        Development of Electrochemical Sensor for Detection of L-Tryptophan Based on Exfoliated Graphene/PEDOT:PSS

        A practical sensor based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with exfoliated graphene (GR) and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) was prepared to determine L-tryptophan (L-Trp) via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Optical microscopy was utilized to characterize the surface morphology of the composite electrode. Electrochemical behaviors of the composite electrodes were carried out via cyclic voltammetry (CV). According to DPV results, there are linear relationships between the peak currents and the concentrations in the ranges of 0.1–100 μmol L -1 and 100–1000 μmol L -1 for L-Trp, with the detection limit of 0.015 μmol L -1 for L-Trp. Moreover, the modified electrode can eliminate the interference effects of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, L-tyrosine and ascorbic acid, which exhibit excellent stability and reproducibility.

        Synergy of ionic liquid and confinement in the design of supported palladium catalyst for efficient selective hydrogenation of acetylene

        We present here a novel fabrication of highly effective supported Pd catalysts (Pd@S-1@IL) derived fromPd@S-1 core–shell material coated with ionic liquids (ILs), [Prmim][Cl], for the selective hydrogenation ofacetylene. Catalytic testing on Pd@S-1@IL catalyst illustrated a remarkable selectivity towards semihydrogenation(over 90% for ethylene, irrespective of conversion level). Moreover, no indications ofdeactivation were observed after 800 h on stream even under relatively severe conditions. Detailedcharacterization indicated that the selectivity enhancement was ascribed to thefilter effect along withelectronic effect on the adsorption/desorption processes arising from the ionic liquids layer. The stability,which has ranked the top reported values over advanced Pd-based catalysts, is attributed to theconfinement effect of Pd NPs within the supports thus restricting the migration of metals. The fabricationof core–shell architecture combined with the advantages of ionic liquid layer offers a promising guidelinefor efficient catalytic transfer of chemical resource.

        A Comparative Analysis of English and Chinese DOCs

        Chinese EFL learners often make errors in their perception of English DOCs. Accordingly, in order to examine their perceptual patterns, we have conducted a survey on English and Chinese DOCs among 50 EFL learners in China. The subjects were given three tasks. First, they were asked to turn English DOCs into Chinese ones. It is shown that three ditransitive verbs, gei 'give' (100%), tou 'steal' (6%), and mai 'buy' (48%), vary in their accuracy rate, which we attribute to their different argument structure from those corresponding to them in English. Second, they were asked to put Chinese passives into English ones. It is shown that some of them omit the indispensable preposition to in English DO passive constructions, which is due to a cross-linguistic difference between English and Chinese passives in terms of Case assignment. Third, DO passivization in the verbs, tou 'steal' and mai 'buy', shows a remarkably higher frequency rate (92%) than IO passivization. This is due to negative transfer from the Chinese language, which highly prohibits Beneficiary IOs from occurring in passive subject position. The findings of this research work suggest some teaching implications in terms of Case and argument structure of English DOCs in comparison with Chinese.

        Optimal Adaptive Multiband Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks

        In this paper, optimal sensing time allocation for adaptive multiband spectrum sensing-transmission procedure is investigated. The sensing procedure consists of an exploration phase and a detection phase. We first formulate an optimization problem to maximize the throughput by designing not only the overall sensing time, but also the sensing time for every stage in the exploration and detection phases, while keeping the miss detection probability for each channel under a pre-defined threshold. Then, we transform the initial non-convex optimization problem into a convex bilevel optimization problem to make it mathematically tractable. Simulation results show that the optimized sensing time setting in this paper can provide a significant performance gain over the previous studies.

        PET Composite Fiber Membranes Modified with Modified Nanoscale ZnO Exhibit Synergistic Antibacterial Effects

        With the global prevalence of infectious diseases, the development of antimicrobial textiles has become imperative. In this study, a synergistic antibacterial powder of IZnO–SCSB was obtained by modifying zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTS) and chitosan cinnamaldehyde Schiff base (SCSB). The powder was then mixed with a PET solution and a PET/IZnO–SCSB composite antibacterial fiber membrane was prepared using electrospinning. This composite fiber membrane demonstrates excellent mechanical properties, breathability, hydrophobicity, and antibacterial effects. The tensile strength and elongation at break were 2.4 MPa and 240.9%, respectively. When the membrane was loaded with 3 wt% of IZnO–SCSB, the antimicrobial rates against Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative (E. coli) reached 99.80% and 97.08%, respectively. Therefore, this composite antibacterial fiber membrane has broad application prospects in antibacterial textiles such as masks and medical gauze.

        RPK118, a PX Domain-containing Protein, Interacts with Peroxiredoxin-3 through Pseudo-Kinase Domains

        RPK118 is a sphingosine kinase-1-binding protein that has been implicated in sphingosine 1 phosphate-mediated signaling. It contains a PX (phox homology) domain and two pseudo-kinase domains, and co-localizes with sphingosine kinase-1 on early endosomes. In this study we identified a novel RPK118-binding protein, PRDX3 (peroxiredoxin-3), by yeast two-hybrid screening. The interaction between these proteins was confirmed by pull-down assays and co-immunoprecipitation experi-ments. Deletion studies showed that RPK118 inter-acted with PRDX3 through its pseudokinase domains, and with early endosomes through its PX domain. Dou-ble immunofluorescence experiments demonstrated that PRDX3 co-localized with RPK118 on early endosomes in COS7 cells. PRDX3 is a member of the antioxidant family of proteins synthesized in the cytoplasm and functioning in mitochondria. Our findings indicate that RPK118 is a PRDX3-binding protein that may be involved in transporting PRDX3 from the cytoplasm to its mitochondrial site of function or to other mem-brane structures via endosome trafficking
