        Clinical Usefulness of Korean Red Ginseng in Postmenopausal Women with Severe Climacteric Disturbance

        The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical usefulness of Korean red ginseng (RG) on various postmenopausal syndromes. Total plasminogen inhibitor-1 (tPAI-1) in peripheral blood from 9 postmenopausal women with climacteric syndromes (CS) was measured before and 3 months after treatment with daily oral administrat i on of 6g RG and that from 8 postmenopausal women without any CS was also measured as healthy controls. Blood samples were collected in the early morning on the bed-rest. Psychological conditions of postmenopausal women with CS were measured before and 3 months after treatment with RG using simplified menopausal index (SMI). In addition, OKETSU (blood stagnation) syndrome scores and KI deficiency (generalized energy stagnation) scores proposed by Terasawa et al., were recorded before and 3months after treatment with RG in postmenopausal women with CS and in healthy postmenopausal women. OKETSU syndrome scores and tPAI-1 levels in postmenopausal patients with CS were significantly (P<0.001 and<br/> P<0.01) higher than those in healthy postmenopausal women without CS. Similarly, SMI scores and KI deficiency scores in postmenopausal patients with CS were about three-fold higher than those without any CS. When RG was administered for 3 months, KI deficiency scores and OKETSU scores as well as SMI scores declined around the levels of healthy postmenopausal women. Although tPAI-1 levels significantly (P<0.05) decreased after treatment with RG, those did not reach the levels of healthy postmenopausal women. Clinical usefulness of administration of RG to postmenopausal women with CS was confirmed from evaluation not only by modern medicine but also by traditional KAMPO medicine.

        Goniotrichopsis reniformis (Kajimura) Kikuchi comb. nov. (Stylonematales, Rhodophyta) from Japan

        The morphology and life history of Stylonema reniforme Kajimura (Stylonematales, Rhodophyta) from Japan were investigated and its taxonomic placement was discussed. This species has 6-30 discoid chloroplasts devoid of a pyrenoid in each cell. This is a typical feature of the genus Goniotrichopsis. The species reproduced only by monospores, which were formed by the direct transformation of the vegetative cells similar to the type species Goniotrichopsis sublittoralis Smith. Goniotrichopsis reniformis (Kajimura) Kikuchi comb. nov. was proposed. The asexual life history of the present species was completed in 3-10 weeks at 15-20°C in culture.

        <P>Chloroplast protein import is mediated by two hetero-oligomeric protein complexes, the Tic and Toc translocons, which are located in the inner and outer envelope membranes. At the inner membrane, many Tic components have been identified and characterized, but it remains unclear how these Tic proteins are organized to form a protein-conducting channel or whether a stable Tic core complex that binds translocating preproteins exists. Here, we report the identification of a 1-megadalton (MD) translocation complex as an intermediate during protein translocation across the inner membrane in Arabidopsis thaliana and pea (Pisum sativum). This complex can be detected by blue native PAGE using the mild detergent digitonin without any chemical cross-linkers. The preprotein arrested in the 1-MD complex can be chased into its fully translocated form after a subsequent incubation. While Tic20 and Tic21 appear to be involved in the 1-MD complex, Tic110, a well-characterized Tic component, exists as a distinct entity from the complex. Several lines of evidence suggest that the 1-MD complex functions in between the Toc and Tic110-containing complexes, most likely as a protein-conducting channel at the inner envelope.</P>

      • Measurement of the Permeability in a Ferrite Core by Superimposing Bias Current

        In this study, we investigate measurement of the magnetic permeability in a ferrite core at RF frequencies when bias current is superimposed on an RF signal with a view to adaptively controlling performance of RF transformers using ferrite cores. A measurement arrangement used comprises a short microstrip line (MSL) circuit including a coaxial conductor (CC) structure consisting of an electrically grounded metal pipe, a center conductor and a sample between them. A bias tee network is incorporated into this MSL-CC circuit in order to superimpose direct current on an RF signal. Using this arrangement, a dependence of permeability on an amplitude of superimposed bias current was measured at frequencies of 10 MHz to 500 MHz. Reliability of the measurement results is discussed based on several experimental data, implying that the method has an accuracy less than 10 % at most of the above frequencies.

        Morphology and Life History of Stylonema cornu-cervi Reinsch (Goniotrichales, Rhodophyta) from Japan

        The morhology and life history of Stylonema cornu-cervi Reinsch from Japan were investigated. The species had multiseriate erect thalli from a basal cell. The thalli usually branched dichotomously, occasionally trichotomously near the base, and non-branched thalli were sometimes observed. A dichotomous branch on the upper portion near the base occurred only one time on each erect branch. Cells contained a stellate chloroplast, which was composed of a central rounded part with an obscure pyrenoid and 5-8 cup-like lobes connected to the central part by a small thin stipe. The biseriate part was observed on the six-celled stage in culture, and the grown thalli were multiseriate except for base and apices. Monospores forming from the immediate transformation of vegetative cells were observed. Thalli grew at 15-25$^{\circ}C$ and died at 10 and 30$^{\circ}C$. The fastest growth and maturation were observed under 25$^{\circ}C$ and 14L:10D. Although S. alsidii (Zanardini) Drew usually had uniseriate thalli, irregularly branched multiseriate thalli had been reported in cultures. It is possible that in the previous report the thalli were confused with S. cornu-cervi. In this report, S. cornu-cervi were distinguished from S. alsidii in that the branches were few, the multiseriate portions were observed on the early stage (six-celled stage), and the grown thalli were multiseriate except at the base and apices.

