Synergistic effects of the addition of KI on the corrosion inhibitive performance of a coumarin derivative on analuminum alloy in 1.0 M H2SO4 at different temperatures were studied using various electrochemicalmeasurements. Density functional theory was used to calculate the quantum chemical parameters of thecoumarin derivative. The experimental results showed that the coumarin derivative is considered as a mixedtypeinhibitor. The corrosion potential values were almost unchanged upon the addition of PBBC to the acidicsolution. The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing inhibitor concentration and increases further inthe presence of 6.02 mM KI but decreases significantly at higher temperature. The adsorption of PBBC obeyedthe Langmuir isotherm, and being chemically adsorbed at lower temperatures, while physical adsorption isfavoured at higher temperature. The theoretical results indicated that the coumarin derivative was adsorbedonto the surface of Al2024 through the sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen atoms.
Support for a Campus Tobacco-Free Policy among Non-Smokers: Findings from a Developing Country
Yasin, Siti Munira,Isa, Mohamad Rodi,Fadzil, Mohd Ariff,Zamhuri, Mohammad Idris,Selamat, Mohamad Ikhsan,Ruzlin, Aimi Nadira Mat,Ibrahim, Nik Shamsidah Nik,Ismail, Zaliha,Majeed, Abu Bakar Abdul Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.1
Background: A tobacco-free workplace policy is identified as an effective means to reduce tobacco use and protect people from second-hand smoke; however, the number of tobacco-free policies (TFP) remains very low in workplaces in Malaysia. This study explored the factors affecting support for a tobacco-free policy on two healthcare campuses in Malaysia, prior to the implementation of TFP. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 286 non-smokers from two healthcare training centres and two nearby colleges in Malaysia from January 2015 to April 2015. A standardized questionnaire was administered via staff and student emails. The questionnaire collected information on sociodemographic characteristics, support for a tobacco-free policy and perceived respiratory and sensory symptoms due to tobacco exposure. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the independent effects of supporting a tobacco-free campus. Results: The percentage of individuals supporting completely tobacco-free facilities was 83.2% (N=238), as opposed to 16.7% (N=48) in support of partially tobacco-free facilities. Compared to the supporters of partially tobacco-free facilities, non-smokers who supported completely tobacco-free health facilities were more likely to be female, have higher education levels, to be very concerned about the effects of other people smoking on their health and to perceive a tobacco-free policy as very important. In addition, they perceived that tobacco smoke bothered them at work by causing headaches and coughs and, in the past 4 weeks, had experienced difficulty breathing. In the multivariate model, after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and other factors, only experiencing coughs and headaches increased the odds of supporting a completely tobacco-free campus, up to 2.5- and 1.9-fold, respectively. Conclusions: Coughs and headaches due to other people smoking at work enhances support for a completely tobacco-free campus among non-smokers.

Ahmed Y. Musa,Abu Bakar Mohamad,Ahmed A. Al-Amiery,Lim Tien Tien 한국화학공학회 2012 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.29 No.6
The corrosion of an aluminum alloy (Al2024) and copper in 1.0M HCl solution was investigated at 30,40, 50 and 60 oC using open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) measurements. The galvanic corrosion of Al2024 and copper was studied using the zero resistance ammeter (ZRA) method. Galvanic current densities (Ig) and galvanic potential (Eg) were measured at 30 oC in 1.0M HCl solution. Thermodynamic parameters, such as activation energy (Ea), enthalpy of activation (ΔHa) and entropy of activation (ΔSa), were calculated and discussed. The results indicated that the corrosion rates of both Al2024and copper increased with temperature. The ZRA results demonstrated that Al2024 is a sacrificial anode in 1.0M HCl solution when coupled with copper.

Quantum chemical calculations were performed on ten thio compounds using semi-empirical method PM3 within program package of Material Studio 5.5. The effect of molecular structure on the corrosion inhibition efficiency was investigated using the quantum chemical calculations. The electronic properties such as highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels, (LUMO–HOMO) energy gap, dipole moment (l) and fraction of electron transfer (DN) were calculated and discussed. A relationship between the corrosion inhibition efficiency and several quantum parameters was established with coefficient correlation (R2) of 0.8894.

