Casting off Soviet chains? Conditions for the Ideological Renewal of Communist Successor Parties in Russia, Ukraine and Moldova since the 2010s

Lassila Jussi,Nizhnikau Ryhor 한양대학교 아태지역연구센터 2023 Journal of Eurasian Studies Vol.14 No.1

This article studies the political developments of Communist successor parties (CSPs) in Russia, Ukraine and Moldova since the 2010s to identify conditions for their ideological renewal. We find that embeddedness in the patronalist systems is a major impeding factor to ideological renewal and the removal of patronal shackles and governmental responsibility are its key drivers. In terms of the prospects of Russiaʼs communist party, an unreformed CSP may win elections but the actual ideological renewal begins while in power, as the case of Moldova shows. At the same time, the interdependence between the access to power and ideological renewal resembles a vicious circle. While a clientilistic status disincentivizes the real competition for power, the access to power becomes a nearly impossible task until the system collapses. As the example of the Ukrainian communists show, the danger is that the systemic collapse may also bring down its clients as well.

Color stability of thermochromic pigment in maxillofacial silicone

Kantola, Rosita,Lassila, Lippo V.J.,Tolvanen, Mimmi,Valittu, Pekka K. The Korean Academy of Prosthodonitics 2013 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.5 No.2

PURPOSE. Maxillofacial silicone elastomer is usually colored intrinsically with color pigments to match skin colors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the color stability of a maxillofacial silicone elastomer, colored with a thermochromic, color changing pigment. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disc-shaped maxillofacial silicone specimens were prepared and divided into 3 groups: a conventionally colored control group, one group additionally colored with 0.2 wt% thermochromic pigment, and one group with 0.6 wt% thermochromic pigment. Half of the surface of each specimen was covered with an aluminium foil. All of the specimens were exposed to UV radiation in 6 hour cycles over 46 days. In between the UV exposures, half of the specimens were stored in darkness, at room temperature, and the other half was stored in an incubator, at a humidity of 97% and a temperature of $+37^{\circ}C$. Color measurements were made with a spectrophotometer and registered according to the CIELAB $L^*a^*b^*$ color model system. The changes in $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values during artificial aging were statistically analyzed by using paired samples t-test and repeated measures ANOVA. P-values <.05 were considered as statistically significant. RESULTS. The UV exposure resulted in visually noticeable and statistically significant color changes in the $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values in both of the test groups containing thermochromic pigment. Storage in the incubator lead to statistically significant color changes in the $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of the specimens containing thermochromic pigment, compared to those stored at room temperature. CONCLUSION. The specimens containing thermochromic pigment were very sensitive to UV radiation, and the thermochromic pigment is not suitable, as such, to be used in maxillofacial prostheses.

      • Context Representation and Reasoning in Pervasive Computing : a Review

Mikko Perttunen,Jukka Riekki,Ora Lassila 보안공학연구지원센터 2009 International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Vol.4 No.4

Context-awareness has been recognized as an important enabler for pervasive computing. Our aim is to provide a thorough survey of the state of the art in context representation and reasoning in the field of pervasive and context-aware computing. The review is organized in sections according to the knowledge representation techniques applied in the work included in the survey and an overview of the requirements for context representation is provided. We conclude the paper with a discussion of a number of identified limitations in the current solutions and point out opportunities for further research.

Comparative color and surface parameters of current esthetic restorative CAD/CAM materials

Egilmez, Ferhan,Ergun, Gulfem,Cekic-Nagas, Isil,Vallittu, Pekka Kalevi,Lassila, Lippo Veli Juhana The Korean Academy of Prosthodonitics 2018 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.10 No.1

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to derive and compare the inherent color (hue angle, chroma), translucency ($TP_{SCI}$), surface gloss (${\Delta}E^*_{SCE-SCI}$), and surface roughness ($R_a$) amongst selected shades and brands of three hybrid CAD/CAM blocks [GC Cerasmart (CS); Lava Ultimate (LU); Vita Enamic (VE)]. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The specimens (N = 225) were prepared into square-shaped ($12{\times}12mm^2$) with different thicknesses and shades. The measurements of color, translucency, and surface gloss were performed by a reflection spectrophotometer. The surface roughness and surface topography were assessed by white light interferometry. RESULTS. Results revealed that hue and chroma values were influenced by the material type, material shade, and material thickness (P < .001). The order of hue angle amongst the materials was LU > CS > VE, whereas the order of chroma was VE > CS > LU. $TP_{SCI}$ results demonstrated a significant difference in terms of material types and material thicknesses ($P{\leq}.001$). $TP_{SCI}$ values of the tested materials were ordered as LU > CS > VE. ${\Delta}E^*_{SCE-SCI}$ and $R_a$ results were significantly varied amongst the materials (P < .001) and amongst the shades (P < .05). The order of ${\Delta}E^*_{SCE-SCI}$ amongst the materials were as follows $LU>VE{\geq}CS$, whereas the order of $R_a$ was $CS{\geq}VE>LU$. CONCLUSION. Nano-ceramic and polymer-infiltrated-feldspathic ceramic-network CAD/CAM materials exhibited different optical, inherent color and surface parameters.
