        Acquired Localized Hypertrichosis Induced by Internal Fixation and Plaster Cast Application

        Hypertrichosis refers to increased vellus hair growth and is independent to androgen excess. The acquired localized hypertrichosis (ALH) is one of the typical hypertrichosis,which mainly results from chronic irritation, inflammation,friction, and occlusion by plaster of Paris. Here, we report a young boy who had ALH on his right hand following a closed fracture with internal fixation and plaster cast application. The case is unusual because the hairy area is limited to the operative region of internal fixation. We suggest that the local vascular changes and skin inflammation induced by internal fixation and plaster cast application may be associated with ALH.

      • Covalent Confinement of Sulfur Copolymers onto Graphene Sheets Affords Ultrastable Lithium-Sulfur Batteries with Fast Cathode Kinetics

        <P>Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have received significant attention due to the high theoretical specific capacity of sulfur (1675 mA h g<SUP>-1</SUP>). However, the practical applications are often handicapped by sluggish electrochemical kinetics and the “shuttle effect” of electrochemical intermediate polysulfides. Herein, we propose an in-situ copolymerization strategy for covalently confining a sulfur-containing copolymer onto reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to overcome the aforementioned challenges. The copolymerization was performed by heating elemental sulfur and isopropenylphenyl-functionalized RGO to afford a sulfur-containing copolymer, that is, RGO-<I>g</I>-poly(S-<I>r</I>-IDBI), which is featured by a high sulfur content and uniform distribution of the poly(S-<I>r</I>-IDBI) on RGO sheets. The covalent confinement of poly(S-<I>r</I>-IDBI) onto RGO sheets not only enhances the Li<SUP>+</SUP> diffusion coefficients by nearly 1 order of magnitude, but also improves the mechanical properties of the cathodes and suppresses the shuttle effect of polysulfides. As a result, the RGO-<I>g</I>-poly(S-<I>r</I>-IDBI) cathode exhibits an enhanced sulfur utilization rate (10% higher than that of an elemental sulfur cathode at 0.1C), an improved rate capacity (688 mA h g<SUP>-1</SUP> for the RGO-<I>g</I>-poly(S-<I>r</I>-IDBI) cathode vs 400 mA h g<SUP>-1</SUP> for an elemental sulfur cathode at 1C), and a high cycling stability (a capacity decay of 0.021% per cycle, less than one-tenth of that measured for an elemental sulfur cathode).</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Characteristics of Gas- and Particle-phase Acids and NH₃at Urban and Rural Sites in Korea

        To study the characteristics of ammonia and the related compounds, atmospheric aerosols and gases were collected using a triple filter pack sampler, a low volume air sampler, and a three-stage Andersen air sampler in Seoul and Kangwha Island, Korea from Dec. 1996 to Oct. 1997. Ammonia concentrations showed approximately two times higher in summer than in winter at both sites. The highest HNO₃ levels were generally observed in summertime at two sampling sites. The average mass concentration of PM_2.5 in heavily industrialized Seoul was about three times higher than that of Kangwha. In winter, the sum of NH₄^+ and its counter ions (such as CI^-, NO₃^-, and S0₄²^-) comprised 30-41% of PM_2.5 mass concentration at each sampling site. Temperature dependence of particulate nitrate was examined at the urban sampling site. The formation of the nitrate in the fine mode was dependent not only on the amount of precursors but also on the variation of temperature. (NH₄)S0₄and NH₄HS0₄coexisted with NH₄NO₃and NH₄Cl at each site. According to the summertime backward trajectory analysis. NO₃- showed higher level with air parcels transported from northeast Asian continent. On the other hand, the concentration of SO₄²- showed significantly higher level when air masses originated from Pacific Ocean, southern part of Japan. and Korea.

