In-situ fabrication of TiC-Fe<sub>3</sub>Al cermet

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Titanium carbide has high hardness, resistance to oxidation and abrasion while iron aluminide has proper ductility as well as good strength and excellent oxidation resistance up to high temperatures. Therefore, it can be expected TiC-iron aluminide cermet to have excellent mechanical properties as a cutting tool and a wear-resistance material. In this study, mechanical milling and hot press sintering processes were used to manufacture in-situ TiC-Fe<SUB>3</SUB>Al cermet, whose microstructure and mechanical properties were examined according to the changes in volume fraction of TiC and milling time. After 48h of milling each mechanically alloyed powder crystallized in a TiC and Fe<SUB>3</SUB>Al biphasic material. The milled powder was hot-pressed at 1250℃ and 50MPa for 30min to obtain sintered bodies also consisting of only TiC and Fe<SUB>3</SUB>Al phases. The hard phase, TiC, had a size of 100–300nm with overall uniform distribution decreasing as the volume fraction of TiC increased. The hardness of each sintered body showed a linearly increasing tendency according to the increase in TiC content, the hardness for 90vol% TiC cermet being as high as 1813Hv. On the other hand, the bending strength was 1800MPa and 1780MPa when TiC volume fraction was 50% and 70%, respectively, while it showed an abrupt decrease up to 580MPa at 90% TiC volume fraction. Fe<SUB>3</SUB>Al phase is effective to toughening of TiC-Fe<SUB>3</SUB>Al cermet and the volume fraction of Fe<SUB>3</SUB>Al phase significantly influences the bending strength of the cermet.</P>

A pulse tube refrigerator is a small scale cryocooler which was invented by Gifford and Longsworth in 1963. It has the advantages of high reliability and low vibration because it has no moving part in the cold part. In recent years, the pulse tube cryocooler have cooling capacities and thermal efficiencies comparable with the Stirling cryocooler. These advantages promote the widespread use of the pulse tube cryocooler in many fields, specially in space-borne application that require a long life and stable temperature. An in-line pulse tube cryocooler has been designed and tested in our laboratory. The main part of the cryocooler, consisting of an in-line assembly of aftercooler, regenerator, cold heat exchanger, inertance tube, buffer and hot heat exchanger. Generally, a long tube with small diameter is used as an inertance tube and it imposes resistance and impedance to gas flow simultaneously. Phase between pressure and flow at cold-end is adjusted by length of the inertance tube with fixed diameter. This paper presents the results of a series of performance tests for the in-line type pulse tube cryocooler. Experimental investigations have been conducted to evaluate their performance characteristics with respect to several parameters such as the phase shifter, operating pressure and operating frequency of the linear compressor.

Stirling type pulse tube cryocoolers are very attractive for cooling of diverse applications because it has several inherent advantages such as no moving part in the cold end, low manufacturing cost and long operation life. In recent years, the pulse tube cryocooler have cooling capacities and thermal efficiencies comparable with the Stirling cryocooler. These advantages promote the widespread use of the pulse tube cryocooler in many fields, specially in space-borne application that require a long life and stable temperature. Pulse tube cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensors is currently under development at KIMM. Our coolers are specifically designed to work in the thermal imaging device and to meet requirements such as cooling capacity, COP and high reliability. This paper presents the results of a series of performance tests for the in-line type pulse tube cryocooler. Experimental investigations have been conducted to evaluate their performance characteristics with respect to several parameters such as the phase shifter, operating pressure and operating frequency of the linear compressor.

The hydrogen production was investigated by using the cattle manure with and without pretreatment as the substrate. Heat treatment (50, 80, 120℃), initial pH control and acidic hydrolysis was used pretreatment. Without pretreatment, the hydrogen production was limited. By the Pretreatment with 0.5% HCI at 121℃. 20 min, about 45-55% of solid carbohydrates were hydrolyzed. In the batch test using hydrolyzed liquid, hydrogen production was 1.76 L/L and the degradation efficiency of carbohydrate was above 90%. In the continuous experiment, hydrogen was produced continuously. Hydrogen production rate was 3 L/L/day during the steady condition. The main organic acids were acetic acid and butyric acid.

This study was performed to investigated the removal efficiency of BOD and SS from the retreated water of sewage effluent by upflow filtration system. Flow rate of sewage effluent were 80m/day. 150m/day. 200m/day and 300m/day. The removal rate of SS was above 90%. and independent on the flow rate. However. BOD removal rate decreased with the flow rate increase. And removal rate of BOD was 40-60%. In the results of experiment, it was considered that the treated water was possible to use as the graywater because it was suitable to Flush Toilet, Springkle -Water. Cleaning Car. etc.

In this experiment, a study on the development of manufacture of FGM, we tried to magnify the size of FGM on the basis of spray stacking method, sintering method and powder stacking method.

An investigation on the production of high purity Sb₂O₃was carried out by means of the acid leaching process from the roasted ore of stibnite. The approach of these studies has been to investigate purity, particle size, recovery and crystal structure of Sb₂O₃obtained through the subsequent treatments of leaching, hydrolysis and neutralization under various conditions. The results obtained in these experiments are summarized as follows; 1) It was possible to use dilute hydrochloric acid to extract Sb₂O₃from the roasted stibnite. Because of the prior roasting treatment, the contamination of impurities could also be reduced in the final products. 2) The rate of extraction of Sb₂O₃from the roasted stibnite was increased concentration of hydro-chloric acid as increased amount of addition of the acid. 3) The yield of Sb₂O₃obtained by hydrolysis of SbCl₃was increased with increasing temperature of hydrolysis. 4) The crystal structure of Sb₂O₃obtained by hydrolysis of SbCl₃at 20℃(room temperature) was confirmed as a orthorhombic crystal structure which is the same as that of valentinite. The recovery of Sb₂O₃from the roasted ore appeared to be nearly 100% under optimum conditions.
