Effect of octadecylamine concentration on adsorption on carbon steel surface
Canshuai Liu,Genxian Lin,Yun Sun,Jundong Lu,Jun Fang,Chun Yu,Lisheng Chi,Ke Sun 한국원자력학회 2020 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.52 No.10
Octadecylamine is an effective film-forming amine that protects carbon steel from corrosion. In the present study, the effect of octadecylamine concentration on adsorption on a carbon steel surface was investigated in anaerobic alkaline solution by using SEM/EDS, TEM and the Materials Studio simulation techniques. TEM morphology observation and EDS elemental detection determine the thicknesses of octadecylamine film on a carbon steel surface, which are confirmed by the in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement and resistance calculation. The Materials Studio simulation reveals the number of octadecylamine film layers at different concentrations. Results obtained in this study indicate that adsorption of octadecylamine film on carbon steel proceeds with the multi-layer adsorption mechanism.

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are enzymes which play an important role in theneutralization of toxic compounds and eradication of electrophilic carcinogens. Geneticpolymorphisms within the genes encoding for GSTs may therefore cause variations in theirenzyme activity, which may in turn influence the interindividual susceptibility to cancers. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between genetic polymorphisms ofGSTT1, GSTM1, and GSTP1 and the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) in 264 cases and 317controls in a Chinese population. Genotyping was performed by using multiplex PCR (forGSTT1 and GSTM1) and PCR-RFLP (for GSTP1) methods. The association between thepolymorphic genotypes and CRC risk was evaluated by deriving odds ratios (ORs) and 95%confidence intervals (CIs) using unconditional logistic regression analysis. Our resultsshowed that individuals with GSTT1 and GSTM1 null genotypes exhibited a higher risk ofCRC (GSTT1, OR,1.66; 95% CI, 1.20-2.31, P = 0.003; GSTM1, OR,1.57; 95% CI,1.13-2.18, P = 0.007), while no association was observed for GSTP1 (Pheterozygous = 0.790 or Pvariant= 0.261). Furthermore, individuals who simultaneously carried the null genotypes forboth GSTT1 and GSTM1 showed a stronger risk association (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.33-2.85;P < 0.001). In conclusion, the GSTT1 and GSTM1 polymorphisms, but not GSTP1, maymodulate the CRC risk among Chinese.
Contact toxicity of a new acaricide, SYP-9625, to the natural predator, Chrysopa pallens

SYP-9625 is a novel acaricide synthesized by using cyenopyrafen as lead compound. It is characterized by high acaricidal activity and low toxicity to mammals and has been widely used in Chinese farming areas. However, to date, the toxicity of SYP-9625 to natural enemy insects remained unclear. Here, we evaluated the effects of SYP-9625 on survival, growth, metamorphosis and reproduction of a common natural predator, Chrysopa pallens. Contact toxicity bioassay revealed that SYP-9625 had no significant detrimental impacts on egg hatchability, larval survival and duration, pupation rate, pupal mass, emergence rate, digestive enzyme activity, reproductive output and offspring quality, but drastically reduced adult survival rate, adult lifespan, secondary follicle size and vitellogenin (Vg) transcripts by 27.8%, 15.4%, 33.4% and 59.4%, respectively, suggesting a low contact toxicity of SYP-9625 to C. pallens. This study will strengthen the compatibility of chemical acaricide and natural enemy insects in integrated pest management.

In the post-genomic era, gene function analysis has attracted much attention. Transformation is often needed to investigate gene function. In this study, an easy, rapid, reliable, and cost-effective colony polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for screening mushroom transformants was developed: picking up a suitable amount of transformant’s tissue (1-10 lg) to 20 ll 0.25% Lywallzyme solution, and vortexing for 10 s followed by incubation at 34 ℃ for 15 min. Finally, 2 ll of the suspension was used as templates to perform PCR and single target bands were successfully amplified from respective transformants of Tremella fuciformis, Pleurotus ostreatus, and Pleurotus tuber-regium. This procedure could be widely employed for screening transformants in mushroom transformation experiments.

Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease. Recent studies have shown that chronic stress (CS) might modulate periodontal disease, but there are few models of CS-induced periodontitis, and the underlying mechanisms are unclear. The present study established a rat model of periodontitis associated with CS induced by nylon thread ligatures. The severity of periodontitis was evaluated in this model by radiographic and pathological examination. The inflammatory reaction indicated by the elevated serum levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and IL-8 was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) and glucocorticoid receptor-α (GR-α) expressions were detected by reverse transcriptase-PCR and western blotting. Open-field tests and serum corticosterone were used to evaluate CS. The results showed that CS induced behavioral changes and increased corticosterone levels of the animals with periodontitis. CS stimulation markedly increased alveolar bone loss, periodontal pocket depth and the number of plaques. It also enhanced the inflammatory reaction. These results suggest that CS accelerated the ligature-induced pathological changes associated with eriodontitis. Further analysis of the mechanisms involved showed that GR-α expression was significantly downregulated in periodontal tissues of the animals undergoing CS. Blocking GR-α signaling in lipopolysaccharide and corticosteroid-treated human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells in vitro significantly upregulated the expression of p-Akt (protein kinase B) and TLR4, promoted nuclear factor-κB activity and increased levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-8. This research suggests that CS might accelerate the pathological progression of periodontitis by a GR-α signaling-mediated inflammatory response and that this may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of periodontal disease, particularly in patients with CS.
