Determination of pH of book papers and paper-based records is often required to monitor their conditions and/or the effect of conservation treatments. Since sampling for pH measurement is not generally allowed for real paper objects, pH indicators can be applied to paper collections, depending on the purpose of the measurement and the value of the collections. Despite pH indicators are easy, convenient, and inexpensive to use, leaving a stain after the test limits their application. In this paper, six types of pH indicators were tested utilizing to eight different papers, of which pH range is around 4 to 9. The original application methods of three of the pH indicators were modified in order to diminish the intensity of their stains as well as to apply without taking samples. As their performance and color change of paper by their residual stain were evaluated, we could identify features of each pH indicator and narrow down two to three pH indicators that can be relatively more useful depending on the purpose of pH measurement.
