      • Planning 0-Energy Cities Using Local Energy Sources

Leduc, Wouter Sustainable Building Research Center 2011 International journal of sustainable building tech Vol.2 No.3

The world is urbanizing rapidly and urban resources demand is increasing. Cities depend highly on foreign fossil energy sources. Incoming resources are used inefficiently, only part of energy input is used and remaining is wasted. To reduce dependency and increase self-sufficiency, cities have to search for local and renewable energy sources. Cities are a reservoir of untapped energy sources. Cities can support themselves to reach 0-energy status and to become independent. Cities have unused space available to capture incoming energy. Several technologies are available, but not widely implemented. Therefore, further effort should focus on planning and implementing those technologies. And urban planning should support resources management. Proposed method, based on Urban Harvest concept and exergy principle, towards planning 0-energy cities, consists of five steps. It gives an overview of urban energy demand and potential supply, and describes how supply and demand can be coupled effectively.

      • Urban Harvest + Approach for 0-impact Built Environments, Case Kerkrade West

Rovers, Ronald,Rovers, Vera,Leduc, Wouter,Gommans, Leo,Sap, Herwin,Van Kann, Ferry Sustainable Building Research Center 2011 International journal of sustainable building tech Vol.2 No.2

The need to restructure our society into a sustainable society has been recognised by many, though a clear direction and ambition in this process usually fails. At the Research Institute for the Built Environment of Tomorrow, RiBuilT, the definition of a sustainable society has been summarised as the 'Concept of O': O for a circular approach of resource management, and 0 (zero) for 0-impacts of our activities; 0-energy, 0-materials, 0-water, 0-landuse and 0-air (pollution). In order to apply this approach to existing urban environments, the Urban Harvestplus approach was developed. This paper will analyse the first test results of the actual implementation of this approach on the Dutch district of Kerkrade West. The pilot on Kerkrade West shows that even when the production of resources is maximised and the demand for them will be drastically reduced, it will still be hard to achieve the 0-impact state. We need new and more innovative solutions to actually make it happen. However, the Urban Harvestplus approach proved to be a straight forward approach in getting closer to the zero-impact situation. It also clarified the interaction between resources and made clear that resource cycles should never be considered on their own, but always in relation to each other to avoid sub-optimisation. Many questions and areas are left for further research, but we believe Urban Harvest-plus represents a strong basis to depart from.

Suitable and optimal locations for implementing photovoltaic water pumping systems for grassland irrigation in China

        Campana, P.E.,Leduc, S.,Kim, M.,Olsson, A.,Zhang, J.,Liu, J.,Kraxner, F.,McCallum, I.,Li, H.,Yan, J. ELSEVIER 2017 APPLIED ENERGY -BARKING THEN OXFORD- Vol.185 No.2

<P>The results indicate that the photovoltaic water pumping systems provide high potential for improving forage productivity, contributing to meet the local demand. The optimal areas are highly sensitive to several environmental and economic parameters such as increased forage potential yield, forage management costs, forage water requirements, ground water depth, forage price and CO2 price. Most of the optimal areas are selected when the market forage price ranges from 300 to 500 $/tonne DM, indicating that the forage produced using PVWP technology for irrigation is already competitive compared to the imported forage. Long-Term Effectiveness and Safety of Dutasteride versus Finasteride in Patients with Male Androgenic Alopecia in South Korea: A Multicentre Chart Review Study

2022 Annals of Dermatology Vol.34 No.5

Background: Dutasteride improves hair growth compared with finasteride in maleandrogenic alopecia (AGA) and is well tolerated. However, real-world evidence for longtermdutasteride use in AGA is lacking. Objective: To describe baseline characteristics, treatment patterns and long-term safety andeffectiveness of dutasteride versus finasteride. Methods: This was a multicentre, retrospective medical chart review study conductedin South Korea. The index date was the first prescription of dutasteride or finasteride. Baseline characteristics were assessed 6 months prior to index. Safety and effectiveness(improvements in basic and specific [BASP] classification) data were collected from indexthroughout the observation period. Results: Overall, 600 male adult patients were included (dutasteride, n=295; finasteride,n=305). Dutasteride-treated patients were older (p<0.001) and more likely to have moderate/severe BASP classification at baseline (p=0.010) compared with finasteride-treated patients. Among patients treated with recommended, on-label dosing exclusively (n=535: dutasteride,n=250; finasteride, n=285), dutasteride-treated patients showed greater improvementin hair growth than finasteride-treated patients, as measured by the BASP basic M classification(adjusted incidence rate ratio [95% confidence interval]: 2.06 [1.08, 3.95]; p=0.029). Among this same subset, overall occurrence of adverse events (AEs) during the observationperiod were not statistically equivalent between groups (dutasteride 7.6%, finasteride 10.5%;p=0.201), although reports of AEs of special interest were equivalent (p<0.001). Conclusion: Dutasteride showed greater effectiveness than finasteride in improving BASP classificationin treating male AGA and had a similar or possibly lower occurrence of overall AEs. Dutasteride may provide an effective and safe treatment option for male patients with AGA.