MADJID TORKAMAN,AZIZAN AZIZ,MOHAMAD ABU BAKAR,SULAIMAN AB GHANI 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2012 NANO Vol.7 No.4
In this work manganese dioxide (Ramsdellite-MnO2) was synthesized at room temperature using a facile electrochemical method. X-ray di®raction (XRD) was used to identify the type and the size of the crystal particle, while ¯eld emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy ¯ltered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) were used to show and identify the morphology of the particles and changes of their morphologies with the increase of reaction times. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy con¯rmed the Mn?O bond. Results from XRD showed that optimum time for synthesis Ramsdellite-MnO2 was 9 h. The results of EFTEM showed a mixture of nanospheres and nanorods after 9 h reaction time while a homogenous morphology of nanospheres was detected at 12 h reaction time. Results con¯rmed on the existence of a correlation between the reaction time and the resulting nanostructures. Moreover, the EFTEM result showed that average particle size for 12 h was (25 ? 7nm). The variation of calculated speci¯c capacitance (F/g) versus the di®erent scan rate has indicated that the e±-ciency of synthesized Ramsdellite-MnO2 nanostructures in 12 h reaction time was superior to 9 h.

Crinum asiaticum and Hymenocallis littoralis, commonly known as spider lilies are bulbous perennial and herbaceous plants that widely planted in Malaysia as ornamental. During 2015-2016, symptom of leaf blight was noticed on the hosts from several locations in Penang. The symptom appeared as irregular brown to reddish lesions surrounded by yellow halos. As the disease progressed, the infected leaves became blighted, dried, and fell off with the presence of black microsclerotia and pycnidia on the lesions parts. The present study was conducted to investigate the causal pathogen of leaf blight on C. asiaticum and H. littoralis. Based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-a) gene, the causal pathogen was identified as Macrophomina phaseolina. Phylogenetic analysis of combined dataset of ITS and TEF1-a grouped the isolates studied with other isolates of M. phaseolina from GenBank. The grouping of the isolates was supported by 96% bootstrap value. Pathogenicity test proved the role of the fungus in causing leaf blight on both hosts.
Biodegradation of Hydrocarbon Contamination by Immobilized Bacterial Cells
Raja Noor Zaliha Abd. Rahman,Farinazleen Mohamad Ghazali,Abu Bakar Salleh,Mahiran Basri 한국미생물학회 2006 The journal of microbiology Vol.44 No.3
This study examined the capacity of immobilized bacteria to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. A mixture of hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial strains was immobilized in alginate and incubated in crude oil-contaminated artificial seawater (ASW). Analysis of hydrocarbon residues following a 30-day incubation period demonstrated that the biodegradation capacity of the microorganisms was not compromised by the immobilization. Removal of n-alkanes was similar in immobilized cells and control cells. To test reusability, the immobilized bacteria were incubated for sequential increments of 30 days. No decline in biodegradation capacity of the immobilized consortium of bacterial cells was noted over its repeated use. We conclude that immobilized hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria represent a promising application in the bioremediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated areas.
Inhibition of aluminum corrosion by phthalazinone and synergistic effect of halide ion in 1.0 M HCl
Ahmed Y. Musa,Abdul Amir H. Kadhum,Abu Bakar Mohamad,Mohd Sobri Takriff,Eng Pei Chee 한국물리학회 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.1
The inhibitive effects of 1-(2H)-phthalazinone (PTO) for aluminum alloy (2024) corrosion in 1.0 M HCl solution and the synergistic effect of KI on the corrosion inhibition efficiency were assessed using electrochemical measurements. Results showed that the inhibition efficiency increased with an increase in concentration of the PTO and synergistically increased with addition of KI. Adsorption characteristic of PTO molecules in absence and presence of KI was approximated by Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models, respectively. The synergistic effect is found to decrease with increase in the concentration of PTO and a competitive inhibition mechanism exists between KI and PTO cations.
