A closed cycle of sustainable development: Effective removal and desorption of lead and dyes using an oxidized cellulose membrane

        Nataša Knezevic,Jovana Milanovic,Zlate Velickovic,Milena Miloševic,Marija M. Vuksanovic,Antonije Onjia,Aleksandar Marinkovic 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.126 No.-

Oxidized cotton linters, TOCell, were used as an adsorbent or derived membrane there from by linterscross-linking with citric acid. The adsorption/desorption study of Pb2+, methylene blue (MB), and crystalviolet (CV) removal, was performed. Adsorption data fitting, obtained using the Langmuir model, gave116 mg g1 (Pb2+), 179 mg g1 (MB) and 482 mg g1 (CV) at 25 ℃ for TOCell linters, while 101 mg g1(Pb2+), 165 mg g1 (MB) and 426 mg g1 (CV) for TOCell membrane. After desorption dyes were subjectedto photocatalytic degradation while lead was transformed into stable lead phthalate (LP), and furtherused as filler in composites based on unsaturated polyester resins (UPR). UPR was synthesized fromwaste polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Structural characterization was performed using FTIR, SEM,and NMR methods. Composites loaded with acryloyl modified kraft lignin (A-KfL) and/or LP was testedfor tensile strength, Vickers microhardness, and fire resistance (UL-94 V method). The best mechanicaland fireproofing properties were obtained at 15 wt.% A-KfL and 40 wt.% Al(OH)3 addition. The resultsof the toxicity leaching test (TCLP) confirmed the environmentally safe stabilization of desorbed pollutantin the UPR matrix. Application of environmentally friendly membranes, susceptible to easy biodegradation, had low negative effects to the environment.

The role of percutaneous neurolysis in lumbar disc herniation: systematic review and meta-analysis

( Laxmaiah Manchikanti ),( Emilija Knezevic ),( Nebojsa Nick Knezevic ),( Mahendra R. Sanapati ),( Alan D. Kaye ),( Srinivasa Thota ),( Joshua A. Hirsch ) 대한통증학회 2021 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.34 No.3

Background: Recalcitrant disc herniation may result in chronic lumbar radiculopathy or sciatica. Fluoroscopically directed epidural injections and other conservative modalities may provide inadequate improvement in some patients. In these cases, percutaneous neurolysis with targeted delivery of medications is often the next step in pain management. Methods: An evidence-based system of methodologic assessment, namely, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was used. Multiple databases were searched from 1966 to January 2021. Principles of the best evidence synthesis were incorporated into qualitative evidence synthesis. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of patients with significant pain relief and functional improvement (≥ 50%). Duration of relief was categorized as short-term (< 6 months) and long-term (≥ 6 months). Results: This assessment identified one high-quality randomized controlled trial (RCT) and 5 moderate-quality non-randomized studies with an application of percutaneous neurolysis in disc herniation. Overall, the results were positive, with level II evidence. Conclusions: Based on the present systematic review, with one RCT and 5 nonrandomized studies, the evidence level is II for percutaneous neurolysis in managing lumbar disc herniation.

Intake, Digestibility In vivo, N Utilization and In sacco Dry Matter Degradability of Grass Silage Harvested at Three Stages of Maturity

        Vranic, Marina,Knezevic, Mladen,Perculija, Goran,Bosnjak, Kresimir,Leto, Josip Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.2

The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of grass maturity at harvest on the nutritive value of grass silage (GS) in relation to voluntary intake, digestibility, nitrogen (N) utilization and in sacco dry matter (DM) degradability. Silage was cut from a sward dominated by orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) at the late-vegetative (early-cut), internode elongation (mediumcut) and flowering (late-cut) stages of growth. The DM yield at harvest was the lowest for early-cut silage (5.4 t/ha) and increased to 6.5 and 7.0 t/ha for the medium and late-cut silage respectively. As the crop matured, the crude protein (CP) concentration decreased significantly (p<0.05) and there was a marked increase in acid detergent fiber (ADF) concentration (p<0.001). The three different silages were offered to four 18-month old Charolais wether sheep to measure the voluntary intake, in vivo digestibility and N retention over four 21-day periods in an incomplete changeover design. Silage degradability characteristics were determined using four fistulated sheep to measure DM degradability over 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. There was a linear decrease in the voluntary intake of silage fresh matter, DM, organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), digestibility of DM, OM, NDF, ADF and CP, and digestibility of OM in DM (Dvalue) ($P_L<0.01$) as harvesting of grass was delayed. Nitrogen intake, N output in urine, N output in faeces and N balance also linearly decreased ($P_L<0.01$) with postponed harvesting of grass for silage. DM degradability and effective degradability (ED) significantly decreased with increasing maturity of grass at harvest. The results suggest that harvesting date has a significant influence on the nutritive value of GS in terms of intake, digestibility, N balance and in sacco degradability in the rumen. It was concluded that early harvest GS ensured higher intake, digestibility, N intake and DM degradability in comparison with the medium and the late cut GS as a result of improved rumen N efficiency and utilization probably due to a better balance of available energy and protein.

Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer Presenting an Unusual Metastatic Pattern in the Form of Peritoneal and Rectal Metastases: A Case Report

        Djordjije Saranovic,Jelena Djokic Kovac,Srbislav Knezevic,Snezana Susnjar,Aleksandra Djuric Stefanovic,Dragana Sobic Saranovic,Vera Artiko,Vladimir Obradovic,Dragan Masulovic,Marjan Micev,Predrag Pesk 한국유방암학회 2011 Journal of breast cancer Vol.14 No.3

Gastrointestinal metastases from invasive lobular breast cancer are uncommon with the stomach and small intestines being the most common metastatic sites. Peritoneal and rectal metastases are very rare and only rarely occur as the first manifestation of disease. We herein report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with abdominal carcinomatosis as a first sign of invasive lobular breast carcinoma (ILC). Identifying the most important immunohistochemical markers for ILC: gross cystic disease fluid protein 15, estrogen and progesterone receptors enabled a correct diagnosis. After a six year disease-free period, relapse occurred with severe obstruction due to rectal metastasis from lobular breast carcinoma. Since there was no widespread metastatic disease, surgery with concomitant hormonal therapy was performed.

Adsorption of lipase from Candida rugosa on multi walled carbon nanotubes

        Nevena Z. Prlainovic,Dejan I. Bezbradica,Zorica D. Knezevic-Jugovic,Sanja I. Stevanovic,Milka L. Avramov Ivic,Petar S. Uskokovic,Dusan Z. Mijin 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.1

In this work lipase from Candida rugosa was adsorbed on unmodified surface of multi walled carbon nanotubes (raw-MWCNT). The effects of immobilization time, initial enzyme concentration and buffer ionic strength on enzyme loading and activity of immobilized preparations were tested. High loadings are attained. The immobilized enzyme obtained at lowest initial enzyme concentration and high ionic strength retained 85% of initial enzyme activity. It is assumed that immobilization on hydrophobic surface led to conformational changes that resulted in the adsorption of lipase in active conformation. Immobilized preparations were characterized, with FT-IR spectroscopy, AFM, and cyclic voltammetry.

( Dejan Zivanovic ),( Jovan Javorac ),( Jelena Blanusa ),( Svetlana Stojkov ),( Jasmina Knezevic ),( Ivan Kopitovic ),( Miroslav Ilic ) 대한결핵 및 호흡기학회 2021 대한결핵 및 호흡기학회 추계학술대회 초록집 Vol.129 No.-

Background The COVID-19 pandemic put enormous pressure on healthcare systems and health workers around the world. With this study, we aimed to investigate the presence of burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic among healthcare professionals treating patients with respiratory diseases. Methods This research was conducted during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Republic of Serbia, from April 23rd to May 8th 2020, among healthcare professionals from several facilities that treat pulmonary patients. The respondents were asked to complete a web-based questionnaire that included Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ). Basic socio-demographic parameters were collected as well. Results This study included 44 respondents. Among them, 26 (59%) were physicians, while 18 (41%) were nurses. Females were predominantly represented in our sample (70.5%). The mean age of respondents was 40.2, ranging from 21 to 64 years. The average lenght of service in the healthcare system was 14.7 years. Only 8 of our respondents (18.2%) have not dealt with COVID-19 patients in their clinical work, while 22 (50%) were treating COVID-19 patients on a daily basis. The mean score of our respondents achieved on CBI was 51.08 (SD, 24.12). A low level of burnout experienced 20 (45.5%) of healthcare professionals, moderate 15 (34%), while a high level of burnout was presented in 9 (20.5%) of respondents. The mean value of the distress scale from 4DSQ was 21.02 (SD, 9.6), with 18 of respondents (41%) experiencing a low level of distress, 16 (36.4%) moderate, while 10 (22.6%) manifested a high level of distress. These Results are presented in Table 1. Conclusion Working during the pandemic exposed healthcare professionals from pulmonary institutions not only to the increased work load, but also to many emotional challenges, leading to higher levels of professional burnout and distress, as showed in our study.

The Protective Effects of Probiotic Bacteria on Cadmium Toxicity in Rats

        Sinisa Djurasevic,Adel Jama,Nebojsa Jasnic,Predrag Vujovic,Milos Jovanovic,Dragana Mitic-Culafic,Jelena Knezevic-Vukcevic,Maja Cakic-Milosevic,Konstantin Ilijevic,Jelena Djordjevic 한국식품영양과학회 2017 Journal of medicinal food Vol.20 No.2

One of the useful properties of probiotic bacteria is their capacity to bind different targets, thus eliminating them through feces. It is supposed that one of these targets could be cadmium, a widespread environmental toxicant that causes various disturbances in biological systems. This study examined the protective effects of probiotic supplementation against cadmium-induced toxicity in the rat. The experiment was conducted in the course of 5 weeks. Animals were divided into four groups: (1) controls, (2) probiotics treated, (3) cadmium treated, and (4) probiotics + cadmium treated. The cadmium concentration was measured in the blood, liver, kidney, and feces, as well as the blood alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) as biomarkers of the liver function. Histomorphological changes in the liver and kidney were also determined. Our results revealed that probiotics combined with cadmium increase this metal concentration in feces. As a result, blood, liver, and kidney Cd levels, as well as blood ALT and AST activities were lessened compared to the rat group treated with cadmium only. Besides, probiotics consumed simultaneously with cadmium attenuated histomorphological changes in the liver and kidney caused by cadmium. The rise in lactobacilli number in feces of rats treated simultaneously with cadmium and probiotics results in strong correlation with the increase of Cd concentration in their feces and the decrease of Cd concentration in their blood. We speculate that probiotics actively contribute to cadmium excretion through feces, probably, by its binding to their bacterial cell wall.