        Carbon Stable Isotope Ratios of Phytoplankton and Benthic Diatoms in Lake Katanuma with Reference to Those of Other Lakes

        Carbon stable isotope ratios of producers varied in lake ecosystems. In tile present study, we tried to estimate the seasonal variations of carbon isotope ratios of phytoplankton and benthic diatoms in a strongly acidic lake ecosystem. Lake Katanuma is a volcanic, strongly acidic lake (average pH of 2.2), located in Miyagi, Japan. Only two algal species dominate in Lake Katanuma; Pinnularia acidojaponica as a benthic diatom, and Chlamydomonas acidophila as a green alga. Carbon isotope values of P. acidojaponica varied seasonally, while those of particulate organic matter, which were mainly composed of C. acidophila remained fairly stable. The differences suggested that $CO_2$ gas was more frequently limited for P. acidojaponica than C. acidophila, since high density patches of benthic diatoms were sometimes observed on the lake sediment. Generally, carbon concentration mechanisms (CCMs)of microalgae can fix bicarbonate in lakes, and affect the carbon isotope values of microalgae. While, in Lake Katanuma, CCMs of the microalgae may scarcely function because of high $CO_2$ gas concentration and low pH. This is the reason for low seasonal amplitude of carbon isotope values of phytoplankton relative to those in other lakes.

        Diminished reality using semantic segmentation and generative adversarial network for landscape assessment: evaluation of image inpainting according to colour vision

        The objective of this research is to develop a method to detect and virtually remove representations of existing buildings from a video stream in real-time for the purpose of visualizing a future scenario without these buildings. This is done by using semantic segmentation, which eliminates the need to create three-dimensional models of the buildings and the surrounding scenery, and a generative adversarial network (GAN), a deep learning method for generating images. Real-time communication between devices enables users to utilize only portable devices equipped with a camera to visualize the future landscape onsite. As verification of the proposed method’s usefulness, we evaluated the complementation accuracy of the GAN and real-time performance of the entire method. The results indicated that the process is completed accurately when the area to be complemented is less than 15% of the view and that the process runs at 5.71 fps. The proposed method enables users to understand intuitively the future landscape and contributes to reducing the time and cost for building consensus.

        Recent trends of healthcare information and communication technologies in pediatrics: a systematic review

        As information communication technology (ICT) has advanced, the healthcare industry has embraced it to reduce medical costs, improve health outcomes, and increase patient satisfaction. Healthcare ICT revolutionizes pediatric healthcare. This study aimed to categorize and synthesize findings from the literature regarding the application of ICT in pediatric patients. This systematic review is based on a comprehensive search of Embase, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar. Study selection and coding were performed independently by 2 researchers, followed by narrative categorization. To reflect current trends in ICT for pediatrics, we adopted the Hype cycle technology classification developed by the advisory and information technology firm, Gartner, and the classification of digital health interventions by the World Health Organization. This study included a total of 135 studies. The analysis revealed 7 main types of ICT for pediatrics: (1) telehealth (39 papers), (2) precision medicine (2 papers), (3) automated decision support systems (17 papers), (4) electronic health records (7 papers), (5) patient portals (7 papers), (6) artificial intelligence (AI) (39 papers), and (7) mobile and wearable technologies (20 papers). In particular, we consistently found references to ICT for pediatrics as well as changing and improving healthcare for children. Further studies are required to determine how we can improve ICT productivity for pediatrics, particularly through AI. This study’s results will help healthcare delivery organizations and technology companies consider the future direction of pediatric healthcare.

      • Self-Assessment and Working time on Nut Size Distinction Skill of Marine Engineers

        A rule of thumb for marine engineers is that if a marine engineer has much experience in maintaining machines, the marine engineer can distinguish the size of the tool (spanner or wrench) required for removing machine nuts or bolts by mere observation [1]. This study investigates whether this rule of thumb is related to self-assessment and working time for the distinction of nuts. The participants in this experiment were marine engineering students without practical experience. The experiment included visual and hand conditions. The experiment place was not only a ship engine room but a training room where noise, high temperature, and the smell of fuel oil in the marine engine plant were not experienced by the students. The results showed that the number of the nuts accurately distinguished was unaffected by working hours and self-assessment of the participants who had a boarding history of 12 months on the training ship. Safe operation on marine engine plants must rely on the skills of marine engineers, such as a nut size distinction skill.