        Mechanical properties and bearing capacity of CFRP confined steel reinforced recycled concrete columns under axial compression loading

        To study the axial compression behavior of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) confined steel reinforced recycled concrete (CSRRC) columns, 11 specimens of CSRRC columns were manufactured and tested under axial compression loading. The design variables in the experiments included the replacement percentage of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), layers of CFRP, strength of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), profile steel ratio and slenderness ratio. Subsequently, the failure process and modes, load-displacement curves, stress-strain curves, transverse deformation coefficient and stiffness degradation of the specimens were obtained and analyzed in detail. The experimental results showed that the profile steel yielded before the steel rebars in the columns, then the RAC was crushed, and finally the CFRP broke under axial compression loading. The axial bearing capacity of CSRRC columns decreased with the increase of replacement percentage of RCA and slenderness ratio, respectively. However, the CFRP can give full play to its high-strength confinement performance and effectively improve the axial bearing capacity and deformability of columns. Moreover, the profile steel ratio and strength of RAC have significant effects on the initial stiffness of CSRRC columns, and the stiffness degradation rate of columns decreases with the increase of these parameters. Overall, the CSRRC columns exhibit high axial bearing capacity and good ductility deformation ability. Based on ACI 440.2R-08, the modified formula on the nominal axial bearing capacity of CSRRC columns was proposed in this study. The accuracy on the modified formulae was evaluated by the comparison between the calculated values and test values.

      • A study of the adaptive ability of a Chinese Opera : three case studies of the localised Taiwan Bangzi

        Taiwan Bangzi originally came from Henan province in China. Within the evolution in Taiwan society, it reveals a strong tendency of localisation in the past ten years. This paper will examine three contemporary operas from three perspectives: content of scripts, stage-performing methods and music, in order to demonstrate the ongoing and strengthening process of localisation and crossover of Taiwan Bangzi in this decade. The intention and evidence of localisation in Taiwan Bangzi can be found through the analysis in this paper from three aspects and a comparison in figures and music examples.

        Vibration response analysis caused by rubbing between rotating blade and casing

        Two types of blade-tip rubbing due to the static misalignment of the bladed-disk center and casing center and casing deformation are simulated. By applying aerodynamic load in the blade lateral/flexural direction, vibration responses due to blade-casing rubbing are analyzed under the run-up process with constant angular acceleration and the steady-state process at 10000 rev/min. The effects of some parameters, such as the static misalignment e c , casing stiffness k c and casing deformation n p , on the system vibration responses are also illustrated by spectrum cascades, time-domain waveforms of displacement, normal rubbing forces, amplitude spectra and the impulse P in a single blade-casing rubbing period. The results show that blade-tip rubbing will cause amplitude amplification and harmonic resonance phenomena when the multiple frequencies (nf r ) of rotational frequency (f r ) coincide with the first three flexural dynamic frequencies of the blade (f n1 , f n2 and f n3 ). For example, the displacement amplitudes at 3f r , 14f r and 38f r are large and the vibration is dominant near f n1 . In addition, the casing deformation mainly excites the dominant Blade passing frequency (BPF), which is related to the casing deformation coefficient n p . By comparing these impulse values, for the selected parameters in this paper, the casing stiffness has a greater effect on impulse than the static misalignment and casing deformation coefficient. The impulse shows a linear increase trend with the increasing static misalignment, and it decreases under the large n p because the contact time decreases with the increase of n p .

      • Mechanical behaviour of composite columns composed of RAC-filled square steel tube and profile steel under eccentric compression loads

        This research examines the eccentric compression performance of composite columns composed of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC)-filled square steel tube and profile steel. A total of 17 specimens on the composite columns with different recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement percentage, RAC strength, width to thickness ratio of square steel tube, profile steel ratio, eccentricity and slenderness ratio were subjected to eccentric compression tests. The failure process and characteristic of specimens under eccentric compression loading were observed in detail. The load-lateral deflection curves, load-train curves and strain distribution on the cross section of the composite columns were also obtained and described on the basis of test data. Results corroborate that the failure characteristics and modes of the specimens with different design parameters were basically similar under eccentric compression loads. The compression side of square steel tube yields first, followed by the compression side of profile steel. Finally, the RAC in the columns was crushed and the apparent local bulging of square steel tube was also observed, which meant that the composite column was damaged and failed. The composite columns under eccentric compression loading suffered from typical bending failure. Moreover, the eccentric bearing capacity and deformation of the specimens decreased as the RCA replacement percentage and width to thickness ratio of square steel tube increased, respectively. Slenderness ratio and eccentricity had a significantly adverse effect on the eccentric compression performance of composite columns. But overall, the composite columns generally had high-bearing capacity and good deformation. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the composite columns under eccentric compression loads was also analysed in detail, and the calculation formulas on the eccentric compression capacity of composite columns were proposed via the limit equilibrium analysis method. The calculation results of the eccentric compression capacity of columns are consistent with the test results, which verify the validity of the formulas, and the conclusions can serve as references for the engineering application of this kind of composite columns.

