        Student talk in large-size mathematics classrooms: a case study of a sequence of ten consecutive lessons in China

        This study aims to reveal features of student talk over a sequence of consecutive mathematics lessons in a large-size class in mainland China. By examining the time allocation for student talk and the number of Chinese characters spoken by the students, this study finds that, in some of the lessons observed, student talk added up to a longer duration and included a larger number of Chinese characters than teacher talk. But individual students were observed to have unequal opportunities to participate in public talk and there is a large gap regarding the number of Chinese characters that an individual student could speak in public. Each individual student’s accountability to talk was recorded to be less diverse in public presentation than in non-presentation contexts (e.g., answering teacher questions). This study suggests that a unit of consecutive lessons can help a clearer and more comprehensive observation and analysis of student talk.

Research achievements of this article provides a useful reference to optimize visual data mining techniques.

        Equivalent homogenization design method for stretching-bending hybrid lattice structures

        An efficient and accurate equivalent design method for hybrid lattice structures is proposed. First, the equivalent mechanical properties of the lattice structures are calculated, including the equivalent elastic modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson’s ratio. We construct an effective and simple stretching-bending hybrid lattice structure, which uses two types of lattice structures: stretching-dominated lattice structure and bending-dominated lattice structure. The optimal material density distributions are obtained via topological optimization by taking threepoint bending beams and L-shaped beams as examples. The optimized stretching-bending hybrid lattice structures are designed based on the equivalent properties of the lattice structures. The same relative density uniform lattice structure is constructed while being compared with the stretching-bending hybrid lattice structure. The corresponding equivalent homogenization model and accurate beam model are established for comparison and verification by finite element analysis. Results show that the hybrid lattice structure has higher stiffness than the uniform lattice structure with the same relative density. The equivalent homogenized model of a hybrid lattice structure can effectively characterize the mechanical properties of the structure and improve design efficiency.

        P-hydroxybenzoic acid positively affect the Fusarium oxysporum to stimulate root rot in Panax notoginseng

        Background: Plant health is directly related to the change in native microbial diversity and changes in soil health have been implicated as one of the main cause of root rot. However, scarce information is present regarding allelopathic relationship of Panax notoginseng root exudates and pathogenic fungi Fusarium oxysporum in a continuous cropping system. Methods: We analyzed P. notoginseng root exudate in the planting soil for three successive years to determine phenolic acid concentration using GC-MS and HPLC followed by effect on the microbial community assembly. Antioxidant enzymes were checked in the roots to confirm possible resistance in P. notoginseng. Results: Total 29 allelochemicals in the planting soil extract was found with highest concentration (10.54 %) of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The HPLC showing a year-by-year decrease in p-hydroxybenzoic acid content in soil of different planting years, and an increase in population of F. oxysporum. Moreover, community analysis displayed negative correlation with 2.22 mmol. L<sup>-1</sup> of p-hydroxybenzoic acid correspond to an 18.1 % population of F. oxysporum. Furthermore, in vitro plate assay indicates that medium dose of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (2.5-5 mmol. L<sup>-1</sup>) can stimulate the growth of F. oxysporum colonies and the production of macroconidia, as well as cell wall-degrading enzymes. We found that 2-3 mmol. L<sup>-1</sup> of p-hydroxybenzoic acid significantly increased the population of F. oxysporum. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study suggested that p-hydroxybenzoic acid have negative effect on the root system and modified the rhizosphere microbiome so that the host plant became more susceptible to root rot disease.
