Liver cancer is one of leading digestive malignancies with high morbidity and mortality. There is an urgent need for the development of novel therapies for this deadly disease. It has been proven that asparagus polysaccharide, one of the most active derivates from the traditional medicine asparagus, possesses notable antitumor properties. However, little is known about the efficacy of asparagus polysaccharide as an adjuvant for liver cancer chemotherapy. Herein, we reported that asparagus polysaccharide and its embolic agent form, asparagus gum, significantly inhibited liver tumor growth with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) therapy in an orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tumor model, while significantly inhibiting angiogenesis and promoting tumor cell apoptosis. Moreover, asparagine gelatinous possessed immunomodulatory functions and showed little toxicity to the host. These results highlight the chemotherapeutic potential of asparagus polysaccharide and warrant a future focus on development as novel chemotherapeutic agent for liver cancer TACE therapy.
Thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolysis of waste mixtures of paint and tar slag
Ling Tao,Guang-Bo Zhao,Juan Qian,Yu-Kun Qin 한국화학공학회 2009 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.26 No.3
We describe thermogravimetric analyses and pyrolysis kinetic studies carried out on hazardous waste mixtures of tar slag, paint slag, paper, sodium sulfate and calcium oxide. Both thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) profiles were measured by a thermogravimetric analyzer at different final temperatures, particle sizes and heating rates. Pyrolysis kinetic parameters were calculated by the Coats-Redfern method. Influences of particle size, heating rate and final temperature on pyrolysis yields and kinetic parameters are also discussed. The results show that final temperature and particle size have a great effect on pyrolysis yields. We find that with increasing temperature the activation energy initially increases to a maximum value and then decreases.
Combustion gas and NO emission characteristics of hazardous waste mixture particles in a fixed bed
Ling Tao,Guangbo Zhao,Rui Sun 한국화학공학회 2011 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.28 No.3
Experiments with fixed-bed incinerators were carried out to model the combustion characteristics and gas emission characteristics of hazardous waste mixture particles in a grate furnace. The results indicate that combustion can be divided into three stages: ignition, main combustion and combustion completion stage. According to the various concentrations of O_2, CO-2 and CO, the main combustion stage can be subdivided into pyrolysis gas combustion and char combustion. Primary air rate, moisture and particle size have significant effects on concentrations of combustion gases and NO. Bed height has no effect on CO-2 concentrations but does have an effect on other combustion gases and NO emissions.

Poly(vinyl alcohol), whose pyrolysis carbon possesses high conductivity of 8.88 × 10−1 S/cm, was used to synthesize xLiFePO4/C·(1 − x)Li3V2(PO4)3/C cathode. It was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, conductivity, cyclic voltammetry, and galvanostatic charge and discharge experiments. Results show that LiFePO4/C and Li3V2(PO4)3/C coexists in the cathode. The particles sizes of 0.75LiFePO4/C·0.25Li3V2(PO4)3/C (x = 0.75) are much smaller than 100 nm due to the role of poly(vinyl alcohol). Its conductivity is 8.79 × 10−2 S/cm. The oxidative and reductive peaks in cyclic voltammetry are sharp and symmetrical. Their low potential gaps indicate that the extractions and insertions of lithium ion possess excellent reversibility. Its discharge capacities at 1 and 5 C are 141.1 and 100.1 mAh/g. The more Li3V2(PO4)3/C in cathode results in the deterioration of electrochemical performances due to its low theoretical capacity. It is concluded that poly(vinyl alcohol) is an effective carbon source in the preparation of xLiFePO4/C·(1 − x)Li3V2(PO4)3/C composite cathode with excellent performances.
Triptolide Inhibits Proliferation and Induces Apoptosis of Human Melanoma A375 Cells
Tao, Yue,Zhang, Meng-Li,Ma, Peng-Cheng,Sun, Jian-Fang,Zhou, Wu-Qing,Cao, Yu-Ping,Li, Ling-Jun Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.4
Triptolide, a diterpenoid obtained from Tripteryglum wilfordii Hook.f, has attracted interest for its antitumor activities against human tumor cell lines in recent years. This report focuses on anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic activities in human melanoma A375 cells assessed by CCK8 assay, Hoechst 33258 staining and flow cytometry. In addition, triptolide-induced arrest in the S phase was also observed. Caspase assays showed the apoptosis induced by triptolide was caspase-dependent and probably through intrinsic apoptotic pathways. Furthermore, expression of NF-${\kappa}B$ (p65) and its downstream factors such as Bcl-2, Bcl-$X_L$ was down-regulated. Taken together, the data indicate that triptolide inhibits A375 cells proliferation and induces apoptosis by a caspase-dependent pathway and through a NF-${\kappa}B$-mediated mechanism.