      • From Henan Opera to Taiwan Bangzi-Localisation and Identity of Taiwan Bangzi

        A foreign Henan Opera has survived, changed, and localised and established its Taiwan identity from Henan Opera to Taiwan Bangzi for more than sixty years in Taiwan, since it was introduced from China to Taiwan under a historical occasion. This paper examines the localising process from Henan Opera to Taiwan Bangzi in Taiwan from four perspectives: social and cultural background, performers, contents of scripts, and textures of music. The time frame is divided into two periods (1947-1987 and 1987-2013) to discuss the processes separately.

      • Hysteretic behaviors and calculation model of steel reinforced recycled concrete filled circular steel tube columns

        To realize the recycling utilization of waste concrete and alleviate the shortage of resources, 11 specimens of steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) filled circular steel tube columns were designed and manufactured in this study, and the cyclic loading tests on the specimens of columns were also carried out respectively. The hysteretic curves, skeleton curves and performance indicators of columns were obtained and analysed in detail. Besides, the finite element model of columns was established through OpenSees software, which considered the adverse effect of recycled coarse aggregate (RA) replacement rates and the constraint effect of circular steel tube on internal RAC. The numerical calculation curves of columns are in good agreement with the experimental curves, which shows that the numerical model is relatively reasonable. On this basis, a series of nonlinear parameters analysis on the hysteretic behaviors of columns were also investigated. The results are as follows: When the replacement rates of RA increases from 0 to 100%, the peak loads of columns decreases by 7.78% and the ductility decreases slightly. With the increase of axial compression ratio, the bearing capacity of columns increases first and then decreases, but the ductility of columns decreases rapidly. Increasing the wall thickness of circular steel tube is very profitable to improve the bearing capacity and ductility of columns. When the section steel ratio increases from 5.54% to 9.99%, although the bearing capacity of columns is improved, it has no obvious contribution to improve the ductility of columns. With the decrease of shear span ratio, the bearing capacity of columns increases obviously, but the ductility decreases, and the failure mode of columns develops into brittle shear failure. Therefore, in the engineering design of columns, the situation of small shear span ratio (i.e., short columns) should be avoided as far as possible. Based on this, the calculation model on the skeleton curves of columns was established by the theoretical analysis and fitting method, so as to determine the main characteristic points in the model. The effectiveness of skeleton curve model is verified by comparing with the test skeleton curves.

        Biological characterization of mesenchymal stem cells from bovine umbilical cord

        Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multi-potential cells that are able to proliferate and differentiate into othercell types. Much research has been done on the MSCs from the umbilical cord (UCMSCs) in human, mice, andavian, but little literature has been published about these cells in big livestock. Here, we choose Luxi cattle asthe experimental animal, we describe an external culture of the UCMSCs from it and summarize the biologicalcharacteristics of these cells, e.g., morphologic appearance, surface antigens, colony-forming ability, geneexpression, and differentiation potential were detected via using immunofluorescence and reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The induced cells, osteoblast, lipoblast, hepatocyte, islet cells, andneurocyte were identified by Alizarin red staining, Oil-red-O staining, Periodic acid-schiff staining, andDithizone staining and RT-PCR detection for specific genes. Results suggest that biological characteristics ofthe UCMSCs were similar to those of MSCs previously analyzed. The primary UCMSCs were sub-cultured topassage 32, the UCMSCs expressed gene CD29, CD44, CD73, CD90, and CD166, induced cells illustratedtypical staining, and expressed specific genes, which indicate that the UCMSCs could be a novel alternativesource of MSCs for experimental and clinical applications.
