A poly(methyl red) film-modified glassy carbon electrode (PMRE) was fabricated for determination of norfloxacin (NFX). The electrochemical behavior of NFX was investigated and a well-defined oxidation peak with high sensitivity was observed at the film electrode. PMRE greatly enhanced the oxidation peak current of NFX owing to the extraordinary properties of poly(methyl red) film. Based on this, a sensitive and simple voltammetric method was developed for measurement of NFX. A sensitive linear voltammetric response for NFX was obtained in the concentration range of $1\;{\times}\;10^{-6}\;-\;1\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$ mol/L and the detection limit was $1\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$ mol/L using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The proposed method possessed advantages such as low detection limit, fast response, low cost and simplicity. The practical application of this new analytical method was demonstrated with NFX pharmaceuticals.

Background: Periodontal disease is a major cause of tooth loss in adults and is a representative oral disease commonly suffered by most people around the world. Mainly the proliferation of Gram-negative bacteria and secreted virulence factors cause an inflammatory response and destroy periodontal tissue. Gossypetin, isolated from Hibiscus sabdariffa L, is known to have various pharmacological effects, including antibacterial and anticancer activities. We aimed to confirm the anti-inflammatory effect of gossypetin through interleukin-6 (IL-6) regulation in human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a major cause of adult periodontitis. Methods: CCK-8 assay was performed to confirm the concentration-dependent cytotoxicity of gossypetin against HGFs. The secretion level and mRNA expression of IL-6, an inflammation-related cytokine, and the effect of gossypetin on these in HGFs stimulated with P. gingivalis LPS were confirmed by ELISA and qRT-PCR analysis, respectively. Results: Up to a concentration of 100 μM gossypetin with or without P. gingivalis LPS, the survival rate for HGFs was maintained at over 95% and showed no toxicity. ELISA and qRT-PCR analysis results showed that P. gingivalis LPS increased IL-6 secretion and mRNA levels in HGFs compared to the control group. However, this increase in IL-6 was significantly down-regulated by gossypetin treatment in a dose-dependent manner. In particular, 80 μM gossypetin inhibited IL-6 production to the level of the control group. Conclusion: These results indicated that gossypetin attenuated IL-6 production in HGFs stimulated by P. gingivalis LPS, which may ultimately suppress the inflammatory response in periodontal tissue. Therefore, gossypetin may have potential as a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease.

Consensus-Based Peer-to-Peer Control Architecture for Multiuser Haptic Interaction Over the Internet
Ke Huang,Dongjun Lee IEEE 2013 IEEE transactions on robotics Vol.29 No.2

We propose a novel peer-to-peer (P2P) distributed control architecture for the shared haptic interaction among remotely located users over partially connected and undirected unreliable Internet communication network with varying delay, packet loss, data swapping/duplication, etc. Each user simulates and interacts with their own local copy of the shared deformable virtual object (for haptic responsiveness against latency), while these local copies are synchronized via a proportional-derivative type consensus control over the Internet communication network (for haptic experience consistency among the users). Our proposed architecture enforces passivity, thereby, rendering itself to be interaction stable, portable, and scalable for heterogeneous (passive) users and devices. Configuration consensus among the local copies and force balance among the users are also shown. The issue of optimizing communication network topology is also addressed with some relevant experimental results.

A coelomycete with characters resembling the asexual morphs in the family Botryosphaeriaceae was isolated from a fallen leaf of an orchid collected in Thailand. Morphological and phylogenetic analyses placed the strain in Neoscytalidium. Phylogenetic relationships among Neoscytalidium species were inferred by analyzing internal transcribed spacers and large subunit of rRNA sequence data and indicate that our strain is a new species, which is introduced and illustrated herein as Neoscytalidium orchidacearum sp. nov.

The phytophagous mite is highly polyphagous and widespread in warmer regions and greenhouses around the world, and so the focus of novel acaricides is shifting towards more effective, ecofriendly new chemical entity with unique modes of action. In this study, eighteen spirobutyrolactones derived from natural tetronic acid have been synthesized and their acaricidal activities against Tetranychus cinnabarinus were investigated by slide-dip method. The results of preliminary bioassay indicate that some of these compounds exhibited promising acaricidal activities, especially, compounds 6 and 18 show significant activities against T. cinnabarinus than the commercial spirodiclofen 1 (27.37% mortality), and which present 58.55% and 82.24% mortality at tested dose, respectively. The relationship between structure and acaricidal activity was also discussed based on the experimental data, and which indicate that the compounds (16, 17 and 18) with non-substituted phenyl ring (R1=H) show obviously better activities. Especially, we also can find that substituted benzoyl unit will help to increase the activity than substituted phenylacetyl group.

Purpose: As midwives witness and attend the whole process of childbirth, they have a better understanding of which factors may cause traumatic childbirth. However, because most of the studies paid their attention on mothers, little is known about psychological birth trauma from the perspective of midwives. This study aims to gain a full understanding of which factors may contribute to psychological traumatic childbirth from the perspective of midwives. Methods: A qualitative research was conducted using in-depth interviews, which involved fourteen midwives from the maternal ward of a tertiary hospital. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, and then, Colaizzi's method was used to analyze the contents of the interviews. Results: We proposed four themes and eight subthemes on the influencing factors of psychological traumatic childbirth from the perspective of midwives: low perceived social support (lack of support from family and lack of support from medical staff), hard times (protracted labor in the first stage and futile efforts during the second stage), poor birth outcomes (poor birth outcomes of the mother and poor birth outcomes of the baby), and excruciating pain (unbearable pain of uterine contraction and labor pain was incongruent with the mother's expectations). Conclusion: Medical staff should pay attention to psychological traumatic childbirth and its effects, and emphasis on the screening and assessment of birthing women with negative feelings so that their psychological traumatic childbirth can be prevented and decreased.
