        Korean and Chinese Consumers’ Perception on Herbal Cosmetics: Clustering of Unstructured data

        목적: 본 연구는 자연주의 화장품에 대한 수요가 증가하는 시점에 한국과 중국 소비자를 대상으로 한방화장품에 대한 인식을 살펴 보고 비교하고자 하였다. 방법: 빅데이터 방법론을 바탕으로 텍스트 마이닝과 의미 네트워크 분석을 사용하여 한방화장품 관련 리 뷰에 나타난 주요 키워드를 알아보았다. 클러스터링 분석을 통해 감정별로 소비자의 한방화장품에 대한 인식을 분석하고 군집화 하 여 비교하였다. 결과: 한국 소비자는 화장품 유통과정과 포장상태에 대해 더 중요시하였으며, 한방화장품을 연령대가 높은 여성의 화장품으로 인식하였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 중국 소비자는 한방화장품의 원재료 등을 비롯한 제품 속성을 더 많이 중시하였으며, 한방화장품에 대한 타인의 평가를 중요한 요소로 인지하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 결론: 한방화장품의 시장 규모가 확대됨에 따라 더 욱 다양해지고 젊어진 소비자층을 공략하기 위한 마케팅 전략을 수립하는 데에 도움이 되고자 하며, 보다 효과적인 마케팅 전략 수 립에 활용할 수 있는 기초자료를 제공하고자 한다. Purpose: This study examines and compares Korean and Chinese consumers’ perceptions of herbal cosmetics, as demand for natural cosmetics is increasing. Methods: Based on a big data methodology, this study uses text mining and semantic network analysis to identify major keywords that appeared in consumers’ comments on herbal cosmetics. Results: Results reveal that Korean consumers paid more attention to herbal cosmetics products’ distribution process and packaging conditions. Moreover, Korean consumers recognize herbal cosmetics as cosmetics for women of higher age. Chinese consumers focused more on the products’ attributes, including other people’s evaluations of the products and the ingredients of herbal cosmetics. Conclusion: As the market size of Korean herbal cosmetics expands, this study will help establish marketing strategies to target a wider consumer base and to provide basic data for establishing more effective marketing strategies when Korean herbal cosmetics brands enter the Chinese market.

      • Comorbidity Relationship to Outcome of Radical Cystectomy in Chinese: a Single Institution Study with the ACE-27 Comorbidity Index

        To determine the relationship between comorbidity and outcome after radical cystectomy in Chinese patients by using the Adult Comorbidity Evaluation (ACE)-27 index. Two-hundred-and-forty-six patients treated with radical cystectomy at the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Hunan Province, China between 2000 and 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. Medical records were reviewed for age, gender, delayed time of radical cystectomy, urinary diversion type, pelvic lymphadenectomy status, TNM stage, and pathological grade. Comorbidity information was assessed by the ACE-27 index. The outcome measurement was overall survival. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to determine the association between comorbidity and outcome. The study population consisted of 215 (87.40%) males and 31 (12.60%) females with a mean age of $62{\pm}11$ years. Median duration of follow-up was $47{\pm}31$ months. A total of 151 (61.38%) patents died during follow-up. Of those, 118 (47.97%) had at least one comorbidity. According to the ACE-27 scores, 128 (52.03%) patients had no comorbidity, 79 (32.11%) had mild, 33 (13.41%) had moderate, and 6 (2.45%) had severe comorbidities. Multivariate analysis indicated that moderate (p=0.002) and severe (p<0.001) comorbidity was significantly associated with decreased overall survival. In addition, age ${\geq}70$ years (p=0.002), delayed time of radical cystectomy >12 weeks (p=0.044), pelvic lymphadenectomy status (p=0.014), and TNM stage >T3 (p<0.001) were determined to be independent risk factors of overall survival. Increasing severity of comorbidity statistically correlated with decreased overall survival after radical cystectomy.

