Mining for Traditional Knowledge: An Analysis of the Process and Origins of Bio-prospecting and its Effects on Aboriginal Communities

        Keegan Robertson 연세대학교(미래캠퍼스) 빈곤문제국제개발연구원 2014 地域發展硏究 Vol.23 No.1

Aboriginal peoples around the world have made invaluable contributions toadvances in medical fields and sustainable resource management practicesthrough the use of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous naturalresources, yet few benefits have been restored to the source communities. Usingeconomic and development concepts from Marx, Gunder Frank, and Ferguson Ihave deconstructed a process of international patent laws, benefit sharingagreements, and national resource ownership laws which have workedconsistently to usurp ownership of resources and knowledge from Aboriginalcommunities, and to deny their development. The result is further marginalizationand the aversion of Aboriginal communities to sharing their resources. Throughthe analysis of several case studies in Canada, South Africa, Tonga, Samoa andLesotho I conclude that resource ownership and management practices need tobe decentralized and indigeneity self-determined. I also suggest that the widerpolicy changes necessary to rectify the disenfranchisement of Aboriginal peoplesmay not be possible within the current world system of neoliberal capitalism, ascentralization of capital is implicit in its design.

Development and Psychometric Validation of a Semantic Differential Measure of Character Strengths in a Sample of Singaporean University Students

        Chin-Chin Chou,John Keegan,Nicole Ditchman,Fong Chan,Kanako Iwanaga,Cahit Kaya,Kevin Bengtson,Mayu Fujikawa,Soo-Yin Tan 한국상담학회 2021 Journal of Asia Pacific counseling Vol.11 No.1

Positive psychology emerged as a movement in professional psychology that emphasizes the positive psychological aspects of the individual instead of focusing on diagnosis and psychopathology. Peterson and Seligman (2004) developed and validated the 240-item Virtues in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) to assess character strengths and virtues that enable optimal human thriving. However, VIA-IS is often considered too long for use by clinicians in their private practices, as well as for researchers interested in conducting positive psychology research. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of a 24-item Values in Action Semantic Differential Scale (VIA-SDS) in a sample of 231 Singaporean university students. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a 4-factor measurement structure (Humanity, Optimism, Leadership, and Creativity) with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranging from .67 to .88. Three of the four latent variables were positively associated with happiness and negatively related to perceived stress and depression. These findings support the validity of the VIA-SDS for use as a brief clinical assessment instrument by clinicians and researchers to assess character strengths.

Dietary supplementation of finishing pigs with the docosahexaenoic acid-rich microalgae, Aurantiochytrium limacinum: effects on performance, carcass characteristics and tissue fatty acid profile

Moran, Colm A.,Morlacchini, Mauro,Keegan, Jason D.,Fusconi, Giorgio Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.5

Objective: The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich microalgae, Aurantiochytrium limacinum (AURA) on pig performance, carcass traits, and the fatty acid composition of pork Longissimus lumborum (LL) and backfat. Methods: A total of 144 Pig Improvement Company (PIC)${\times}$Goland finishing pigs (72 females and 72 castrated males) of mean weight 117.1 (${\pm}13.1$) kg were blocked by sex and body weight and provided with 0% or 1% AURA in isonutritive and isocaloric diets. A total of 24 pens provided 12 replicates per treatment. Animals were weighed on day 0 and 28 with feed and water intake recorded per pen. After 31 days supplementation (28 days of study and 3 days until the slaughtering date) three animals per pen (n = 72) were slaughtered and the LL and backfat thickness, lean meat content and dressing percentage were recorded for the carcasses. The fatty acid (FA) profile of the LL and backfat was established by direct FA methyl ester synthesis. Results: No differences were observed for any performance parameters or carcass traits. Supplementation with AURA resulted in significant changes to the FA profiles of both the LL and backfat with male and female pigs responding differently to supplementation in terms of particular FAs. Overall, pork LL samples had significantly higher eicosapentaenoic acid (p<0.001) and DHA concentrations (p<0.001), and higher omega-3 (n-3) FAs (p<0.001), as well as an increased omega3:omega6 (n-3:n-6) ratio (p = 0.001). For backfat, supplementation resulted in significantly higher amounts of DHA (p<0.001) and n-3 FAs (p<0.001). Conclusion: These results indicate that dietary supplementation with 1% AURA over a 31 day period can increase the FA composition of pork LL and backfat, specifically the DHA, with no major impact on growth performance and carcass traits.
