Estrategia Clientelar de Compra de Voto y Niveles de Marginación
Leonardo A. Gatica Arreola,Cristina Tapia Muro 한국라틴아메리카학회 2017 라틴아메리카연구 Vol.30 No.4
The analysis focuses on the effect of voter poverty levels (measured through approximation by the level of marginality of the area where they live), in relation to the probability of receiving an offer from a broker or political party in the manner of a clientelistic exchange (the trade of votes for goods or other favors). The association is usually an important assumption in research about clientelism and in its theoretical approaches, however, it has been scarcely studied empirically. The analysis was carried out using a post-electoral survey in a municipality of the urban area of Jalisco, Mexico. The results support the assertion that marginalization level is an important predictor of the clientelistic supply.

This paper analyzes the life cycle behavior of household’s labor income in Mexico, and its differences across income deciles, using the data from the 2018 National Survey of Household Income and Expenditures (ENIGH) in Mexico. Our results show that, controlling for education, salary grows faster for households within the higher deciles compared to those in the lower ones. Households in the higher deciles also have longer periods of income growth. The results suggest that even with similar education levels, salary inequality prevails, which is probably due to inequality of opportunities for the different social groups.

Pequeños Negocios y Percepción Educativa
Leonardo A. Gatica Arreola,Maria del Rosario Ruiz Hernand,Semei Coronado Ramirez 한국라틴아메리카학회 2015 라틴아메리카연구 Vol.28 No.3
This paper reports the results of a study on the perception of education returns among the residents of a poor urban neighborhood in Jalisco, Mexico. We found that household heads have a lower expectation of education returns when the household head is a small business owner, controlling for the parents’ education level and gender, income and household socio-demographic characteristics. Parents who own a small business report that they are more likely to let their children drop out school. This fact is important to be considered when microcredit policy is designed and implemented for the creation of small businesses.

Political Economy and Its Application in Latin America: A Review
Claudio A. Bonilla,Juan Pablo Couyoumdjian,Leonardo A. Gatica 한국라틴아메리카학회 2012 라틴아메리카연구 Vol.25 No.4
This article reviews some contributions of two important research areas in political economy which were developed mainly in the US and Europe. Our purpose is to examine some applications of these theories in Latin American countries. Since the complex relationship between economics and politics becomes all the more complicated when the institutional setting does not provide political stability, it is interesting to study if the political economy models developed in the first world are also applicable to Latin America. We conclude that in great part the models developed are consistent with the empirical findings in Latin America. However, much work still has to be done and special consideration must be given to the institutional features of the Latin American countries.

In this paper we apply a frequency-dominant test of time reversibility, the REVERSE test based on the bispectrum, to explore the high-order spectrum properties of the Mexican exchange rate reversible process. The results show that the series is time irreversible and therefore it does not comply with the property of i.i.d. The result implies that this kind of series cannot be analyzed with GARCH models, since this could have led to wrong economic policies.