        Photonic Generation of Frequency-tripling Vector Signal Based on Balanced Detection without Precoding or Optical Filter

        A novel approach for frequency-tripling vector signal generation via balanced detection without precoding and optical filter is proposed. The scheme is mainly utilizing an integrated dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DPQPSK) modulator. In the DPQPSK modulator, one QPSK modulator is driven by an RF signal to generate high-order optical sidebands, while the other QPSK modulator is modulated by I/Q data streams to produce baseband vector signal as an optical carrier. After that, a frequency-tripling 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16QAM) vector millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal can be obtained by balanced detection. The proposed scheme can reduce the complexity of transmitter digital signal processing. The results show that, a 4 Gbaud baseband 16QAM vector signal can be generated at 30 GHz by frequency-tripling. After 10 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission, the constellation and eye diagrams of the generated vector signal perform well and a bit-error-rate (BER) below than 1e-3 can be achieved.

        Collision-avoidance trajectory planning for a virtual kinesthetic feedback system

        This paper proposes the collision-avoidance trajectory design and simulation of a virtual kinesthetic feedback system. The system has two sliders driven in two tracks, respectively, and produces virtual masses when the user holds and moves the system. Trajectory planning considering both the ideal and constrained scenarios in applications is carried out. A collision-avoidance trajectory is designed based on the quintic polynomial, and the influence of the time interval and the switching point is discussed. Simulations were performed to verify the function of the system. The results show that without constraints, the system can produce prescribed virtual masses. The displacements of the slider are affected by the error between the prescribed virtual mass and the real mass of the system. With the constraints of the tracks' lengths, the produced virtual masses are altered from the prescribed. Adjusting the time interval and the switching point could optimize the performance of the system when the geometric parameters of the system are set.

        Phenolic composition and neuroprotective effects of the ethyl-acetate fraction from Inonotus sanghuang against H2O2-induced apoptotic cell death of primary cortical neuronal cells

        The study aimed to characterize phenolic compounds of the Inonotus sanghuang’s ethyl-acetate fraction (EAF) and assess the neuroprotective effect of EAF using the H2O2-treated primary cortical neuronal cells (PCNC) model. Using HPLC-ECD, 5 phenolics were identified and quantified from EAF. H2O2-treated PCNC experiments in vitro showed that pretreatment with EAF increased the GSH-PX and SOD activities and reduced the NO, MDA, and Aβ contents. Furthermore, EAF suppressed the production of IL-1β, IFN-γ, IL-6, and TNF-α in H2O2-treated PCNC. Other mechanisms found that EAF reduced Bax, caspase 9, and caspase 3 expressions at the mRNA and protein levels while increasing Bcl-2 expression at the mRNA and protein levels. These results showed that EAF could serve as potential agents for anti-NDD.

        Lactate exacerbates lung damage induced by nanomicroplastic through the gut microbiota–HIF1a/PTBP1 pathway

        Exposure to nanomicroplastics (nano-MPs) can induce lung damage. The gut microbiota is a critical modulator of the gut–lung axis. However, the mechanisms underlying these interactions have not been elucidated. This study explored the role of lactate, a key metabolite of the microbiota, in the development of lung damage induced by nano-MPs (LDMP). After 28 days of exposure to nano-MPs (50–100 nm), mice mainly exhibited damage to the lungs and intestinal mucosa and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Lactate accumulation was observed in the lungs, intestines and serum and was strongly associated with the imbalance in lactic acid bacteria in the gut. Furthermore, no lactate accumulation was observed in germ-free mice, while the depletion of the gut microbiota using a cocktail of antibiotics produced similar results, suggesting that lactate accumulation in the lungs may have been due to changes in the gut microbiota components. Mechanistically, elevated lactate triggers activation of the HIF1a/PTBP1 pathway, exacerbating nano-MP-induced lung damage through modulation of the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). Conversely, mice with conditional knockout of Ptbp1 in the lungs (Ptbp1flfl) and PTBP1-knockout (PTBP1-KO) human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells showed reversal of the effects of lactate through modulation of the HIF1a/PTBP1 signaling pathway. These findings indicate that lactate is a potential target for preventing and treating LDMP.

