<P>We present the detection of a large population of ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) in two massive galaxy clusters, Abell S1063 at z = 0.348 and Abell 2744 at z = 0.308, based on F814W and F105W images in the Hubble Frontier Fields Program. We find 47 and 40 UDGs in Abell S1063 and Abell 2744, respectively. Color-magnitude diagrams of the UDGs show that they are mostly located at the faint end of the red sequence. From the comparison with simple stellar population models, we estimate their stellar mass to range from 10(8) to 10(9) M circle dot. Radial number density profiles of the UDGs show a turnover or a flattening in the central region at r < 100 kpc. We estimate the total masses of the UDGs using the galaxy scaling relations. A majority of the UDGs have total masses M-200 = 10(10) -10(11) M circle dot, and only a few of them have total masses M-200 = 10(11) -10(12) M circle dot. The total number of UDGs within the virial radius is estimated to be N(UDG) = 770 +/- 114 for Abell S1063 and N(UDG) = 814 +/- 122 for Abell 2744. Combining these results with data in the literature, we fit the relation between the total numbers of UDGs and the masses of their host systems for M-200 > 10(13) M circle dot with a power law, N(UDG) = M-200(1.05 +/- 0.09). These results suggest that a majority of the UDGs have a dwarf galaxy origin, while only a small number of the UDGs are massive L* galaxies that failed to form a normal population of stars.</P>

The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of 37 bp insertion/deletion (I/O) poly-morphism of the low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-associated protein 1 (LRPAP1) gene on anthropometrical or biochemical parameters in korean general population. To determine the frequency of the genotype, we analyzed 244 samples of Korean origin. The frequency of the I allele was 0.55 in men and 0.56 in women, which were significantly higher than the frequency (0.26) that was reported in Czech population of Caucasian origin. In addition, the I allele of this polymorphism was significantly associated with higher value of body mass index (BMI) in our subjects by ANOVA test (P<0.05), and this association was maintained after controlling for age and gender by ANCOVA test (P<0.05). Thus, our results suggest that the I/O polymorphism of the LRPAP1 gene may be useful as a genetic marker for obesity in Korean general population.
Bioequivalence of Cholicerin Soft Capsule to Gliatilin Soft Capsule (Choline Alphoscerate 400 mg)

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the bioequivalence of two choline alphoscerate soft capsules, Gliatilin soft capsule (Daewoong Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd.) and Cholicerin soft capsule (Sam Chun Dang Pharm. Co., Ltd.), according to the guidelines of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). Serum concentrations of choline after oral administration of choline alphoscerate were determined using a validated LC/MS/MS method. This method showed linear response over the concentration range of 0.5-20 ${\mu}g$/mL with correlation coefficient of 0.9999. The lower limit of quantitation using 100 ${\mu}L$ of serum was 0.5 ${\mu}g$/mL which was sensitive enough for pharmacokinetic studies. Thirty six healthy male Korean volunteers received each medicine at the choline alphoscerate dose of 1200 mg in a $2{\times}2$ crossover study. There was a one-week washout period between the doses. Blood samples were taken at predetermined time intervals up to 8 hr. $AUC_t$ (the area under the serum concentration-time curve from time 0 to 8 hr) was calculated by the linear trapezoidal rule method. $C_{max}$ (the maximum serum drug concentration) and $T_{max}$ (the time to reach $C_{max}$) were compiled from the serum concentration-time data. Analysis of variance was carried out using logarithmically transformed $AUC_t$ and $C_{max}$. No significant sequence effect was found for all of the bioavailability parameters, indicating that the crossover design was properly performed. The 90% confidence intervals of the $AUC_t$ ratio and the $C_{max}$ ratio for Cholicerin/Gliatilin were log0.9998-log1.1172 and log0.9938-1.0944, respectively. These values were within the acceptable bioequivalence intervals of log0.80-log1.25. Thus, the criteria of the KFDA guidelines for the bioequivalence was satisfied, indicating Cholicerin soft capsule and Gliatilin soft capsule are bioequivalent.

PC-9S (N-Ethanol-2-mirystyl-3-oxo-stearamide) is a synthetic ceramide and has been known to be effective in atopic and psoriatic patients. K112PC-5 (2-Acetyl-N-(1,3-dihydroxyisopropyl)-tetradecanamide) is a novel ceramide derivative of PC-9S. In the present study, we examined the effect of K112PC-5 on macrophage and T lymphocyte function in primary macrophages and splenocytes, respectively, as well as the effect of topical application of K112PC-5 on skin inflammation and atopic dermatitis (AD) in mouse models. K112PC-5 inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced nitrite generation in mouse peritoneal macrophages in a dose-dependent manner. However, K112PC-5 did not affect concanavalin A-induced proliferation, interleukin (IL)-2 secretion and IL-4 secretion in mouse splenocytes. In addition, K112PC-5 significantly suppressed the increase in phorbol ester-induced ear thickness in BALB/c mice. Further study demonstrated that topical application of K112PC-5 also inhibited AD induced by extracts of dust mites, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae, in NC/Nga mice. Taken together, these results showed that K112PC-5 exerted an anti-inflammatory effect both in vitro and in vivo and proved to be beneficial in an animal model of AD. Our results suggest that K112PC-5 might be beneficial as a topical agent for the treatment of AD.

This study was designed to examine the effects of sports climbing club activity on physical fitness, falling injury-related variables, and cardiovascular function in middle-aged women. Physical fitness, isokinetic function of ankle, static and dynamic balance, and cardiovascular function were measured in 14 sports climbing cllub participants (SC) and 13 general individuals (GEN). Main results obtained by comparing all variables between SC and GEN were as follows: 1) Left and right first finger joint-grip strength, left general grip strength, back strength, push up, and side step were significantly higher in SC than GEN. 2) Most variables regarding isokinetic strength and endurance for plantar flexion were significantly higher in SC than GEN, whereas no significant differences were found in isokinetic strength and endurance for dorsiflexion between SC and GEN. 3) Sways for static and dynamic balance test were significantly lower in SC than GEN. 4) Regarding cardiovascular function, SC showed significantly higher VO₂max than GEN. DBP and most variables regarding vascular elasticity tended to be better in SC than GEN. It was concluded that physical fitness, falling injury-related variables, and cardiovascular function were improved by sport climbing club activity, indicating that sport climbing would be beneficial for health promotion in middle-aged women.