Clinical interpretation of the test results for cortisol based on continuous reference intervals with appropriate partitions improves pediatric diagnosis; however, these values are available only for Caucasians. To develop the pediatric reference intervals for Chinese population, we examined the serum cortisol levels in 1,143 healthy Chinese children aged 4–18 years (566 boys and 577 girls), using an IMMULITE 2000 Immunoassay System (Siemens Healthcare GmbH). Phlebotomy was performed at 7–9 a.m. for 284 boys and 287 girls and at 1–3 p.m. for the others. They were divided into four age groups according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guideline EP28-A3c, with the last group further stratified according to sampling time. Separate reference intervals of 49.6–323.7, 70.9–395.3, and 90.1–448.7 nmol/L were established for children aged 4–8, 9–12, and 13–15 years, respectively. Further, reference intervals of 118.2–464.7 and 71.4–446.7 nmol/L were established for morning and afternoon cortisol levels, respectively, in children aged 16–18 years. Further studies are necessary to transfer and validate these reference intervals in other analytical systems and pediatric populations, and to allow for broader applications.
A Novel In Situ Gel Formulation of Ranitidine for Oral Sustained Delivery
( Tao Ma ),( Hao Ping Xu ),( Min Shi ),( Jin Ling Jiang ) 한국응용약물학회 2014 Biomolecules & Therapeutics(구 응용약물학회지) Vol.22 No.2
The main purpose of this study was to develop a novel, in situ gel system for sustained delivery of ranitidine hydrochloride. Ranitidinein situ gels at 0.2%, 0.5%, and 1.0% gellan gum concentration (w/v) were prepared, respectively, and characterized in termsof preparation, viscosity and in vitro release. The viscosity of the gellan gum formulations in solution increased with increasingconcentrations of gellan gum. In vitro study showed that the release of ranitidine from these gels was characterized by an initialphase of high release (burst effect) and translated to the second phase of moderate release. Single photon emission computingtomography technique was used to evaluate the stomach residence time of gel containing 99mTc tracer. The animal experimentsuggested in situ gel had feasibility of forming gels in stomach and sustained the ranitidine release from the gels over the periodof at least 8 h. In conclusion, the in situ gel system is a promising approach for the oral delivery of ranitidine for the therapeuticeffects improvement.

Purpose: Curcumin exerts its anti-cancer effects, partly by targeting special microRNAs, in human cancers. MiR-21 is a key oncomirin carcinogenesis of multiple human cancers. Here, we aimed to further explore the mechanistic insight into the link betweencurcumin and miR-21 on diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Materials and Methods: Quantitative real-time PCR assays were performed to assess the levels of miR-21 and Von Hippel-Lindau(VHL) mRNA. In situ hybridization assay was used for miR-21 expression visualization in lymphoma tissues. Western blot was usedfor determination of VHL protein, Ki-67, caspase-3, and cleaved caspase-3 levels. Dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitationassay were employed to confirm the direct target of miR-21. MTT assay, flow cytometric analysis, and transwell assaywere used to evaluate cell proliferation, apoptosis, and migration and invasion capacities, respectively. Results: Curcumin repressed the proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities and promoted apoptosis in SU-DHL-8 cells. Curcumininhibited miR-21 expression and curcumin exerted its anti-proliferation, anti-migration, anti-invasion, and pro-apoptosiseffects by miR-21 in SU-DHL-8 cells. VHL was a direct target of miR-21. Moreover, curcumin exerted its regulatory effects on SUDHL-8 cells by VHL. Conclusion: Curcumin exerted its anti-proliferation, anti-migration, anti-invasion, and pro-apoptosis functions, at least partly, byrepressing miR-21 and regulating VHL expression in DLBCL cell line. Our findings provided a possible molecular mechanism ofcurcumin-mediated anti-cancer effect.