        Synthesis, and antioxidant, thrombin-inhibitory, and anticancer activities of hydroxybenzamide derivatives

        Four hydroxybenzamide derivatives were synthesized from protocatechuic acid. The antioxidant activities of these derivatives were evaluated in vitro using DPPH radical scavenging and reducing power assays. In addition, these compounds were subjected to a chromogenic thrombin-inhibitory assay using Chromozym-TH as the substrate. The anticancer effects of these derivatives were also investigated using the MTT assay in three human cancer cell lines. Four derivatives exhibited excellent DPPH radical scavenging activity and redox potential. Their highly inhibitory effect against thrombin may allow them to be utilized as novel micromolecule thrombin inhibitors. Furthermore, four derivatives demonstrated different inhibitory activities in three human cancer cell lines but showed minimal harmful effects on normal HUVEC cells. Therefore, hydroxybenzamide derivatives indicate the superior antioxidant, thrombin-inhibitory, and anticancer activities along with the excellent biocompatibility, which have the potential application in therapeutic interventions and disease prevention of cancer, thrombotic diseases, and aging.

        Non-nano 막대형 산화아연의 특성 및 자외선 차단용 화장품에의 응용

        전 세계적으로 자외선 차단제의 유효성 및 안전성에 대한 관심이 증가함에 따라 새로운 무기 자외선 차단제 개발에 대한 연구도 활기를 띄고 있다. 본 연구에서는 최근에 이슈화된 나노물질규제에 대응 가능한 나노 사이즈가 아닌 non-nano 막대형 산화아연을 합성하였고, 이를 세틸알코올로 표면처리한 막대형 산화아연분체를 개발하여 물리적 특성을 조사하였으며 자외선 차단제로서의 응용가능성을 평가하였다. 실험 결과, non-nano인 막대형 산화아연 분체를 적용한 선크림의 자외선 차단 효능과 백탁 정도는 40 nm 크기의 산화아연과 비슷한 결과를 나타냈으며, 막대형 산화아연 분산액을 사용한 선크림은 자외선 차단효능이 현저히 증가함을 확인하였다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 개발된 막대형 산화아연 분체는 non-nano (200 nm)임에도 불구하고 투명성(백탁 개선), 자외선 차단 효능 그리고 사용감 측면에서 우수한 자외선 차단제로서 응용 가능성이 있음을 시사하였다. With increasing interest in the effectiveness and safety of sunscreen worldwide, research on the development of new inorganic sunscreen is also gaining momentum. In the present study, non-nano sized needle type zinc oxide, which can meet the regulation of nano-material as a recent problem, has been synthesized and surface-modified with cetyl alcohol to obtain needle type zinc oxide powder. Here, we also investigated their physical properties and evaluated their potential application as sunscreens. As a result of the experiment, the sunscreen with needle type zinc oxide powder, which was non-nano, showed similar UV-protection properties and transparency compare to that of 40nm size zinc oxide. It was further confirmed that the UV blocking effect was significantly increased when the needle type zinc oxide dispersion was applied to the sunscreen. Therefore, although the needle type zinc oxide is non-nano (200 nm) material, it has the potential to be applied to the product as an excellent transparency (improvement of whiteness), UV protection efficacy and smooth texture.

        Three-Dimensional Analysis of Chloroplast Structures Associated with Virus Infection

        <P>Three-dimensional visualization identifies structural remodeling in chloroplasts during barley stripe mosaic virus infection.</P><P>Chloroplasts are multifunctional organelles whose morphology is affected by environmental stresses. Although the three-dimensional (3D) architecture of thylakoid membranes has been reported previously, a 3D visualization of chloroplast under stress has not been explored. In this work, we used a positive-strand RNA ((+)RNA) virus, barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) to observe chloroplast structural changes during infection by electron tomography. The analyses revealed remodeling of the chloroplast membranes, characterized by the clustering of outer membrane-invaginated spherules in inner membrane-derived packets. Diverse morphologies of cytoplasmic invaginations (CIs) were evident with spherules at the periphery and different sized openings connecting the CIs to the cytoplasm. Immunoelectron microscopy of these viral components verified that the aberrant membrane structures were sites for BSMV replication. The BSMV αa replication protein localized at the surface of the chloroplasts and played a prominent role in eliciting chloroplast membrane rearrangements. In sum, our results have revealed the 3D structure of the chloroplasts induced by BSMV infection. These findings contribute to our understanding of chloroplast morphological changes under stress conditions and during assembly of plant (+)RNA virus replication complexes.</P>
