 4.8%, medium: 3.8% and low: 2.8%) with or without DBP (0 and 7%). Additional fat was sprayed on pellets in a post-pelleting liquid application to bring the fat content to a similar level in all diets. Data on pellet quality (before and after post-pelleting fat addition), broiler performance, nutrient digestibility and organ weights were studied. Pellets made with DBP showed higher hardness values when measured before post-pelleting fat addition (p<0.001), although DBP did not affect final pellet hardness or durability. Higher post-pelleting hardness and durability were shown by diets to which a lower level of fat had been added in the mixer (p<0.001). In general, post-pelleting fat application improved durability (p<0.05). However, broiler performance and ileal digestibility were not affected by any of the factors tested. Dietary treatments had a significant but variable effect on carcass yield (p<0.01), although there were no differences among treatments regarding breast and leg yield, abdominal fat or organ weights. The results indicate that up to 7% DBP could be used in the broiler diet without impairing performance, ileal digestibility or organ weights. The place or point of fat addition in the manufacturing process has a strong influence on pellet quality.
